Chapter 1185: Chapter 62 Heavy Casualties_2
The traffic police and Zhou Meng were guarding the rear, fearing more zombies would pop up when they suddenly heard turmoil ahead.
"Keep quiet," the traffic police urgently advised, but failed, "Zhou Meng, come with me to kill the zombies."
Before the traffic police could act, two Lickers appeared from the ceiling, seeing a large group of ’food,’ they immediately pounced down.
Two unlucky ones were overwhelmed, their necks were instantly bitten, and blood sprayed over a meter away, splashing on the people around them.
The smell of blood was overpowering, and death spread.
"Everyone, stay calm!" the traffic police tried to stop them, but the crowd desperately tried to escape, pushing backwards, making it impossible for him to stand steady. Moreover, with heads moving in front of him, he couldn’t shoot.
The two people bitten by the Lickers had not yet died and were struggling in agony; one of them was Tang Zheng’s classmate.
"What kind of luck is this?" Not only Zhou Meng but all the newbies felt they were unbelievably unlucky. Besides that, it was also a matter of courage. If the pioneer had killed the Lickers immediately, the uncontrollable chaos wouldn’t have occurred. Of course, having a strong group leader like Tang Zheng, even if things turned into a total mess, he could still stabilize the situation unlike the traffic police.
The two Lickers broke into the crowd, splitting the newbies into two groups. The dozen people who were blocked were extremely panicked, screaming for help. Such screams, however, attracted even more zombies.
A female waiter zombie rushed over and grabbed a woman’s arm, biting it. Two chef zombies didn’t want to be outdone and joined in the feast.
"Get away!" Huang Shan couldn’t squeeze to the front and was nearly frantic, grabbing Cao Rongxuan as a meat shield with one hand and firing a gun with the other, sadly missing their heads.
Cao Rongxuan felt someone biting his shoulder and woke up in pain, then saw a rotting head stretch over and bite him hard on the cheek.
"I’m doomed!" Just as Cao Rongxuan had this thought, his nose was bitten off by a zombie, and then his back was forcefully pushed, tumbling out with the zombie.
Huang Shan pushed Cao Rongxuan away, but his situation was just as bad, as another chef zombie grabbed him, leaving teeth marks on his neck.
The woman who was bitten on the arm struggled and screamed for help, trying hard to push the zombie’s head away, but it was useless, and no one came to her rescue. She was then overwhelmed by the zombie and bitten to death.
More zombies flooded into the corridor, devouring Cao Rongxuan and Huang Shan. Some zombies continued to chase others.
"I don’t want to die!" Cao Rongxuan felt severe pain all over his body and, watching the zombies surround him, suddenly regretted competing with Tang Zheng. He admitted to himself that Tang Zheng was a person who valued past relationships. A few kind words would definitely have helped him, but now it was too late.
Seeing the zombie horde behind them, the blocked newbies panicked. Two of them attempted to escape along the sides, next to the staircase railing and wall, but were pounced on by Lickers, biting them. The others took the opportunity to rush forward and finally escaped.
The Lickers, leaving their wounded prey, turned and charged, pinning down another two and biting them. Other zombies rushed up, saw the living, and bit wildly. These four unlucky ones were clearly not going to survive, including a miner.
"It’s impossible to go below; run through the rooms!" the traffic police finally had a stroke of genius for an escape plan. He and Zhou Meng led the way, charging into the second floor. They disregarded the few zombies that heard the noise coming from the corridor, shot the door of a street-side room open, and rushed in, heading straight for the window.
A large group of newbies hurried to follow, as falling behind at this point meant certain death. No one wanted to resist; they were all fleeing for their lives.
The Lickers continued their chase, catching up to a man and a woman from behind. They pounced on them, biting into the back of their necks and aggressively tearing off a chunk of flesh with a shake of their heads.
Hearing the continuous screams from behind and the shouts urging them to run faster, the newbies panicked. Several men caught in the middle, complaining that those in front were running too slowly and using their strong bodies, began to push forward forcefully. This caused mayhem, and several were trampled.
