Chapter 91: Brink of Extinction
Chapter 91: Brink of Extinction
The three fell silent and did not immediately answer him. Rise was also not in a hurry and had the time to wait.
"It’s actual hell there," Nikolai spoke after a moment of silence. Everyone was aware of what he was talking about.
He fiddled with his fingers as though itching to get a cigarette to smoke. Yvez only held his hand so he would stop. The two held hands like that.
Alphen rolled his eyes, even in such a serious setting, they could still become lovey-dovey.
Rise also glanced and pursed his lips. He was not jealous itself, but just he suddenly missed his Guild Leader.
"I’ve never seen it in person, but just the images are enough. It makes you feel grateful that we haven’t yet reached that point. But at the same time, I’m feeling uncertain for our future."
Nikolai spoke in a rare solemn tone, his doubt was evident in his every word. He sighed heavily and tightened his hold on Yvez’s hand.
"Rise, our impression is also limited, and we can’t say much. This is also not confidential." Nikolai paused and finally continued after a few moments. "This exploration is more dangerous than you think."
His voice was becoming lower, almost like a mumble. "I’m not even sure if many will return alive."
Nikolai was always honest; he was not the type to beat around the bush. Also, he also knew that Rise was not one to run his mouth around, telling people even the situation had grown to this extreme.
Rise did not reply, and so the three fell silent.
Unlike the lively atmosphere of the gathering, where they were was relatively quiet and even heavy. Rise looked at everyone, especially the members of the small or medium-sized guilds, who were happily socializing and earning connections, not knowing the fate they would have to go through later on.
Rise was not one to pity them; every one of them was on the edge of death the moment they awakened as Espers and joined any affiliations to earn using their abilities.
For years, humanity was always on the brink of extinction. It was only a matter of when. The other world seemed to paint this future of humanity for everyone.
As for him... Everything seemed distant. He had his important battle to worry about.
He did not know when humanity would surrender and succumb to their fate. Rise knew one thing though... If he did not do anything, his own fate would end five years from now.
What was the more pressing matter was all clear to see.

Unlike their side, which had one common nation, which was the Federation, the forefront of humanity, the other world had none of it. For some reason, even as they were on the brink of extinction, their civilization had remained to be divided.
Perhaps, there was also a matter of regions and races involved. Right, in the other world, there was not only humanity but other races as well.
Although even humanity was still divided into different factions. For various reasons, they seemed unable to unite even with a common enemy.
"Where should we go, Guild Leader?" Rise raised the question after they entered the gate.
The gate was a special one, and so each team was randomly teleported, and they did not have anyone around them except their party.
What greeted them was a dilapitated house, and seemed to be a ruined city. Everyone was already used to such sight, but in this world, the surroundings feel darker and eerie, as though it had been a while since the sun had lit the entire world.
And so everyone could not help but huddle together, taking time to get used to it.
Kamille’s gray pupils wandered around, and he began to assess the most possible route they should take. It did not need to be the best, but rather it should be beneficial for the team.
It did not take long, and Kamille found the answer. He turned to his party and spoke in a calm tone. "We’ll go west. There should be an opportunity for us there."
And for what was that opportunity, time would only tell. No one rejected his idea, and so the group began their journey to the west.
Although they did not have a scout, Hayes’ ability was also helpful at times. As long as they were in earth surface, he could feel any changes with it.
His ability might not be as overpowered as being master of the earth like Kamille was with the wind, but Hayes could be considered a friend of the earth.
Hayes frowned heavily, his mood low and filled with sorrow.
"The earth beneath us is almost dead," Hayes muttered under his breath, "It’s unstable."
"It’s fine. We don’t really need to talk with it." Rise waved his hand, walking alongside Kamille.
Hayes glared at him. Rise’s words were a bit insensitive, but he was also right. Unlike Hayes, they could not even hear anything that the earth might say.
"Yes, it’s pitiful." Kianna also voiced out. She could not hear the earth itself, but she was able to sense the sorrows of the spirits around him.
She was very sensitive with it.
Hayes sighed, and the group proceeded with their journey. Since it was a world that was almost engulfed by the beings beyond the gate. It was not long before they encountered a group of beasts.
And it was a group of A-rank monsters too.
In an instant, the group entered combat mode.
Rise’s eyes lit up, this gate would never be boring for him. Not only was it a gate special to his heart, it also provided him the thrill he needed.
The fight he wanted.
Kamille did not command anything, but as soon as his wind surrounded him and he pulled out his sword, the party also followed suit and took all their weapons or ready their abilities.
Rise swept his eyes around; he smiled with satisfaction.
This was very different from the subjugation team of over a month ago, where the Espers seemed to depend on Kamille too much; in this group, everyone was chosen but Kamille himself, thus their abilities were guaranteed.
With roars of the beasts becoming apparent were also the mark of the temporary party fighting together for the first time.
