Chapter 88: Gathering (4)
Kamille and Rise were facing so close to each other. Anyone with an imaginative mind would be able to speculate something based on their position alone.
However, as everyone was elite and Kamille was someone with a respectable reputation, the newcomers did not think too much. They were also the most arrogant guild; they always thought gossiping about others was beneath them.
Rise blinked and met Mitchell’s gaze, the other instantly meeting his. Kamille’s arms were still around Rise by this time, which only tightened, drawing him closer.
"Rise." Mitchell stepped out of the elevator, followed by his guild members. His greeting was unlike the usual, where he often called Rise with a playful endearment such as darling, dear, or sweetheart.
He looked rather solemn too, especially as his gaze landed on Kamille’s arm around Rise.
What’s up with this dude? Did he really take it too seriously when Rise suddenly entered a guild when he was adamant about not joining one?
Rise glanced at the members behind him, and decided not to act too familiar with him too much. This was a public setting, and he still respected Mitchell’s current status.
"Guild Leader Mitchell." This was not Rise but Kamille who spoke first and greeted the other despite Mitchell calling Rise’s name first and not greeting him.
Feeling bewildered by the sudden shift in the atmosphere, the members behind Mitchell remained silent, even forgetting to greet Kamille respectfully.
Mitchell averted his gaze from Rise and looked at Kamille. The two men stared at each other, as though assessing one another.
A crease formed between Rise’s brows, feeling puzzled as to why these two seemed too hostile with each other. Sure, their last encounter was not too pleasant, so it seemed understandable to a certain extent.
"Guild Leader Mitchell," Rise was the one who called this time. He felt like it was necessary to intervene.
The tension might escalate if he just let it be! Kamille’s temper was always calm, but that could not be certain for Mitchell.
Their gazes instantly landed on him after he called for Mitchell.
One with a dull look while the other carried a bit of anticipation for some reason.
Rise smiled, his hand patted Kamille’s back before continuing with his words. "That way is the venue, please head on your way, Guild Leader Mitchell."
In other words, he was saying he should leave. Rise was not making it too direct out of respect for his position, but Mitchell surely understood what he was implying.
Mitchell’s pupils seemed to tremble slightly, his hands behind his back clenched.
Still, he forced a smile and stepped forward slightly until he was an arm’s length from the two.
"You look a bit different," Mitchell spoke softly, during this time he did not look at Kamille at all, only focusing on Rise.
Rise’s brows raised, "What’s the difference?"
He did not think he actually looked that much different.
Mitchell chuckled and saw his confusion giving a cryptic smile, even though it did not reach his eyes. He did not answer, and his gaze finally shifted and he met Kamille’s deep gaze.
His smile faded slightly. Yet, he did not say much else. He nodded at Kamille, who looked indifferent, which he did not mind.
"Let’s see each other around," Mitchell waved gently at Rise before he left with his members entering the venue.
For a moment, Rise could not help but watch their back. He had only become distracted when Kamille shifted his chin and made Rise look at him.
"What are you looking at?" Kamille narrowed his eyes, which made Rise blink.
These two... Rise was really thinking something was odd between them.
"I’m just weirded out," Rise responded honestly, his arm wrapping around Kamille, embracing the other.
With this action, the dark shades around Kamille’s expression softened slightly.
"Why?"
"About Mitchell..." Kamille frowned again, but did not interrupt, listening. And so Rise continued, he also began to explain their relationship. "I’ve known Mitchell since I was young, we’re from the same orphanage."
Come to think of it, Rise had never told this before to Kamille in the past. Since, Kamille seemed not to care and Rise did not think it was necessary.
"Mitchell’s two years older, and he often claimed of himself as my older brother." Rise rolled his eyes as he recalled this. "Even to this day, he always wanted to recruit me to his guild. He seemed to still think of him as my older brother, so he has this kind of responsibility to take care of me."
Rise was always bullied when he was young, he was always called slurs such as dirty orphan or a kid born from waste and shits. Rise was a quiet kid; the bullies often thought because he was timid or scared so he was not responding to their provocations and only became energetic.
However, Rise simply did not care to respond; his condition had also not recovered then, and so he was always in a daze. So, Rise had never heard of or paid attention to those kids.
"Mitchell is the one who helps me the most." Rise sneered slightly, but it was obvious that he was smiling genuinely. "He’s a dumb kid with a hero complex. Mitchell always thought I needed his help and treated me as a fragile kid. Even when both of us awakened as an Epser at an early age, he still acted as my protector."
Kamille’s expression changed slightly, becoming unreadable, his gaze never leaving Rise’s face while he was telling the story of his childhood with Mitchell.
Rise really thought that Mitchell being hostile now with Kamille and even before in the past was because of this reason other than his ego when he was defeated by Kamille in recruiting Rise.
"Guild Leader," Rise called, soft and a bit coquettish. "Just don’t mind that fool, he’s hopeless. I never even acknowledged and called him an older brother once."
Rise breathed, "So, don’t fight with him."
Mitchell was indeed a fool, but Rise, deep inside his heart, he actually thought of him as his best friend. He did not want him to clash with Kamille, who was someone important in his heart.
