Chapter 1202: Chapter 75: The Oppression of Death
Shattered flesh rained down like a heavy rainfall, staining the surrounding ground with a mottled crimson, eye-piercing to the extreme. A severed thigh fell among the flowers, causing nearby ants to cheer and leap with joy, as this was a feast for them to gorge on.
"What the hell happened?" Jing Lan’s body kept shaking—she hadn’t adapted to the killing yet, as she held an SCAR Assault Rifle and stood there foolishly.
Zhao Dongtao, carrying an M240 General Purpose Machine Gun, jumped down and stood beside her, vigilantly scanning the area. The others on the bus all had grave expressions—the rest area wasn’t large, so the intense gunshots and loud calls all came over clearly.
"Brother Liu, please start the bus and make sure it’s ready to leave at any moment," Tang Zheng replaced the ammo clip on his rifle. He regretted letting the newbies take a break—zombies really were relentless. "Rong He, bring down a few AT-4s."
"Alright." Rong He was Tang Zheng’s classmate, a slightly short but very strong young man, his muscular body looking extremely violent. He was brave but not talkative.
Xiu Yingjie also slung a rifle over his shoulder, carrying an AT-4 as he came down. He wanted to show his goodwill to Tang Zheng, but he never got the chance, knowing that he had hurt him deeply.
"Here they come, from the left!" Tao Ran mounted his rifle on top of the muzzle, watching the surroundings. As he shouted, he pulled the trigger, the bullet whistling out, hitting the wall, and blowing small pits into it.
The miner burst out, moving on all fours like a wild dog in a zigzag run, instinctively dodging bullets. The newbies were startled and began shooting wildly.
Of the ten general-purpose machine guns, only six fired—the four others had forgotten to chamber a round—but the formidable firepower still suppressed the miner. Bullets struck, turning its body into a bloody mess, but the creature stubbornly refused to die, attempting to charge through the hail of gunfire.
On the other side, Ding Jian ran out, loudly calling for help, followed by Nie Jianhua, who was cursing him with a face full of resentment. This kind of shouting could very well attract zombies. If so, the first to suffer would definitely be the lagging Nie Jianhua.
If Nie Jianhua hadn’t already seen Tang Zheng, he would have liked to shoot Ding Jian.
The miner’s head magnified in the ACOG sight, and Tang Zheng pulled the trigger, chasing and shooting at it. It took three rounds to blow its head open. Sure enough, tentacle-like strips of flesh burst out from the neck, flailing wildly, still not giving up the attack.
"Take this!" Zhao Dongtao hefted the AT-4, firing a rocket shell at the miner’s body. It hit, immediately blowing it into a puddle of broken flesh.
The newbies’ breathing became labored as they watched the surroundings vigilantly, ready to shoot at any moment.
"What’s wrong?" Zhao Dongtao yelled.
"Hurry up and drive—it’s Li Wenbo. He’s turned into a powerful zombie and has killed many people," Ding Jian ran onto the bus, urging Liu Guohao to drive. "We can’t win this, whoever goes out there dies."
Panic instantly enveloped the inside of the bus.
"Shut up." Tang Zheng hated those who disrupted morale, "Everyone get on the bus, Brother Liu, drive. Let’s get out of here."
Tang Zheng planned to first circle around to the gas station where the Armored Humvee was parked to assess the situation and figure out what to do next.
"The newbies should also learn to be independent," Tang Zheng needed warriors who dared to fight, not cowards who only knew how to run.
"Got it!" Liu Guohao’s driving skills were decent; he had been following Tang Zheng all along, and after getting the key, he started getting familiar with the Greyhound bus’s driving methods.
Li Huixin hugged a general-purpose machine gun and two AT-4s, placing them beside her husband, quietly guarding him.
"Don’t worry, it’s okay." Liu Guohao comforted his wife with a reassuring smile.
"There’s a zombie—it’s Xiao Li!" Ding Jian shouted, alerting Tang Zheng. He dared not fight, but by doing this he could show his presence and make everyone feel he was somewhat useful.
The virus released by terrorists in Chicago was a low-level embryo of a parasitic virus. After infecting a host, ninety percent couldn’t manifest it and would become common zombies. Occasionally, some might mutate, though the probability was extremely low. However, after Li Wenbo was infected and transmitted it a second time, he was able to achieve a hundred percent expression of the characteristics.
The parasitic virus transmission was slow, but it was controllable, allowing hosts to retain a certain level of intelligence. This enabled them to use simple tools, and over time, even firearms became no problem.
What Anlanke Pharmaceuticals wanted to create were biological weapons that felt no pain, knew no fear, and never tired—creatures like Li Wenbo were close to the completed form they desired.
Xiao Li’s police uniform was wrinkled and clung to his body. He moved his limbs quickly like a giant lizard, chasing after the bus.
The newbies were unsettled, firing hastily again, shattering the rear car window and scattering glass slag everywhere.
The bus’s supply of ammunition was limited, and at this rate of firing, it would all be depleted in less than five minutes.
"Stop shooting, hold your fire," Tang Zheng picked up a general-purpose machine gun from the ground, chambered it, and took aim at Xiao Li for sustained single shots. With the casings ejecting and pinging off the car walls, he fired.
Bullets danced and struck Xiao Li nearly exclusively, tearing his body apart. Even as its left forearm was blasted away, Tang Zheng thought it might slow down. But the monster continued to crawl using its broken limb, still roaring ferociously without faltering.
