Chapter 1199: Chapter 72: Seed and Spawning

Uncle Wang’s body parts were scattered in front of the door, causing Kong Licheng and the others to spasm with horror. The mutated creature’s terrifying strike also completely shattered their resolve to resist. Even the bravest and most belligerent traffic police began to turn and flee. He didn’t want to be massacred without any value.

As the vaccine erosion intensified, the mutated creature’s body was once again strengthened, and its IQ began to decline, leaving only hunting instincts. It locked onto Kong Licheng and gave chase.

"Damn it!" Kong Licheng saw the disgusting monster chasing after him like a frenzied dog, his face turned pale, knowing that asking others for help was futile, he desperately fled, "Think, how can I get rid of it?"

Kong Licheng regulated his breathing, forcing himself to stay calm; he never even considered killing the mutated creature, as that was impossible. The only option left was to divert it away with cannon fodder.

The mutated creature caught up to him, and he could even smell the stench emanating from the monster’s body. The roaring sounded as if it exploded right next to his ear, making him break out in a cold sweat.

Kong Licheng changed direction and darted into a room a few meters away, tossing a hand grenade at the entrance as he went.

Boom! The mutated creature entering the door was hit directly by the explosion, but such force did no damage to it; it only delayed its steps slightly.

"Is anyone there!" Kong Licheng sprinted upstairs for his life, firing his rifle randomly into the rooms on the second floor, hoping to alert the newbies hiding in the house and create noises that would distract the mutated creature.

The mutated creature continued the chase, and upon seeing Kong Licheng dart into a bedroom and escape through a window, it stopped in its tracks, listened intently, and then pounced into the room next door.

Kong Licheng had succeeded. Bullets penetrated the wooden planks, flew into the room, and the whizzing sounds frightened a hiding girl into crying out, although not loudly. Still, for the mutated creature with its exceptional hearing, it was like a beacon in the darkness.

The girl was Tang Zheng’s classmate, huddled under the bed, desperately covering her mouth for fear of screaming. Her tears streaked down her cheeks as she prayed incessantly for the monster to leave quickly.

Thud, thud, the monster’s large feet hit the floor, kicking up dust that danced in the sunlight, like ugly little demons.

The girl dared not move, but her body couldn’t stop trembling, and her teeth chattered. She bit her fingers urgently, staring at those rotten large feet, almost losing her ability to think, hesitating between running and calling for help when a huge head suddenly lowered down. The large eyes swiveled, focusing on the girl.

The girl was scared stiff, reaching for the gun, ready to shoot, but she was a split second too slow. Whoosh, the mutated creature’s tongue shot out, wrapping around her neck, dragging her out from under the bed.

"Don’t come over!" The girl struggled in a frenzy, but it was futile. Before she could fire the gun, she saw the monster pounce on her, and its huge mouth stretched towards her lips.

The girl’s face was stricken with horror, and her screams abruptly ceased as the mutated creature drooled, its mouth opening like petals, releasing an egg the size of a fist. Coiled by the tongue, the egg was forcefully stuffed into her mouth, and her throat swelled as the egg was pushed in, all the way down.

The girl emitted a sharp pain in her whimpering, her mouth stretched wide, her lips split, like a dying catfish, staring at the ceiling with eyes devoid of life.

When Tang Zheng piloted the helicopter over the small town, the mutated creature had just finished embedding its eggs and had returned to Long Street. Hearing the sound of car engines, it bolted towards the outskirts of town.

The newbies, already aboard a Hummer ready to leave, saw the mutated creature and immediately urged the driver to go. The gunmen opened fire to block its path, and several rocket shells were also fired, all of which the creature dodged.

Tang Zheng locked onto the mutated creature and shot a Hellfire missile. Sensing danger, the monster fled swiftly, while also extending its bone shield on the left arm.

Two hits landed, shattering the mutated creature’s shield and mutilating its left arm. The monster was tossed and rolled away. Seizing the opportunity, Tang Zheng released the remaining Hellfire rockets one after another.

Several fireballs rose on Long Street, engulfing the mutated creature among billowing gunsmoke, obscuring Tang Zheng’s view. He glanced at the fuel gauge and circled the area warily.

Whoosh, a large stone, like one flung from a catapult, whistled through the air towards the helicopter. It was too close and too fast, and although Tang Zheng pulled the control stick, the helicopter’s tail was still struck, sending off sparks and causing the aircraft to wobble.

After throwing another stone, the mutated creature emerged from the gunsmoke, now nothing but a pile of tattered flesh, barely recognizable as human. But its heart was not destroyed, it was still alive.

Tang Zheng wanted to swiftly adjust the aircraft and pelt the pile of flesh with more rocket shells, but the damaged helicopter spiraled out of control, plummeting to the ground.

The newbies on the Hummer all watched, not coming to help, while the traffic police and Zhao Dongtao hid in a house—without heavy firepower, they dared not recklessly intervene.

"Damn it, explode!" Tang Zheng stopped trying to control the aircraft and while it spun, he aimed the nose at the mess of flesh and unleashed all remaining rockets in the launcher, also pressing the fire button, the machine gun burst into action, and 30mm bullets created a trail of bullet holes in the cobblestones of Long Street.

Only two rockets hit the mutated creature, but heavily damaged, it was on the brink of death.

