Chapter 1094: Chapter 59: The New Nobility of the Police Force
"Director, do you not have any concept of human rights in your mind?" Hearing Tang Zheng’s fierce remarks, a bold reporter thought the topic could cause a sensation and immediately squeezed over, placing the microphone in front of him.
"You should ask those robbers if they know what human rights are. Go interview the shop owners who have been looted and see how the citizens who got hurt feel," Tang Zheng retorted before pushing the reporter aside, opening the car door, and getting in. He grabbed the communicator and issued commands, "All units, move out and quell the riots within half an hour, or else you can all take off your police uniforms."
The policemen also knew the situation had escalated too much and, worried about losing their jobs, didn’t dare to dawdle. They set off immediately, the police cars leaving the scene like a school of sharks.
The General Police Station naturally wouldn’t allow the chaos in South City to continue, as it might spread. Inspector Phil was in command, dispatching all available officers.
"That’s so impressive, how did that guy named Tang Zheng do it?" The redhead woman, watching Tang Zheng’s Sin Points surge on her wristwatch, a full five times that of Rogers, was left stunned.
"I heard he became a policeman; this riot in South City might be related to him," said the American, busy abducting female stars and wealthy individuals, who had no time to watch television; otherwise, he wouldn’t be wondering.
"That’s not a bad idea; why didn’t we think of it?" Anna sighed. She used to admire Rogers, thinking he was strong, but compared to Tang Zheng, he seemed pathetic.
The Japanese were also voicing the same complaints at the time, hiding in a building and watching several thugs attack a gold store, itching to try.
"Tang really is amazing," Aihara Chiharu blindly attributed all the credit to Tang Zheng, her face full of admiration, but then a trace of distress crossed her face, "But so many people will get hurt!"
"Stop babbling, let’s go out and grab something," Ota Nobe spat, slinging his rifle on his back. After Asakura Sakura had given the seeds earned by a comrade’s death to Kagawa Shingo, his dissatisfaction grew, feeling the Group Leader was too biased—who wouldn’t want an extra chance to survive?
"Let’s move out, but we can only operate nearby," Asakura Sakura felt a heavy stone pressing on her chest, making it hard to breathe. Facing an enemy like Tang Zheng was something she truly didn’t want to confront.
In the past few days, Tang Zheng had also become quite familiar with the nearby streets. He drove to several luxury goods stores, where thugs causing trouble would naturally pick first.
Sure enough, as Tang Zheng drove past a street corner, he saw the glass window of a branded watch shop 50 meters away had been smashed, and a dozen masked thugs were robbing the place, stuffing expensive watches into backpacks they had prepared in advance.
Tang Zheng floored the gas pedal and charged viciously towards them.
A man with a backpack ran out, his first time committing such a crime, and he was panicked. Suddenly, he heard the thunderous roar of an engine and before he could turn his head to see the direction of the oncoming car, he felt his legs hit by a powerful force. Accompanied by the sound of bones breaking, his body immediately flew through the air, tumbling a long distance on the main street, blood splattering everywhere.
"It’s the police, run!" A hooligan shouted, reluctantly grabbing a handful of watches before he started running, but it was too late.
Tang Zheng reversed the car, then turned the steering wheel and drove over the roadbed, crashing into the watch shop, effectively cornering the looters inside.
Three unlucky thugs didn’t dodge in time and were sent flying.
The thugs weren’t a unified group; a few were obviously hardened criminals and were carrying handguns. Seeing Tang Zheng blocking the way, they immediately drew guns and fired at the police car, trying to intimidate him into retreating to clear a path for escape.
Bang, a bullet pierced through the windshield, leaving a web of cracks, then buried itself in the seat.
Tang Zheng took out his already loaded shotgun, kicked open the car door, rolled out, and simultaneously shot, blowing the head off the armed thug. He then stood his ground, continuing to fire, shooting and breaking the thighs of a few thugs trying to escape from the shop.
They screamed in pain, lying on the street, the areas around their broken legs a gory mess. Their backpacks dropped, scattering watches all over the ground, shining exceptionally bright in the sunlight.
"Don’t kill us, we surrender!" A few quick-witted thugs were terrified by Tang Zheng’s violent actions and promptly raised their hands high. Of course, there were always those who refused to give up without a fight.
A bullet hit Tang Zheng in the chest. The evildoers thought they had killed him and were about to cheer when they were shocked to see the dark barrel of a gun pointed at them.
"Too bad, you didn’t shoot through!" Tang Zheng fired, and the gunman’s right arm was completely blown off, his flesh splattering against the wall.
After this, all the thugs knelt, no longer daring to resist.
"I didn’t bring any officers out with me, and there aren’t enough handcuffs," Tang Zheng muttered in annoyance. He was waiting to earn more Sin Points and couldn’t afford to waste time here, but soon enough, more police cars arrived. His subordinates wouldn’t possibly allow their Director to take risks, all wanting to curry favor and rise through the ranks in the future.
