Chapter 1109: Chapter 73: Calculation and Fierce Battle
"Living like that is no different from being dead!" the Old Man stubbornly insisted, gazing coldly at the city soon to be devoured by the great fire, "Besides, that’s not death, it’s purification. Only through this can their souls board the train to Heaven."
"That’s bullshit. What gives you the right to condemn everyone in the entire city?" Tang Zheng’s expression turned sad as he argued with the Old Man, "I believe that most people are good. You cannot deny everyone just because of a few scumbags, especially since you have no right to judge them."
"Young man, you still haven’t seen through this world," the Old Man sighed.
"All this nonsense. Let’s all work together, kill this final boss, and we’re through. Then we can go back and indulge in food, drink, and beauties. Isn’t that better than standing here in the cold wind?" Rogers was not a rash man. He verbally urged Tang Zheng to action, yet his movements showed no overreaction, as he didn’t want to fall victim to these schemers.
"Group Leader, don’t be impulsive." Anna was there too. Her interactions with Tang Zheng had taught her that this young man was not easy to deal with. One careless move and she could fall into a trap, especially with a cunning Dantai nearby. In her view, the situation of her team was really bad.
"Group Leader, Danny has been framed by them." The Red-Clothed Woman had been trying to contact Rogers without success, but she used her ability to timely arrive at the rooftop and immediately shouted to expose their true faces.
"Shouldn’t you investigate before speaking? Did you not see that we left three people too?" Dantai snorted coldly, lying without batting an eye, unafraid of being seen through since communications weren’t restored yet.
"You run quite fast, deserting in the face of battle, that’s a serious crime," Tang Zheng also retorted, disturbing their composure. Once they lost their calm, they might make a mistake.
"You..." The Red-Clothed Woman was almost mad with rage.
"Calm down, there must be some misunderstanding here," Anna mediated between the two parties, secretly cursing in her heart. Both teams were eager to see the other dead, so nothing anybody said could be trusted. The only thing to do was to stay alert and keep calm.
Anna didn’t realize the bias in her words; she meant Tang Zheng was untrustworthy. However, Rogers might think Tang Zheng could be being framed. After all, Tang Zheng’s conversation with her in the office that day had still subtly influenced her.
"Everyone shut up. Let’s work together, kill him, and split the spoils of war equally." Rogers’ IQ was just average, and it even dropped a bit in tense and urgent situations. He had survived so far by being brave and aggressive.
Pang Meiqin looked on with cold eyes and a disdainful smile. How useful was Rogers’ strength anyway, without a competent deputy group leader to assist him? The gap was clear. Moreover, Tang Zheng could completely neutralize his advantages. In short, the American Team was done for.
"Old Man, stop all this and start directing some firefighting efforts using your mayor status. You’ve slaughtered many high officials today; the administrative system must be in chaos," Tang Zheng was still acting, waiting for Rogers to make a move.
"Can’t you ever stop? Can’t you understand what I am saying?" Rogers exploded with anger, "Fine, I’ll go first."
Rogers lunged at the Old Man but was easily dodged.
"Hmm, if you’re sincere about cooperating, then show some guts," Dantai began to play along, agreeing to cooperate with Rogers, "Tang Zheng, we don’t have much time, think about it."
Distracted, Rogers didn’t go all out and was caught off-guard by the Old Man, who kicked him in the face, breaking his neck. If he hadn’t dodged quickly, his head could have been crushed halfway.
"FUCK." Rogers got injured, his true anger flaring as he started to exert more force.
"Aren’t you going to attack?" the Red-Clothed Woman glared at the Warhammer Team, urging them to engage.
"I guess you must be longing to see this city unacquainted?" After knocking Rogers away again, the Old Man put down the girl he was holding, wiped the blood from her lip, and then touched her brow with his finger, infusing vitality.
A halo of white light appeared above the girl’s head, her eyes suddenly opened wide, and she lunged at Rogers. Under the night sky, her floral dress fluttered, resembling a pure white lotus flower.
Weiwei kicked out her legs, which Rogers blocked, grabbing her ankle and slamming it towards the ground.
Boom, a pair of white wings sprang from the girl’s back, flapping once as the spots of light that composed the feathers shot out, sweeping over Rogers.
Rogers deployed a shield, blocking the attack.
In the time it took for this conversation, more survivors had charged up, except for Yu Manli’s group fighting the Ghost Riders, and some Japanese, everyone was now present.
"Final mission begins, please kill the mayor within fifteen minutes, or failure will result in the extermination of the survivors as punishment!"
"Demons Unlimited Wave starts, every three minutes, the number of demons teleporting to the hotel will increase!"
"Asakura Sakura, if your team does not reach the Rooftop Battlefield within five minutes, you will be exterminated,"
The brutal announcement by the Red Trojan Horse sounded, and at this moment, teleportation gates began appearing in the hotel, with a swarm of demons pouring in.
"Heh, now how will you filibuster?" Rogers was elated, entering third-order and fiercely bombarding Weiwei, but he discovered that this girl was far stronger than he had imagined.
"Everyone attack!" Tang Zheng also rushed out, aggressively attacking the Old Man.
Hiding in a guest room, Asakura Sakura looked at the companions around her, took a deep breath, and picked up a rifle.
