Chapter 1150: Chapter 33 Cheongsam Woman
This was an office that covered three hundred square meters, with dozens of neatly arranged blue desks, and three passages in the middle. Every ten meters, there would be a large flowerpot with an unnameable plant. However, the green leaves had withered, showing signs of death.
The automatic disinfection and fire-fighting systems had been activated, and a large amount of disinfectant mixed with clean water had traveled through the pipelines to every corner of the underground laboratory, hence everything was damp. A slightly sour smell floated in the air.
After confirming that the sound of high-heels was coming from the front desk lobby, Tang Zheng entered the office, took a quick look around, and hid behind a desk.
"If she doesn’t come here, I’ll follow her. She might be a member of some group leader’s team." Rarely encountering prey, Tang Zheng wasn’t going to let her escape, "Hmm? Most of the staff here should have turned into zombies and then been lured away by someone."
Tang Zheng saw two long female legs, clad in flesh-colored silk stockings and white high-heels, lying behind a desk a few meters away.
"Dead?" Tang Zheng thought it was a dead human, but then the two legs began to tremble slightly, and a rotting right hand grabbed the edge of the desk, then the upper body straightened up.
A blond woman in a uniform appeared in Tang Zheng’s view, her entire face bitten to a pulp, with flesh and blood blurred and a low, groaning sound coming from her throat as she looked around.
Tang Zheng immediately curled up, slowed his breathing to a crawl, taking down a single zombie was easy, but it would alert the prey outside. He wanted to change his position, but the sound of high-heels in the passage was getting closer.
"Troublesome!" No matter who the person was, the fact that they dared to move in silence wearing high-heels, and did not worry about the noise, indicated their strength and confidence.
The female white-collar zombie stood up and moved towards the sound—towards Tang Zheng.
Tang Zheng glanced behind him, the desks were arranged in neat rows with nowhere to hide, and the chairs wouldn’t cover him either, so once the female zombie passed by, she would inevitably spot him.
"Bothersome." Although squatting, Tang Zheng could already see the blond hair of the female zombie, but he didn’t panic and actively thought about a strategy.
On the desk lay a computer with a black screen, a stack of books, and wet manuscripts; to the left was a photo frame containing a family picture—the father holding his daughter, the mother with her arm around them, all with happy smiles, but by now, they had probably all turned into zombies.
"Throwing debris to make noise and lead the zombie away obviously won’t work." Tang Zheng watched the pen, listening carefully, as the sound of high-heels outside was approaching quickly, and the footsteps of the female zombie could also be heard.
"Wait, this could be a good opportunity for a sneak attack." Tang Zheng prepared to use the zombie to distract the prey so he could ambush her, but it required the woman to arrive quickly, "Where did that woman come from? The footsteps that suddenly sounded must be from the elevator, but would a normal person take the elevator when there’s a problem in the laboratory? And judging by her behavior, she’s no rookie. She’s not worried, hmm, that means she knows the building inside out."
"Wait, she might have dropped directly from the elevator shaft. That clanging noise might have been made when lifting the elevator cover." Tang Zheng’s brain analyzed the information, kept his eye on the zombie, and listened intently, "Stay calm, you should now be simulating the attack scenario, thinking of strategies for all kinds of emergencies, instead of pondering over these things."
The zombie was near, and so was the woman outside.
...
After completing her mission, Ada fled along the planned route, descended the elevator shaft using the steel cable, only to find that the zombies here had already been killed.
"SWAT? Special crisis management team? Eastern European anti-government armed forces? Anlanke’s recovery team? Or someone like me?" Ada’s mind conjured several possibilities, as she had briefly exchanged fire with these individuals in the building before, but upon seeing the dead body’s gaunt face, all were ruled out, and she frowned.
"Another group of civilians? Or Chinese?" Ada thought of the other civilians she had encountered, not understanding why these people would come here. She had wanted to take a captive, but there was too little time during the operation.
"Good, now I can find out." Although Ada knew the structure of the building by heart, she still took out a metal block the size of a thumbnail, pressed it, and a 3D map of the underground laboratory popped up. She flicked her finger and quickly found the relevant section, "Hmm, once out of the transfer storage, I can leave. Now, I finally have some personal time."
Ada was a cautious woman. She glanced at the passage and heard footsteps inside the office area. She carefully followed after them.
"Heh, at least one person remains." Ada was too experienced, and at a glance, she noticed many clues, "Such a heavy backpack, a woman might be able to lift it, but the muscle on this corpse certainly couldn’t."
Wen Xiao’s corpse was sitting against the wall, her arms falling on both sides of her body. If it had been a suicide, the posture would definitely be chaotic—this clearly was done by someone who didn’t want to dirty their companion’s body.
