Chapter 1057: Chapter 33: Fixing the New Partner
On the third day of entering the City of God, the gloomy sky started to drizzle again. Although Tang Zheng had brutally beaten Bynum last night, leaving him seriously injured and sent to the hospital, his Sin Points did not decrease. It seemed that to the Silver Trojan, Tang Zheng was also a perpetrator, and moreover, he didn’t save anyone at the time.
Standing in front of the South City Police Branch building, gazing at the bustling edifice, Tang Zheng exhaled deeply. He had committed quite a few misdeeds recently: forging his identity, robbing an arms warehouse, coercing a lawyer, staging a suicide, and bribing policemen, which caused his Sin Points to soar. However, the highest were still Dantai’s, as he used various means to build his power, striving to become a gangster godfather.
Tang Zheng walked up the steps, pushed open the glass door, and entered the lobby. He saw policemen busy at work, taking notes from citizens filing reports, interrogating handcuffed thieves. When they saw this new colleague, they slowed their work and sized him up.
Wearing his crisply ironed blue-black police uniform, Tang Zheng, with a broad and imposing figure, walked with a confident and upright gait that exuded a bracing and steely aura. Coupled with his tidy short hair and tightly pursed lips, he exemplified a strong sense of justice.
Seeing Tang Zheng knock and enter the Director’s office, the policemen immediately started whispering among themselves, curious about his background.
"Reporting in, Officer No. 7896, Leon, here to report for duty," Tang Zheng shouted firmly, without a waver in his gaze, trying to make a good impression on the Director. Unfortunately, his efforts were in vain.
"Perform well, and in the future, my position will be open to you young people. Now, go out. You’ll be partnered with Old Joseph; let him show you the ropes of the job you’ll be doing." The Director, slumped over his desk, glanced at Tang Zheng and muttered a token encouragement before sending him away, assigning him a mission. Because of his age, the Director’s health wasn’t great, and since he had eagerly taken dirty money the night before, he had overindulged at the club, leaving him sluggish and dispirited.
Tang Zheng didn’t waste words; he stood at attention, saluted, turned around, and left, closing the office door behind him.
"Excuse me, may I ask, which one is Officer Joseph?" Tang Zheng approached a middle-aged policewoman to inquire about his partner.
"He caught a thief this morning; he’s probably in the Interrogation Room right now," replied the policewoman with a smile, looking up at Tang Zheng, who was two heads taller than her. "And how should I address you?"
"Leon!" That was the name on his fake profile, something Tang Zheng had casually made up.
"I’m sure you’re not familiar with the trivial matters of the police station. Let your big sister show you around, huh? But you have to treat me to lunch." The policewoman was quite enthusiastic, completely ignoring the complainant next to her who was filing a report about a lost wallet. Tang Zheng, however, politely declined.
"I need to find Joseph first, I’ll definitely treat you some other time, you go ahead and keep busy!" Seeing that the policewoman was about to take him to the Interrogation Room, Tang Zheng hurried away; her enthusiasm was a bit too much for him to handle.
The Interrogation Room was on the second floor, but Tang Zheng didn’t rush there; instead, he took the opportunity to survey the entire police station, with a particular focus on the Gun Storage Room and the Prison Cell, which needed to be thoroughly inspected. Five unlucky souls were locked in cages only half a person high, being drenched in the rain in the backyard.
A policeman stood next to them, questioning them. When he didn’t get the answers he wanted, he poked them with a police baton. The space was too small to dodge, so the unlucky ones could only take the hits, and they didn’t dare to scream lest they attract a beating.
Seeing Tang Zheng, the policeman glanced at him and, recognizing a colleague, paid him no further mind.
Tang Zheng turned the door handle to make sure the Interrogation Room door was locked, then knocked on it.
"Wait a minute, I’ll be there," came a rough male voice.
Tang Zheng frowned. With his excellent hearing, he didn’t detect any footsteps, which meant that the person inside had no intention of opening the door. Moreover, as the voice died down, the suppressed moans of a woman suddenly became more urgent. But then they turned into muffled sounds, clearly her mouth had been covered.
"Seems like a scoundrel, much easier to deal with," Tang Zheng leaned against the wall, crossed his arms, and closed his eyes to rest.
"Who are you?" Bang, the door was flung open, and Joseph’s face was covered with displeasure. Halfway through fastening his belt, he glared at Tang Zheng, making no attempt to hide his annoyance.
"I’m your new partner." Tang Zheng was about to offer a handshake, but out of the corner of his eye, he saw a woman sitting on the table in the Interrogation Room and retracted his hand, wondering where this middle-aged officer had touched her.
This woman, heavily made up and exuding a worldly air, threw a flirtatious look towards the doorway, put on her clothes, and walked out gracefully.
She was a prostitute who had stolen from a client and was caught by Old Joseph. Not wanting to be locked up for several months, she had to pay him double the money and also sleep with him once.
"I’m leaving, Officer Joseph," she said, rising on her tiptoes to plant a kiss on Joseph’s face. Then she pulled out a business card and slipped it into Tang Zheng’s pocket, "Handsome, be sure to come to see me, I’ll make sure you’re satisfied."
"A minor case, just a thieving bitch, not worth mentioning," Old Joseph expressed his dissatisfaction with Tang Zheng’s demeanor and turned to leave. After a few steps, he didn’t even look back as he ordered, "By the way, go and wipe down the Interrogation Room table."
Tang Zheng stood motionless.
"Young man, you better do as I say," Old Joseph said with a hostile tone, staring at Tang Zheng. "Every place has its rules, and if you don’t play by them, you’re bound to be kicked out sooner or later."