"Make way, let the children go first!" A man with a buzz cut, carrying his son, struggled to push forward. Seeing no one making way, he defiantly swung his shotgun and fired wildly. The individuals in front of him bled from the back of their heads and moved aside, one woman even fainted outright.
A police officer was struck on the back of the head and when he turned around, he saw the flat-topped man’s gun barrel swinging towards him. He couldn’t dodge and took another hit, instantly bruising his face and squashing his right eye shut, tears streaming down as he burst into fury.
"Fuck your mother!" the officer pulled out his handgun, turned off the safety, and fired five shots at the flat-topped man’s back as he ran past.
Bang, bang, with the gunshots, the flat-topped man felt a pain in his vest, his legs gave way, and he fell down, his last sight being his son’s blood-stained back and the falling figure of a child.
The bullets had passed through the flat-topped man and killed the child he was holding. The officer was stunned, not expecting to have killed a child. Even as the crowd behind him bumped into him, making him sway, he forgot to run, regretting his impulsive shooting upon seeing the dead.
"I didn’t mean to do it!" the officer muttered. The Licker wouldn’t wait for his remorse, it pounced on him, pinning him to the ground and bit down fiercely.
The officer didn’t struggle to survive but entangled with the Licker instead, buying time for others to escape, trying to atone for his mistake.
Another Licker pounced on a girl, ripping a chunk of flesh from her cheek. She struggled, but to no avail, and as more zombies caught up, she had no chance of survival. In that moment, she regretted not having stayed with Tang Zheng, which might have saved her life. She was Tang Zheng’s classmate.
Zhou Meng and the traffic police ran to the window, broke it, and seeing it was only three meters off the ground with no security measures, they jumped down immediately, overjoyed.
Seeing this, the other newbies dared not linger and followed suit.
"Quick, set up defenses." The traffic police directed the newbies, then took a few steps back and aimed at the glass window, ready to attack the approaching zombies.
The woman knocked unconscious by the flat-topped man awoke to pain, opened her eyes, and saw several decaying zombies surrounding her, her body dripping with fresh blood.
The main street was not peaceful either. Hearing the commotion of the newbies, some zombies came out of the houses and gathered here.
"Tang Zheng, show up please!" Everyone looked to the sky, hoping the group leader would appear and kill all the zombies.
The soldiers on the high wall were shocked to see the newbies suddenly jumping out of the hotel windows, and upon spotting the emerging zombies, they began to attack. At the same time, the white people hiding in the house across the street also flooded into the main street, being pursued by zombies as well.
"Let us out!" Tang Zheng, who had met the military enthusiast George in front of the bicycle shop, pulled his girlfriend and ran under the high wall, yelled at the soldiers, and periodically turned back to fire at the pursuing zombies with a machine gun.
A Licker leapt and knocked a black man down on the steps.
As the black man was bitten and beyond help, the soldiers immediately concentrated fire on the Licker, and someone even fired an AT-4 rocket shell.
The Licker was blown to pieces, but there were more zombies still. George and his group yelled angrily at the soldiers, hoping to escape.
The officer promptly climbed the wall and bluntly refused; these people might all be infected with the virus, and if he let them go, he would be facing a military tribunal.
"FU~CK!" George suddenly cursed, raised his general-purpose machine gun, and fired a burst at the wall, hitting the officer in the chest, who fell down instantly, stirring up a hornet’s nest as the soldiers, stunned initially, began to retaliate.
George was grazed on the shoulder, and three of his companions were killed, collapsing on the ground. At this moment, the main street was in total chaos.
"Gunshots? What’s happening?" Ding Jian wanted to show some concern, "Could others be in trouble?"
"Then why aren’t you with them?" Kong Licheng, who hated such hypocrisy, couldn’t help but curse, Ding Jian didn’t dare retort and fell silent.
"We’ll know soon. Sit tight, we’re taking off." Tang Zheng had already started the engine, and once the helix reached a stable rotational speed, he pulled the control lever and the helicopter lifted off the ground, slowly flying towards the main street.