"She must have detected me and fled in a hurry, no noise, that means she’s hiding nearby." Ada looked at the bullet hole in Wen Xiao’s head, then at the trail of blood droplets on the floor extending from the lobby, although diluted by the accumulated water, they still were clearly distinguishable. Combined with the bloodstained parts of the clothing, it proved the body had been carried for a while.
"Just an ordinary prey," she relaxed at the sight of his many flaws. As an elite special agent, she had the capital to look down on others.
The white-collar zombie woman saw Ada and picked up her pace.
"Tsk, just a fish that slipped through the net," Ada didn’t consider the zombie a threat. Her gaze searched the office, delaying the killing shot, letting it cover more ground — perhaps it would scare the prey out.
"Cunning!" Tang Zheng tried to curl up as much as possible, hiding behind a chair to minimize exposure. Just by the sound of footsteps, he knew she was beside Wen Xiao. The composure she displayed facing the zombie alone spoke volumes about the difficulty of the prey.
"No, Wen Xiao? Backpack? Bloodstains, I’ve got too many flaws — she must’ve deduced I’m hiding in the office already. I need to shift strategies." Tang Zheng immediately discarded his previous attack simulation. "With so many flaws and her elite demeanor, maybe she’ll be a bit contemptuous. I’ll play to that, exaggerate the weakness, and completely feign vulnerability."
Tang Zheng quickly settled on a tactic. He was ready to bet the zombie wouldn’t discover him, but instead, he got up and fled just as it entered the corridor.
"So it’s just a civilian after all," Ada saw the prey, a young man in sportswear holding a G36C assault rifle, panicked and running, his face filled with fear. Because his clothes concealed his body, she couldn’t judge Tang Zheng’s strength by his muscles.
To Ada, a living person posed more danger than a zombie, especially one armed with a gun. Thus, she aimed her MP5K submachine gun at Tang Zheng and fired single shots.
Clang, Tang Zheng deliberately panted loudly, frantically trying to escape. As he saw her raising her gun towards him, he pretended to stumble on a chair and fell to the ground.
"Idiot," Ada cursed. Tang Zheng’s clumsiness made her let her guard down again. His entire body was hidden behind the office desk, obstructing her shot. However, she didn’t move the muzzle away, keeping an eye on the spot, ready to fire.
"If I stand up, she’s definitely going to blow my head off. This woman is ruthless," Tang Zheng thought as he lay on the ground, watching the approaching zombie. He moved while aiming and firing his gun.
"Disadvantages can turn into advantages, though," Tang Zheng intentionally showed off his semi-automatic assault rifle to her, then screamed in panic, "Get back, monster!"
"A civilian model? Really is civilian equipment," Ada saw Tang Zheng get up from a few meters away. But after only a few steps, he was distracted by firing and bumped into an office desk, falling once more.
Whiz, whiz, Ada fired, bullets hitting the desk and leaving bullet holes.
As Tang Zheng moved toward the cross-corridor formed by the office desks behind him, he let the zombie close in while calculating the prey’s remaining bullets.
Ada kept firing to maintain tension on the prey, hoping for a mistake. As she moved closer, after seeing his clumsy response, she felt he was not much of a threat and thought of capturing a captive for interrogation.
"Shame there are no hand grenades for a trap; I’d send you straight to hell," as the zombie got close and leaned in to bite. Tang Zheng fired from behind the cover of the desk, killing it, then mimicked the sound of a zombie eating flesh to deceive her.
"Could that woman be Ada, from the Biohazard series?" Although he only caught a glimpse, Tang Zheng had seen she was a woman, someone familiar-looking, with short hair, dressed in a red cheongsam, holding an MP5K. Besides her ammo clip, she had a small backpack on her back.
Ada crossed the corridor to appear opposite him, readying to fire as she saw Tang Zheng struggling under the zombie.
"Not good, the zombie’s head didn’t move." Although Ada’s attention was mostly on Tang Zheng, she noticed the wrongness of the zombie’s biting motion and immediately realized she’d been tricked. She darted for the safety of the nearby office desk, laying down suppressive fire, but it was too late. The man she thought was a clumsy civilian raised his gun and started shooting.
Ratatat, that was the MP5K firing in full auto. However, it didn’t suppress the striking sound of the civilian version rifle.
Bang, bang, the bullets followed a crafty trajectory, one burrowing into Ada’s right armature, another tearing through the cheongsam and grazing her calf, leaving behind blood.
Bang, Ada toppled to the ground behind the desk and, without hesitation, fled forward. Tang Zheng’s persistent footsteps indicated that he was in pursuit.
"Sly, hit a tough nut," Ada realized she’d been had!