The helicopter crash-landed with a thud, its armor chipped away. Even though Tang Zheng had turned off the propellers, they had not stopped spinning and hit the ground, the blades snapped off, shooting out and embedding into a wall some distance away.

The fuel tank was ruptured, aviation fuel was leaking out, and flames were still visible on the aircraft’s body. It could explode at any moment.

Tang Zheng opened the cabin, grabbed his rifle, climbed out, and ran away while shooting at the mass of broken flesh. He also threw out the two hand grenades he had left on him.

"What are you doing? Use the AT-4 and focus fire on the monster!" Tang Zheng roared as he ran toward the abandoned tank, which still had an AT-4 inside. He was determined to finish off the creature for good.

The traffic police and Zhao Dongtao also rushed out, calling for help. This time Zhou Meng wasn’t held back by Su Su and drove the Hummer onto the battlefield, firing rocket shells at the mass of rotten flesh.

The mutated creature’s vitality was strong. Even in an almost crippled state, it kept wriggling, trying to regenerate.

Tang Zheng didn’t give it a chance, firing continuously until he had nearly depleted the tank’s store of AT-4 rocket shells. The ground around the mutated creature was blasted flat by ten centimeters, forming an alarming big pit.

"Cease fire!" Tang Zheng shouted and walked toward the mass of broken flesh. The gunsmoke had yet to dissipate, and the surrounding streets and walls were all splattered with chunks of flesh and bloodstains, a stench of blood and decay wafting through the air.

The newbies didn’t dare to come closer, watching from a distance. Tang Zheng took a few steps, and among the remnants of flesh, he spotted a brilliant Star Seed. He immediately picked it up, wiped off the stain on his pants, and pocketed it.

"Who should I give it to?" Tang Zheng hesitated as the thing represented a life. He couldn’t choose between Song Xin, Zhao Dongtao, or even Black Long Straight.

After the skirmish, the small town returned to calm. One by one, the newbies came back to see Tang Zheng unharmed, which surprised them.

"Weren’t you bitten?" Su Su asked, then realizing her words were inappropriate, quickly corrected herself, "How did you pull through?"

Just as Tang Zheng was about to answer to dispel their doubts, he couldn’t help but cough and spat out a mouthful of blood. He hadn’t recovered yet, and the fight had caused more injury to his organs.

About a dozen newbies were startled and quickly backed away, distancing themselves from him.

"Are you really okay?" The traffic police hesitated, sizing up Tang Zheng, noting that aside from looking unwell, he had no other symptoms.

"Definitely all right. More than a dozen hours have passed. If Tang Zheng had been infected by the virus, he’d have mutated long ago," Zhao Dongtao supported his brother, choosing to think positively.

"Disperse. I’m going to wash up and eat!" Tang Zheng, worried about Song Xin and the other two and seeing the attitude of the newbies, had no desire to explain and headed for his room.

"Ungrateful. Without Tang Zheng, we might all have died here." Zhao Dongtao cast a disdainful glance at the others and went after Tang Zheng. Soon, he saw Tian Tian come out of the house, her steps faltering.

"You actually survived? Lucky you!" The house had been occupied by the mutated creature. Tian Tian had only a cracked corner of her mouth but was otherwise unharmed. Kong Licheng couldn’t help but remark that, aside from strength, luck played a part as well.

Tian Tian didn’t dare respond, for fear that if the others learned the details, they would worry she was infected with the virus and abandon her. Just recalling the mutated creature’s disgusting tongue entering her mouth, penetrating her throat, and inserting a disgusting egg, caused her to kneel down abruptly and begin to vomit, with bile and gastric juice flowing out of her mouth, emitting a foul smell.

"Are you okay?" Jing Lan ran over to help Tian Tian. "Tang Zheng, do you have any medicine? Tian Tian is hurt."

Tang Zheng had gone back to look for the helicopter and hadn’t witnessed the scene, so naturally, he was unaware that the mutated creature had laid eggs in the female student’s stomach.

"I do have some, help her inside," Tang Zheng glanced at Tian Tian, who was covering her mouth. He didn’t see any visible injuries, or else he would have been wary, as the corner of the mouth was not normally susceptible to injury.

Song Xin and Black Long Straight had been hiding in the bedroom the whole time, and Tang Zheng had deliberately lured the mutated creature away during the fight, so they were unharmed. Seeing Tang Zheng walk in, Song Xin greeted him with concern, while Black Long Straight went to fetch water.

"Are you hungry? I’ll go find some food and grab some medicine," Song Xin nodded to Jing Lan. "You comfort Tian Tian."

"I have some in my backpack," Tang Zheng said from the bedroom door, glanced at the bed, and noticed Dong Zixuan was still asleep, breathing steadily. He didn’t want to rashly let his companions use the Seed until it was safe.

After less than fifteen minutes of rest, Tang Zheng had barely managed to eat a few crackers and canned food and hadn’t changed his clothes when the Trojan’s announcement blared.

"Please rescue Eve within 48 hours and deliver her to her father, Simpson. Failure to complete the mission will result in collective extermination as punishment!"

"Eve currently resides in New York City. Please act quickly!"

Beep, beep, a map appeared on the wristwatch with a red dot labeled with Eve’s name. (To be continued. If you like this work, welcome to Qidian (qidian.com) to vote for recommendation tickets, monthly tickets. Your support is my greatest motivation.)
