Chapter 1134: Chapter 19 Accidental Injury
The woman who was shouting held a child in her arms. When she saw that the three policemen led by Zhou Meng at the rear of the carriage had fired dozens of bullets without managing to kill the zombies chasing them, her face turned pale with fear, and she wanted Tang Zheng to come and help.
Zhou Meng felt very frustrated. Although they were policemen, at most they usually only handled handguns, and they barely had the chance to use semi-automatic assault rifles. Suddenly being called to action, they were doing well just to fire the gun properly. Due to their pride, they didn’t want the civilian Tang Zheng to interfere.
"You all try to shoot the guns yourselves, make way, sit down, don’t block the path." There was no immediate danger ahead, so Tang Zheng, carrying an L115A3 sniper rifle and with three ammo clips in his pocket, ran towards the rear of the carriage.
"No way, I need to change into a military uniform and get a tactical vest." All of Tang Zheng’s combat gear was restricted in the Space Wristwatch, leaving him with no place even to store ammo clips.
The survivors tried their best to move aside, making room for Tang Zheng. Even the slowest among them realized he was the main combatant after witnessing his skills in killing the zombies.
"Are these mutated zombies?" The traffic policeman, also holding a shotgun, followed over. There were a total of six mutated zombies chasing after the school bus. Unlike the slow jog of common zombies, these monsters had elongated and thick arms, allowing them to run fast on all fours like rabid dogs, quickly closing the distance.
The traffic policeman stuck his upper body out the car window and shot, but the bullet went off God knows where.
"The position is too awkward, it’s hard to aim." The traffic policeman pulled back in and saw all the newbies looking at him, so he quickly made an excuse but felt a bit ashamed at heart and cursed silently for the disgrace.
Tang Zheng took out a Beretta 92F and aimed at the rear car window, pulling the trigger twice—bang, bang—creating a spider-web of cracks. Then he kicked out, breaking a hole about ten centimeters in radius, and then extended the muzzle out the hole.
Before Zhou Meng felt that Tang Zheng had aimed properly, he had already fired. He couldn’t see the trajectory of the bullet, but the head of the leading mutated zombie suddenly exploded. Thanks to inertia, its body lunged forward a few more steps before tumbling to the ground.
With a ding sound, as Tang Zheng worked the rifle’s bolt, the cartridge popped out and fell to the ground, emitting a clear metallic sound. In less than two seconds, another gunshot rang out, and another zombie had its head blown off.
Before Tang Zheng emptied an ammo clip, the mutated zombies were all cleared out. The newbies sitting at the back of the carriage let out a solid sigh of relief. However, they soon started to feel anxious again as more and more humans on the streets were being attacked by zombies, either turning into one of them or being devoured completely.
"All gone!" an old man muttered, watching a few zombies squatting next to a pregnant woman, their mouths dripping with blood and organs scattered all around, unable to bear watching any longer.
Humans couldn’t organize any effective resistance against the zombies’ frenzied attacks and were merely struggling in vain. Besides this school bus, there were other vehicles racing down the road. Some people saw a chance to escape and shouted as they rushed towards the bus, wanting to catch a ride, but no one stopped for them.
"Careful." Uncle Wang had just shouted a warning when the school bus, swerving violently in an S-shape to dodge the wreckage of two damaged cars, shook the survivors so hard they nearly vomited.
A miner named Li Xizhu, sitting against a seat, was fiddling with an MP5 submachine gun. The sudden swerve caught him off balance, and as he fell, his finger accidentally pulled the trigger.
With a bang, a bullet shot out, hitting a man’s arm squarely. The unlucky fellow screamed in agony.
"My arm!" The unfortunate man shrieked, tears streaming down his pain-wracked face. Observing his plight, the other survivors suddenly felt as if the firearms in their hands were unbearably hot and didn’t know what to do with them.
"Point all gun muzzles downward and lock the safeties." Tang Zheng shouted a reminder, ran to the side of the unlucky man, shouldered his rifle, and took out a survival folding knife from his pocket. He opened it and cut open the man’s clothes.
"It’s nothing serious, just a wound. As long as we stop the bleeding, it won’t cripple you, and you won’t die from it." Tang Zheng reassured Wu Xiao with his words, also to keep the other newbies calm. However, he sighed internally, thinking the guy was really unlucky; the bullet had hit his biceps brachii. With the tense situation and the bumpy ride, he didn’t have time to operate and remove the bullet.
"I really won’t die?" Wu Xiao, just in his early twenties, felt dizzy seeing his arm covered in blood.
"No, you won’t. When I find a hospital and get medical supplies, I’ll dress the wound properly. For now, make do with this." Tang Zheng tore off a piece of Wu Xiao’s shirt, turned it into a strip, and tied it around his arm to temporarily stop the bleeding, "Press on it yourself."
"Sorry, I didn’t mean to." Li Xizhu, panicked and utterly confused, quickly tried to discard the gun.
"Go to hell!" Wu Xiao clenched his teeth, wishing he could tear Li Xizhu apart. Li Xizhu, being earnest and simple, didn’t take offense but kept apologizing repeatedly.
Kong Licheng sneered, thinking that Wu Xiao’s chances in the survival game were basically over. With such an injury, self-preservation was a pipe dream. In this situation, there was no one to protect him. The wisest thing for him to do would be to forgive and make the naïve miner feel indebted to him and look after him willingly, but instead, he chose to curse, which was the most foolish move.
