Chapter 41: The Healer

Parties had always the accustomed teams when raiding gates, as no matter how powerful one was, they would still be unable to really solo a gate.

Not only would it be exhausting, but it was also not cost-effective and unnecessary. Unless it was an S-rank soloing a low-rank gate but who among the S-ranks would do that?

In the Union, Rise did not have teams or parties, he was always a temporary member. Only when he joined the Guild did he really have a permanent party. For a few years, he also experienced a lot with them.

And so, aside from Kamille, Rise really admitted the members were really those he also likes and is happy to be with.

Mirabelle, was also among these people. Rise was shameless to the core and did not hide how he stared deeply at Mira with a smile on his lips.

Mira bit her lips, not daring to meet his gaze. Those who noticed what was happening at this table were also a bit curious but did not have any courage to inquire what was going on either.

If it was not Rise who was smiling at staring at some girl like that, they might already suspect that he was hitting on Mirabelle. It was only that, no one actually had the thought to assess Rise’s actions as the same as normal people.

"Uhm... We know who you are." The other woman beside Mirabelle finally decided to respond, since Mira was very timid and would not take the initiative to do so.

They did not want to offend Rise!

Rise’s gaze shifted slightly to the side, and he looked at the other girl; like Mirabelle, she also looked ordinary. She was unfamiliar to him, though.

He nodded, showing his understanding.

"Well, that’s not a surprise." Rise cut the cake with the fork and took a bite. His demeanor relaxed, devoid of any arrogance. Even so, he was Rise; anyone who had heard of him would not be comfortable being at the same table as him.

Returning his gaze to them, he spoke, "How about introducing yourself too?" He tried to sound friendly, but he had not tried hard enough for it. He did not know that such calmness, was precisely frightened the girls.

Rise’s temperament had become mild since he returned, since it was already influenced by his self of five years later, unlike the younger him, which was pretty much synonymous with a villain himself that everyone currently knew.

Another thing was, that he was also dealing with Mirabelle and had subconsciously lowered his guard.

In the party, Mirabelle was really a gentle soul. She was timid and like a frightened rabbit, yet more often than not, she would become a mediator when the members were quarreling. Which, Rise and Hayes were frequently the main characters.

This might be attributed to her ability, she was a water ability user. A rare one that was purely as a support healer.

The women flinch, then look at each other before nodding. They really looked like being reprimanded by a professor for how they acted, amusing Rise.

He looked at them as he waited and continued eating his snacks.

"Uh, I’m Nana. A... C-rank esper." Rise did not know if saying one’s rank was a standard way of introducing oneself. Maybe? Well, he never did that.

In fact, it was not really the case. However, they were already frightened by Rise and might already say their age and birthday like one would when introducing in class.

His gaze landed on Mira, who happened to meet his gaze; like a terrified rabbit, she quickly averted her gaze.

"I... I’m Mirabelle. Uh, nice to meet you." She even bowed slightly; whether it was respect or just because she was afraid, it did not matter to Rise.

His smile widened, and Rise almost pinched her cheeks. She was just cute!

As the youngest of the party, all of the members, Rise included, somehow awakened a responsibility to protect her. She was also their healer, and had saved them through a lot of situations as well.

For them, Mira was indeed precious.

If he recalled, during this time, Mira was barely 18 years old, indeed so young. When they met a year later, she did not have changes other than a slight increase in height.

Then, as if she had forgotten something, she continued with a much lower voice. "Uh... I’m a C-rank esper."

She seemed to forget to copy her friend, afraid to be reprimanded by the "professor" before her.

A C-rank Esper, huh... Rise’s eyes flickered slightly. His expression did not change much. He only nodded and tried to dispose of the heavy and awkward atmosphere.

His bad reputation would not be easily forgotten, nor had Rise any intention to change, but he did not want to frighten this little rabbit even more.

"Don’t be so afraid. Just eat comfortably, do I look that scary?" Rise playfully inquired, touching his chin and making his face more prominent.

Truthfully, with a gentle appearance and if he was not acting overbearing, Rise could fool anyone and be seen as an innocent, handsome young man.

The two women finally looked at him—not yet eye-to-eye, but it was an improvement. Their cheeks flushed slightly.

As young women, they were not immune to good looks yet; in fact, when they stopped being immune to it anyway.

Rise chuckled at them, resisting to pinch Mira’s chubby cheeks.

"Go on, just eat. Young people should eat more to grow fast." Rise forgot, he himself was only 22 and still had room to grow.

The two women seemed to sense that Rise really did not intend to bully them, just as those rumors say, and finally relaxed. Maybe, those rumors are just rumors?

Thinking of this, they quickly became relieved and ate more comfortably. Even though they were still not as outgoing as they were before Rise sat at their table.

While smiling and talking about this and that to the two, he thought of Mira’s current rank.

So, it seemed her ability had yet to be discovered at this time. Mirabelle was a water ability user, but her ability offered little to no offensive qualities. And so, she was only a C-rank Esper.

In truth, Mira’s water ability in terms of offensive value was indeed C-rank, but it was not her expertise at all. She was a special water healing ability user.

Mira’s ability would then be discovered by Kamille, and after testing again, she was among the rare few who had changed their rank. Mirabelle went from being a C-rank Esper to being an A-rank Esper, gaining envy from everyone and changing her destiny.
