Chapter 57: Unrecorded (3)
[Because of you.] This time, it was an aged and wilting voice who spoke. [I returned because of you.]
Huh? Rise could understand the words, but he could not comprehend them. What did it mean that because of him he returned?
Seriously, he did not even know how he returned himself, so how could he help others return as well? With a skeptical look, he questioned, "What do you mean because of me?"
Gradually, he seemed to think of an idea. Did his return trigger something—more than the change and the butterfly effect he might cause, it also created this kind of anomaly?
[I don’t know.]
The voice seemed to have an amnesia relapse with its ’I don’t know’. Rise’s brow instantly furrowed. He had this type of urgency, as he knew this flesh would not be able to communicate for long.
Just as he was about to say more, the aged voice suddenly blurted out as though remembered it at the last moment.
[You can ask the person with you.]
Eh? Rise, stunned by these words, could not help but turn and look at his Guild Leader. Ask Kamille?
Kamille, crossing his arms, continued to watch him. His gaze offered an inquiry when Rise glanced at him.
What should he ask him, though? For sure, even Kamille did not know what it was! However, perhaps, the True Sight? That was a miraculous ability, after all.
Even without combat ability, it is sometimes more valuable than an S-rank ability.
"What should I ask him?"
[I don’t know]
Again, the voice completely became amnesiac. Rise also did not hope to gain any more information. Clearly, saying those cryptic words has already spent a lot of its vitality.
Forbidden knowledge was as such, which Rise also anticipated.
"Guild Leader," Rise called and removed his hand from the flesh. "What should we do with this?"
As always, Rise was more reliant on Kamille whenever they were inside the gate. Aside from some decisions on the battlefield, he would only listen to what to do.
"Are you done talking with it?"
Kamille did not sound probing at all but just merely asking; still, Rise hesitated as he was not really in a position to actually reveal everything or anything at the moment.
Not to mention that he barely receives valuable information from it.
Rise was always cautious, afraid that he, like the flesh, would need a price to reveal anything. Not that he was scared for the vitality being spent, but what if, it was a different price for him?
"I think so?" Rise touched the back of his neck and chuckled, "It never answers my answers, anyway."
In a way, it was true. Other than confirming the existence of the author and the valuable experience of this encounter, Rise did not gain much.
He cleared his throat before asking again. "How can we... break this?"
As a gate node, they needed to break or, in this case, kill it for the gate to be cleared. However, Rise was a bit conflicted and unwilling to do this.
This was someone who knew something, and for some reason, he had this sense of camaraderie even though he never knew what story the owner of this flesh was.
Kamille seemed to sense his hesitation. "You don’t want to kill it." This was not a question but a statement.
Rise also did not hide and nodded.
"I don’t pity it, but... It’s just interesting to see a different gate node." This statement had some truths to it.
"We don’t have to." Kamille again lifted his head and looked at the overall form, which obviously shrank by a considerable amount. "It will die soon."
It was as though... It only persisted to this day.
The state of this gate also demonstrated this. For more A-rank gates, no matter how high it was, if it was not maintained, the resources would eventually thin out.
This gate could exist to this day only because of this node’s persistence to exist.
In other words, this gate had long been cleared. And probably, it was not connected to the other side anymore. This massive flesh, clearly, took over this gate and became its node.
For the reason Kamille did not know.
Rise was also aware of this; while saddened, he fully accepted it. Such was fate, although he hated that word.
"Then..." Rise remembered something. "How can we leave, Guild Leader?"
Rise momentarily forgot the depressive and shocking event brought by encountering this massive flesh but recalled the traumatic deep lake.
"Did we need to..." Rise gulped, unwilling. "...to swim there again?"
Was it worth it to go through that again? Meeting this flesh was quite a surprise and proved to be worth the journey, but... Rise did not want to swim there again and arrive at that muddy swamp.
Kamille could hear his thoughts just by his expression alone, making him let out a low chuckle.
He did not answer the distressed Rise and went to touch the flesh again.
It was Rise’s turn to watch Kamille have a conversation with the massive flesh. He was not even afraid if the massive flesh suddenly exposed him to Kamille.
Rise would even feel thankful! Things he had yet to test, it was fine if the massive flesh bore the price on his behalf.
Curious, Rise resisted the urge to listen to the conversation by touching the massive flesh. Although he was not sure if he could hear them even if he did so.
Unlike him, Kamille did not spend a long time talking with the flesh. He soon removed his hand.
Without looking at Rise, Kamille already knew what he wanted to ask the most.
As expected, Rise naturally clung to his arm once more, waiting.
"It said, it created a new path for us."
As the master of this gate, it could do such a simple thing.
Rise sighed in obvious relief. He had never been this stressed inside the gate before. And in a gate, which he never fought once! This gate was truly such an eye-opener to him.
Not everything would go as he planned. This was obvious and Rise anticipated, but it only showed him the consequence.
Rise had learned a lesson today. For his future plans, he might have to become more cautious in his approach.
Not too cautious though, any chaos... was his friend. Since, not following the rules did not mean being reckless as well.