Dong Zixuan sighed, not reminding Tang Zheng to retrieve the bullets; she knew he wouldn’t make such a mistake. He hadn’t done it because the conditions didn’t allow.
"What are you still holding the gun for? Want to kill someone, huh?" Xiao Hu, lacking a gun, saw an opportunity, immediately walked over, and took the chance to chastise Li Xizhu and take his gun.
Confused, Li Xizhu had no decision to make and was ready to give up his gun.
"Thank goodness the MP5 was set to semi-automatic, otherwise a barrage of bullets would have turned this guy into a sieve. Better leave it to someone who knows how to use it," Xiao Hu said as he took the gun. Although he tried to contain his elation, his joy was evident on his face.
"Since you have two guns and say you know how to use them, then go ahead and kill some zombies in the front," Tang Zheng added without exposing Xiao Hu, just waiting for him to make a move.
"What?" Just as Xiao Hu was about to protest why he was being given orders, he noticed most of the newbies looking at him, and cold sweat immediately began to stream down his forehead. He wasn’t stupid; he knew if he refused, his status within the team would be in jeopardy, as nobody liked selfish people.
"You’re ruthless." Xiao Hu glared at Tang Zheng, noting this grudge, when suddenly a dark shadow burst out from the bushes and slammed hard into the car window on the right side.
With a bang, the car window cracked, and shards flew out, causing the nearby survivors to scream and instinctively dodge away from there.
It was a mutated zombie. Everyone’s attention had been on the injured Wu Xiao just before, completely missing its approach. After its attempted ambush failed, it fell but quickly recovered and leaped onto the roof of the vehicle. The thudding on top terrified the survivors, who kept their eyes fixed on the roof.
Bang, bang. Li Wenbo fired two shots with the shotgun, immediately covering the roof with bullet holes. The sound of gunshots and the smell of gunpowder lingered, causing the newbies to cover their ears; this type of shooting was safe, and he also wanted his share of the action, not to be outdone by Tang Zheng.
"Ignore it, it can’t get in. Take out the ones chasing us from behind first." After crossing the subway entrance by a hundred meters and the chaos subsiding a bit, the traffic situation improved, and the school bus began to accelerate. Uncle Wang had also made up his mind not to stop, even if Tong Dahong and the others hadn’t killed the zombies in front; he wouldn’t hesitate to run them over.
"Zixuan, check the map for directions, try to avoid streets with subway entrances," Tang Zheng called out as he continuously moved and shot. He wasn’t worried about wasting bullets; instead, he wanted to kill more zombies, aiming especially for the mutated ones, hoping that killing more would bring benefits.
"You really thought this through." Dong Zixuan glanced at Li Wenbo, who only knew how to shoot from inside the vehicle and had not made any kills. In comparison to Tang Zheng, who had slaughtered at least forty zombies, the discrepancy was vast.
"Be careful."
With a shout from Xu Zhifeng, the screeching of brakes filled the air, and turning around, Tang Zheng saw the entire windshield covered in blood.
"Did I kill someone?" Uncle Wang, gripping the steering wheel with his veins bulging on the back of his hand and his lips turning pale with cold sweat pouring out, thought he had hit a zombie, not expecting it to be a human.
"Uncle Wang, drive, the zombies are going to surround us!" Zhao Lei urged his colleague, because now there was no time to care about the life or death of others; saving their own skins was the priority.
Uncle Wang responded in a panic, but after the bus started, it was evident he couldn’t focus, and the vehicle kept swaying.
"Who knows how to drive this type of bus? Get them to take over," Cao Rongxuan stood up, speaking up for the first time.
The group had some luck as two men stood up.
"You’ll do." Tang Zheng picked one of the older men to replace Uncle Wang, and the school bus resumed its journey. Although they had left the subway line, as most citizens became aware of the biochemical terrorist attack on the city and started to flee, swarming to the main streets not just increased the number of vehicles but also the number of citizens crowded like ants.
Once again, traffic was congested, and the streets were filled with swearing and complaints. Horn sounds reached up to a hundred decibels, piercing to the extremes, all wanting to escape the city as quickly as possible, yet the more frantic they became, the more chaotic it was.
"What do we do now? We can’t get through." The driver, a middle-aged man named Liu Guohao, clenched his fist, pounding on the horn, which kept blaring, making the school bus seem like a beast awaiting slaughter.
Survivors’ eyes shifted to Tang Zheng, waiting for him to make a decision. Li Wenbo and Cao Rongxuan couldn’t contain their anger upon witnessing this scene.
"Get out of the bus and run," said Tang Zheng decisively. This street was jammed for five kilometers, and without traffic police control, they probably wouldn’t get through until evening.
The newbies didn’t move, thinking of the possible appearance of zombies; they preferred staying inside the ’iron canned head’ for what they believed was safer.
"The school bus can’t stop the zombies," Tang Zheng grabbed his backpack, "Open the doors."
Liu Guohao sighed deeply and opened the doors, taking his rifle and jumping off as well.
"The earlier we leave, the safer it is. Tao Ran, Song Xin, Dong Tao, hurry up," Tang Zheng jumped off. In this situation, he naturally prioritized helping his middle school classmates first.
Zixuan heard Tang Zheng not calling her name and pouted slightly. (To be continued. If you like this work, you are welcome to vote for recommendation tickets and monthly tickets on qidian.com. Your support is my biggest motivation.)
