Chapter 1191: Chapter 67: Seed Ownership_2
Song Xin silently watched Tang Zheng taking a nap on the lawn and reached out to scratch his cheek, then she couldn’t help but smile. She wished this was a dream where she could stay with him forever, never waking up. Unfortunately, neither gods nor Buddha could hear her prayers.
"Engine noise? Looks like the traffic police have arrived." Tang Zheng stood up and peering through the scope, he saw the Hummer convoy had already driven into the small town.
"Let’s head back, be careful not to catch a cold." Tang Zheng moved to stand, but suddenly his calf gave out, and he stumbled, nearly falling over.
"What’s wrong?" Song Xin was startled and steadied him by the arm.
"I’m fine, probably just too tired, or maybe it’s the virus." Tang Zheng felt dizzy and sensed a significant loss of strength as he pushed away Song Xin’s hand.
"No, you won’t get infected." Song Xin wasn’t afraid. Even if Tang Zheng turned into a zombie, she would stay with him till death. She had already lost four years and didn’t want any more regrets.
"Stay away from me until tomorrow morning," Tang Zheng insisted as he pried Song Xin’s hand off and headed towards the town, feeling the weakness in his body and beginning to cough, his throat itchy.
The newbies got off the Hummers, but without Tang Zheng’s command, they didn’t dare to leave; they squatted on the ground waiting for him. Thankfully, Dong Zixuan, being attentive, organized a few people to carry food from the small supermarket.
As Tang Zheng approached, the group of newbies instantly stood up. Without him, they all would have died in the city.
"Everyone go to the west side and pick up a set of tactical vests and assault rifles from the soldiers’ corpses," Tang Zheng waved his hand. "After collecting enough ammunition, find a room and rest." He was about to choose a house at random when he saw Zhao Dongtao calling him.
"Tao Ran has cleared a few rooms; let’s sleep together." Zhao Dongtao had a good impression of Tao Ran. If she hadn’t lost an eye, he would have pursued her.
"No, I’ll sleep alone. Where’s my backpack?" Tang Zheng declined, holding back his cough. Not seeing his backpack amid the tanks, he asked Zhao Dongtao.
"Tao Ran moved it inside the house for you."
"Dong Zixuan, get my backpack for me," Tang Zheng gave the policewoman a look and walked into a house next to the tanks.
The policewoman was savvy enough to guess that he might want to consult her about something.
"What’s wrong with him? He doesn’t look very well. Is he alright?" Zhao Dongtao watched Tang Zheng’s retreating figure, suddenly remembering Li Wenbo had bitten a chunk off of him, and he gasped in shock.
"Why are you making such a fuss?" Song Xin gave Zhao Dongtao a disdainful glance and followed Tang Zheng into the house, concerned.
The newbies munched on biscuits and complained that Kong Licheng and his group who arrived earlier had it easy. But after seeing their dejected faces and learning three had died, they realized they had been too harsh on Tang Zheng. After all, he had cleared the zombie town at great personal risk.
Although Tang Zheng knew the likelihood of zombies hiding was small, he still cautiously checked each room. Upon reaching the second floor, he heard a faint knocking from the master bedroom.
"Come out, or I’ll open fire." Tang Zheng pushed the door with his foot and entered with his rifle raised, aiming at the wardrobe.
The knocking grew louder, accompanied by the low growl unique to zombies. Their vocal cords were decayed, only capable of producing such sounds.
Tang Zheng pulled the trigger, and bullets pierced through the wardrobe, sending wood chips flying.
After firing twenty rounds, the knocking stopped. Tang Zheng, still unsettled, fired a burst from his machine gun. After reloading with a new ammo clip, he finally opened the wardrobe.
A small, emaciated zombie lay inside, its head blown apart. Its parents, upon seeing zombies in the town, had hidden their child away. Still, it had not escaped the fate of becoming one of them.
Dong Zixuan ran upstairs, panting. Seeing that everything was fine, she tossed Tang Zheng’s backpack onto the big bed.
"Speak up, what did you need me for?" The policewoman stared into Tang Zheng’s eyes, noticing they were filled with blood strands and his complexion slightly pale. Her heart skipped a beat, and she involuntarily placed her hand on her handgun.
"I can’t turn into a zombie just yet, if you’re worried, you can come over tomorrow morning to check." Tang Zheng made a trip to the bathroom and discovered there was still hot water, cheered, and immediately stripped off his clothes to take a shower, "Watch out for me."