"Let’s bet everything." The girl, resolute, dashed out of the room toward the elevator, followed by others, leaving only one girl trembling.
The Japanese were tremendously unlucky; just within the corridor was a Teleportation Gate, and six demons were startled and began their attack.
"Mr. Kagawa," Sister Asakura yelled.
"Cough, understood," Kagawa Shingo, his eyes bloodshot, bit his finger and flicked it, sending a drop of blood speeding out. As it neared the demons, it rapidly expanded and then burst.
Within the deafening blast, a nearby area of several meters was obliterated,
"Save me." The girl at the back suddenly screamed in panic and rushed out. Demons also started to appear inside the room.
Ota Nobe turned around just in time to see the girl who had just run out get caught by a demon. It pinned her down and tore off her entire arm.
The girl’s scream was heart-wrenching as more demons surged out, grabbing her ankles and brutally ripping off her thighs.
"Sister Asakura, save her!" Aihara Chiharu cried out hopelessly, but the rest of her words were stifled back into her throat, for the demons had already torn off the girl’s head. Blood spurted from her neck, staining the pristine walls red.
"Everyone, keep up. Mr. Kagawa, trouble you to lead," Asakura Sakura did not back down but followed right behind Kagawa Shingo, fiercely shooting. To command others, one needed not only IQ but also to lead by example; she knew if she did not demonstrate leadership, the team would quickly crumble.
On the rooftop battlefield, Rogers roared repeatedly. Even with Hero Mode activated, he could only manage a draw against the girl, which nearly drove him insane.
In Hero Mode, Tang Zheng contended with the Old Man; with the support of Dantai and the others, he actually held the upper hand against the Old Man.
Clash—the third shield of the Old Man was shattered, turning into sparkling light spots in the air. Seizing the opportunity, Tang Zheng lunged forward, leaving a wound on his body from Setsuyamaru.
"Why isn’t the Old Man as powerful as the girl he summoned?" Tang Zheng watched Rogers’ situation unfold, realizing even with the help of First Stage Anna and Second-Order Red-Clothed Woman, the fight was still going terribly.
With a spread of her wings, the girl knocked Rogers flying, then suddenly set her sights on the Red-Clothed Woman and shot two beams of light. Purification ignited simultaneously, causing her shield to quake and look terribly fragile.
Anna grew hesitant and started to hold back in her attacks; being only first stage, a single misstep could lead to her demise, and as for the newbies, they were even more out of their depth, all staying on the perimeter with nothing left to do but watch. Moreover, the Teleportation Gate at the rooftop also summoned low-level demons, forcing them to unite in resistance.
Tang Zheng recalled his several encounters with the Old Man; he was always found standing over a well, likely checking for traps, and each time he killed, it was corrupted demons...
"Could this guy be from the Summoning System?" Tang Zheng once again struck the Old Man’s cheek, and Meiqin’s Demon Ripper left a deep gash visible to the bone on his back.
The Old Man tumbled about, his body transforming to reveal his true form: a round flesh ball with four tentacles, a basketball-sized main eye, and numerous fist-sized eyes scattered around.
"You will all die." His roar was thunderous; the eyes charged energy and suddenly lit up, then shot out fiery red beams.
"Dodge." Tang Zheng leaped forward, dodging the beam like a bold eagle pouncing toward the flesh ball, but before he could land, a second wave of beams bombarded him.
Tang Zheng’s Light Defense Shield was shattered, his chitin shield trembled and cracked, and he was thrown backward.
The flesh ball writhed, detaching six eyes from its body which grew and metamorphosed into giant one-eyed demons, attacking the survivors.
"This guy is from Summoning System," Dantai also noticed.
As they had speculated, this BOSS had low offensive power and excelled in defense, using summoned demons to attack was its tactic.
The Old Man had brought the girl along precisely to guard against them. Just a moment before, he had infused seventy percent of his body’s energy into her. Otherwise, how could she have suppressed Rogers?
Rogers thought he had the upper hand, but was in fact at a severe disadvantage, and more tragically, he still hadn’t realized why. Since he had previously fought Tang Zheng and been slightly overpowered, he believed it was simply a matter of skill, never imagining that the summoned girl was even more formidable than the BOSS himself.
"Rogers, you’re just an underling. How long do you plan to keep fighting?" Dantai launched a Ghost Bomb, watching Rogers’ arm pierced by light patches, barely stifling a laugh, almost hurting himself internally.
"I’ve been at full firepower," Rogers roared. He indeed hadn’t slacked off; against the girl’s strong onslaught, holding anything back would only hasten his end.
"Meiqin, take care of those six one-eyed demons." Tang Zheng, with demon flame in his left hand and Setsuyamaru in his right, charged at the Old Man. "Xin Lan, bind its movements."
The young woman had already unleashed her power; the Ice Frost Arena spread, chasing after the flesh ball, aiming to freeze it, but it was shattered by the beams, and she had to divert some of her attention to help the newbies.
Meiqin shot forward, appearing in front of one of the one-eyed demons, swinging her sword with all her might. The Demon Ripper emitted a deafening motor sound as it stood on the demon’s neck, decapitating it as a head flew into the sky.