"Tang Zheng, we have to get back to the gas station for ammunition," Zhao Dongtao didn’t care about the fate of Zhou Meng’s group, but they absolutely had to get the ammunition.
Nie Jianhua held the rifle and shot at Xiao Li, using this time to practice his marksmanship. It was a good time to relax a bit after emptying his ammo clip.
"Didn’t you hear me?" Tang Zheng had used about sixty bullets to turn Xiao Li into a pile of broken flesh. He then walked over to Nie Jianhua and slapped him across the face.
If Tang Zheng hadn’t held back, he could have knocked out Nie Jianhua’s false teeth. The old man didn’t dare to talk back and even forced a smile.
Ding Jian had also wanted to fire off a few more clips and ask others for more when needed, but now he didn’t dare.
As the bus turned the street corner, everyone saw Zhou Meng and his group fleeing in disarray like rabbits, chased by Sister Liu and Wang Ning. The long-haired girl was pinned down by Sister Liu.
"Sister Liu, it’s me." The girl cried out, pushing against the white-collar woman on top of her.
Sister Liu didn’t hear her voice at all. Her lips met the girl’s, and her leech-like tongue forced its way into the girl’s throat.
The girl’s cheeks bulged, trapped and drooling at the corners of her mouth as she struggled ceaselessly.
In less than three seconds, Sister Liu withdrew her saliva-coated tongue, chasing after her next prey. As the parasitic eggs entered the girl’s stomach, they quickly sprouted flesh buds, invading her body. In a few breaths, she turned into a zombie.
Wang Ning also caught his prey, it was his former classmate Zhang Cheng. To him, Zhang was now nothing more but a sumptuous dinner. He kissed Zhang, proceeding with the laying of eggs.
Tang Zheng hated Li Wenbo to death. Seeing Wang Ning who had turned into a zombie, he felt reluctant, but he knew he had to seize the moment. He picked up an AT-4 and shot at him.
The rocket shell hit Wang Ning, who had just finished laying eggs, and blew him into pieces of flesh that spread out in a fan shape on the roadway.
Zhang Cheng got up, eyes blood-red, and charged toward the bus.
"Brother, I’m sorry." Rong He held the machine gun and sprayed bullets at Zhang Cheng. The parasite had not yet had time to strengthen its host’s body, so the 7.62mm caliber bullets could still cause damage.
"No one other than Tang Zheng is allowed to use the AT-4," Zhao Dongtao shouted, preventing Xiu Yingjie from firing the rocket launcher. His lack of skill would be a pure waste.
Xiu Yingjie thought Zhao Dongtao was being nosy but didn’t dare to contradict him.
Just as Tang Zheng was about to shoot Zhang Cheng, a sports car suddenly burst out diagonally and slammed hard into the bus. Liu Guohao broke into a cold sweat, swiftly turning the steering wheel, barely avoiding the impact. Unfortunately, the assault wasn’t over yet. Li Wenbo made a quick stop with the sports car, took out an AT-4, and fired at the back of the bus.
"RPG!" Zhao Dongtao yelled, warning Liu Guohao. He saw the incoming missile in the rear-view mirror, and although he tried his best to dodge, the missile was too fast and still grazed the bus.
"Get down!" Tang Zheng grabbed Song Xin next to him, pressing her down. As soon as he finished speaking, boom, a fireball rose. The bus overturned and slid sideways, its walls scraping against the road surface, sparking and making an ear-piercing noise.
"RPG!" Xiu Yingjie saw Li Wenbo aiming an AT-4 at them again and nearly went insane with fear. One more hit and they would all turn to ash.
"Get off the bus, quick!" Tang Zheng yelled, grabbing an AT-4 as he got up, firing preemptively. Li Wenbo moved to avoid the rocket, causing his own shot to miss and explode five meters away from the bus, with the blast throwing up rocks that hit the bus walls with a crackling sound.
Li Wenbo’s sports car was hit by Tang Zheng’s rocket, turning into a fireball. The weapons and ammunition inside it exploded, and there was no more fear of being attacked from a distance.
Tang Zheng, holding Dong Zixuan with one hand and firing with the other, jumped off the bus.
"The zombies are coming!" As Ding Jian ran down, he immediately started shouting anxiously, Sister Liu went after Zhou Meng, but Zhang Cheng and the long-haired girl were heading their way instead.
"Don’t be scared, kill them," Zhao Dongtao roared. Rong He held the machine gun and fired, his strong arms keeping the muzzle steady.
Zhang Cheng was already shot to pieces.
"Li Wenbo, die!" Tang Zheng, gripping the rifle, fired at him. If he didn’t take out this guy, no one would escape. He knew without looking that this guy could create zombie puppets.
"You’re the one who’s going to die. What did you do to Zixuan?" Li Wenbo, upon seeing the policewoman passed out, thought Tang Zheng had taken advantage of her, and furiously charged at him, moving so fast the bullets could hardly hit him.
"Drive, quick!" Zhou Meng jumped onto the Hummer’s roof, telling Su Su to drive while he grabbed the vehicle-mounted machine gun and attacked Sister Liu.
Sister Liu ran in a zigzag pattern and pounced on an unlucky man. Without time to lay eggs, she formed her fingers into a knife, stabbing into the man’s chest and ripping his heart out.