"You’re not a young maiden, who would peep at you?" Dong Zixuan complained, but still swept her eyes over Tang Zheng’s well-built back muscles. She hadn’t noticed before that although he wasn’t the muscular hunk type, his physique and muscles were perfect, brimming with power like a cheetah, without an ounce of excess fat.
"Among those people, who can you trust?" Tang Zheng guessed the answer was none.
"What do you mean? Su Su maybe, but she’s with Zhou Meng." Dong Zixuan looked puzzled, her brows slightly furrowed, "What are you plotting?"
"When the Tyrant died, it dropped a Seed. I picked it up; it can give ordinary people superpowers. Do you want to use it?" Tang Zheng introduced all four Seeds to her.
"Then why don’t you have superpowers?" Dong Zixuan was skeptical; despite his strength, he was chased around by the Tyrant like a dog in distress.
"Didn’t you hear when we entered the game? Trojan stripped us of our abilities." Tang Zheng laughed, "If I had powers, I would have already wiped out all the zombies in this city."
"Bragging." Dong Zixuan obviously didn’t know about the mass-killing prowess of the Steel Sky, "Are there any side effects?"
"In a normal game, activating a Seed would put you to sleep for 12 hours. I don’t know about this one, plus there’s a chance you could die." Tang Zheng shared his concerns honestly. He had almost figured out the policewoman’s character; ninety percent, she would use it.
"So you think I should find someone I trust to watch over the night?" Dong Zixuan crossed her arms and leaned against the wall, "Where’s the Seed? Let me take a look."
"In my pocket." Tang Zheng saw the Tyrannosaurus Protective Clothing on the ground and gave a wry smile. It was so fragile that it couldn’t even defend against Li Wenbo’s teeth, and Dong Zixuan accidentally tore a hole in it.
"It’s really beautiful." Dong Zixuan held the Seed in her palm. It was an olive-shaped jade stone about the size of a cat’s eye. On touching her skin, the golden halo that flowed through it instantly surged, swirled with strands of light, and finally formed a halo that wrapped around the Seed.
Tang Zheng just smiled and didn’t answer. For a regular newbie, the value of this thing was a life.
"Do you have a Star Seed?" Dong Zixuan was somewhat unimpressed with the Golden Seed; people always chase after the best, plus the abilities activated by the Star Seed were the most compatible with the user.
"I do, but I can’t get it out." Tang Zheng was helpless.
"It must be very precious and hard to obtain, right?" the policewoman hesitated, with some questions in mind, "Why not give it to Song Xin? Worried about the side effects?"
"Yes." Tang Zheng’s straightforward and candid response left the policewoman somewhat speechless, not knowing what to say.
The room fell silent as Song Xin glanced at the staircase entrance but ultimately didn’t come to disturb them.
"I’ll use it, have Song Xin stay up with me." Dong Zixuan made her decision, "I hope when I wake up again, I can have an amazing ability and you won’t turn into a zombie."
Violent coughing replaced the response; Tang Zheng’s throat felt almost torn, and he spat out saliva with traces of blood in it.
"If you’re not afraid, then sleep in the room next door, and call Song Xin and Tao Ran over too. I’ll ensure your safety for the remaining time," Tang Zheng said, unable to hide his cough any longer.
"You better take care of yourself first." Dong Zixuan understood what Tang Zheng meant, "Don’t worry, I’ll take care of the two of them."
"Thanks, add Zhao Dongtao as well. Although he’s a bit impulsive in handling things, he’s a decent person." Tang Zheng leaned against the wall, in discomfort, feeling somewhat suffocated. The hot water showered his body, yet he still felt very cold.
"You’re physically strong, you’ll be fine." Dong Zixuan felt this comfort was unhelpful and teased him, "I think it’s better to stay somewhere else, if you turn into a zombie, you’ll definitely become a Licker."
"When the time comes, you can blow my head off." Tang Zheng laughed, quickly rinsed off the shower gel from his body, towel-dried himself briefly, "Alright, I’m coming out now, don’t peek."
"I wouldn’t peek at you even if I were a ghost." Dong Zixuan turned and left to find Song Xin and Tao Ran, and in the end, she still slept in the room next to Tang Zheng’s. (To be continued.