Dantai scattered his gang members, encouraging them to be bold in their actions. If anything happened, a boss would cover for them, so these guys acted like rabid dogs on the loose, stirring up trouble and seizing the opportunity to get rich—an decision that also brought a vast amount of Sin Points to Special Agent Dantai, surpassing Rogers and becoming second.
The efficiency of the City of God police was infuriatingly low; it took a full three hours to suppress the riot. However, the fire police were the most exhausted; fires had broken out in multiple locations in South City and were still spreading.
"The fire is so big, if things go wrong, you as Director might be done for." Pang Meiqin looked at the billowing smoke worriedly. If Tang Zheng were to lose his position, their follow-up plans would be affected.
"Hmph, if it wasn’t done by the Japanese, it was the Americans. Don’t you see? These guys are pretty ruthless. Look at the direction of the fire; isn’t it burning the area around the supermarket?" Tang Zheng grumbled, thinking about how to kill those two groups. The frequency of Miranda’s phone calls had noticeably decreased, and the topics she discussed sidled around questions about the strength and readiness of the Warhammer team, giving him an ominous feeling.
Asakura Sakura and Anna started the fires, and others followed suit. Unfortunately, apart from the first person who took the plunge, the rest only gained a few Sin Points.
By the afternoon, the riots had been completely quelled, and all the major television stations were broadcasting the day’s events; Tang Zheng once again became the target of public condemnation.
Upon returning to the Police Station, Tang Zheng was blocked by a crowd of reporters, with dozens of microphones thrust in front of him, seeking an interview.
"Alright, I’ll say a few words." Tang Zheng cleared his throat; he had been worrying about how to salvage the situation when these folks showed up at his doorstep. He looked towards the camera, "You foolish people, before complaining about the decisions I’ve made, shouldn’t you first take a look at the environment in which you live? A mere protest by prostitutes has brewed such a disaster; have you no introspection?"
"Kind citizens, have you not yet seen? This city has become thoroughly rotten, overgrown with tumors that are gradually eroding our homeland. Citizens, we must act, otherwise, when these tumors erupt, we will all die!"
"Criminals, swindlers, robbers, shameless politicians—these scum and their heinous acts are everywhere. Why do you not dare go out after ten o’clock at night? Why are you so often extorted and blackmailed? Don’t tell me you’re all masochists, deriving pleasure from it?" Tang Zheng asked rhetorically, his tone resounding with conviction, "My aim is to remove these tumors and restore the City of God to its rightful state!"
There was silence at the scene, followed by some scattered applause, which then gathered momentum.
"Please make way, I have a lot of work to do." The reporters parted, allowing Tang Zheng to pass through, their cameras continuous snapping photos.
Citizens, filled with helplessness and anger towards the increasingly corrupt city, burst forth with reaction after seeing Tang Zheng’s speech on television. No one wished to see their homeland desecrated; they needed a firm hand to govern the city.
The mayor’s office and General Police Station’s hotlines were nearly overwhelmed, with citizens demanding that Tang Zheng be granted more power to govern the city.
Tang Zheng, who was originally to be dismissed from his position, not only managed to retain his authority but was also promoted to become Deputy Inspector, officially entering the upper echelon of the police. He now had more than 800 policemen under his command. Of course, he had yet to assimilate, and the higher-ups were waiting for him to slip up. Once the public’s fervor cooled down, they would concoct an excuse to throw him into prison—the framing and entrapment they were quite adept at.
"Prepare yourself, we will begin expanding to the east and west of the city tonight. Our time is tight." Tang Zheng put down his coffee cup and looked at Teng Yuangxiang, who seemed hesitant to speak, "What is it?"
"I want to be a policewoman."
"Me too." Tao Tao raised her hand and bravely interjected.
"They all do." Dantai sighed as Tang Zheng looked to ask the others, "My plan has completely failed. It has no appeal."
"Don’t be sad; weren’t you supposed to arrange for people to follow the American team? How did that go?" Tang Zheng waved his hand dismissively, "Go rest, report to the police station tomorrow."
"It’s those female celebrities they kidnapped, but they’re slick. Several people died before we even got hold of their tail." The television was currently broadcasting a series of kidnapping cases, which the American team had really blown out of proportion.
"Tomorrow, I’ll lead the team into a firefight with them, not only to consume the police but also the survivors." Tang Zheng reflected and decided it was best not to show his face personally, so he made a phone call to the policewomen, instructing his brother to report the Americans’ hideout.
"Director, why don’t you come over to my place tonight?" The policewoman was tearfully grateful and extended the invitation once again.
"No, thanks." Tang Zheng hung up the phone and stood up, straightening his clothes, "Rest for a while, then we’ll go take some territory."
"Having the police go in first, my role as godfather doesn’t feel very accomplished." Dantai said helplessly, leaning back on the sofa.
As the city’s nightlife began, Tang Zheng led the survivors out, heading to the hottest bar in Eastern City, while also making a phone call to the police officers to join them.
Tang Zheng had no intention of letting the nightlife in Eastern City calm down, but just as he stepped into the bar, he was startled to see the old man in the suit sitting at the bar, drinking with a forlorn expression, passing the time.
