Chapter 108: First Glimpse (4)
The moment that he spoke, the air seemed to shift slightly, but it only roamed around before vanishing. This was enough to startle Zenos. "What was that?"
Zarilan smiled and squinted his eyes dangerously. He swept his gaze to the two, ignoring his son and not bothering to explain clearly.
Kamille did not ask, and so did Rise.
Rise was not even surprised when he heard this, but honestly, he was still a bit shaken inside.
What did they know? Rise contemplated while growing more anxious. He wanted to know if the information these people knew was enough to ruin his plans.
He did not trust them at all.
Tsk. He bit the inside of his tongue, annoyed. What the fuck was going on? Why was it that when he returned then all of this anomaly was happening? Whose arrangements were all of this?
He thought of the one that let him return to the past. What the hell were they planning? Everything was a freaking mess. Rise hated that the straightforward plan he had was slowly being affected because of these unexpected events.
On the way to wherever the destination was, Rise remained silent, his mood was obviously not good.
Fortunately, it did not take hours for them to arrive.
Their footsteps ceased as soon as Zarilan stopped. Rise with his arms crossed, looking around. He was still frowning, devoid of any playful smile he usually wore.
"Is this the place?"Rise, raise a brow, clearly not pleased. "There’s nothing here."
That was right. There was only darkness. Not even a shed of light, and everyone only relied on their advanced senses to look at their surroundings.
"Indeed, we’ve already arrived." Zarilan solemnly replied, as he made eye contact with Rise. He then also looked at the elders, who also nodded.
Soon, every one from his side moved aside from Zenos.
Rise was already alert and subconsciously moved closer to Kamille, who was then also observing the scene with his deep gaze. The moment that they made any threatening movements, he would immediately attack.
Yet, none of that happened.
Zarilan and each elder only activated something as the air slowly shifted, the gloomy atmosphere instantly rose. Rise stunned, looked down, and saw a huge magic circle had suddenly appeared under their feet.
The surroundings were immediately lit up as soon as the magic circle appeared.
"What are you going to do?" Rise could not help but shout, his tone had a hint of panic.
Usually, Rise was calm even in unexpected and critical scenarios, but now, he could not do that. He was very sensitive to anything related to magic circles. His pupils dilated, as his hands trembled.
Visions started to appear, making him almost lose his mind.
Kamille also noticed this; his expression became dark in an instant. The wind instantly shifted and became chaotic, more than the anomaly that the magic circle caused.
His arm wrapped around Rise as he pulled him closer to his chest securely, nearly embracing him tightly. Rise also did not resist and leaned comfortably in his hold while trembling noticeably.
Kamille’s jaw tightened, a crimson hue slowly tinting the corners of his eyes. He looked up at Zarilan, his gaze cold.
"Explain what’s going on." His tone was chilling, suppressing the emotions as much as he could.
He was aware that the moment his other side appeared, it would over. Kamille had the inkling that Zarilan was not truly doing something with malicious intent; if not, his ability would immediately alert him of the danger.
However, it was also true that the moment the magic circle appeared, Rise began acting like this. Kamille was panicking inside; he had never seen Rise trembling or even scared since the moment he met him.
Zarilan almost choked as pressure began to press down on him. He gritted his teeth and remained standing where he stood, like he was nailed shut in his position.
He swallowed the blood that formed in his throat, and with a bitter smile, he shook his head. How did he know something like this would happen? Zarilan was also startled as Rise suddenly paled and shivered as if scared when the magic circle lit up.
"Answer me," Kamille growled, his once-gray pupils were gradually tainting with a crimson hue. He could feel Rise’s consciousness slipping from his hold.
Kamille saw Rise’s fragile side, but most of the time it was only Rise’s acting. Now that it was truly happening, this was not just acting; Kamille’s mind was also blanking out.
He did not have any clue of what was happening or even what to do, and he could only vent out these emotions to Zarilan, the one who made Rise like this in the first place.
"Fa-Father..." The other clueless one, Zenos, called for his father. The older Lionheart’s face was as white as a sheet, and his body also trembled as if at any moment he might collapse.
He looked around and saw that the others were also in the same state. What the hell was going on? His gaze also landed on the two outsiders. The once-confident silver-haired man, Rise, leaned softly to Kamille, his guild leader, who was about to lose his mind as well.
Zarilan closed his eyes for a moment and breathed.
"Just a moment... please." The last word was spoken so low, almost begging or even desperate. Beads of sweat began to appear on his forehead as they tricked down his cheeks.
The other elders also persisted, even with how much their mana was being drained from activating this magic circle, and now another issue arises.
What was worse, it was from the important person they had been waiting for.
"It will be over soon," Zarilan gritted his teeth just to let out those words. The pain running course through his veins, the feeling of his mana being pulled out from the roots deepest inside of him were apparent.
It was truly painful—no, it was tormenting. He lifted his gaze and met those dangerous gazes head-on. His eyes were also bloodshot, but they were quite different from Kamille’s sinister crimson hues.
He did not conceal his desperation through his gaze, and not only Zenos but also Kamille were stunned. His brows were still furrowed, and the crimson hues around his pupils did not fade, but the pressure pressing on Zarilan retracted slightly.
Zarilan sighed heavily once more, becoming breathless as his expression twisted from the painful experience.
Some of the elders were already groaning, but none of them stopped supplying mana to the magic circle, while some with a weaker constitution were already bleeding from their noses.
This was insane, Zenos muttered in disbelief. What was it that made everyone, the father and elders he respected not give up? What are they aiming for?
Zarilan arched his neck for a moment as he closed his eyes. The pain was unbearable, especially so as he was at the center of the magic circle, the more burden was on him.
However, he would not give up.
He turned his head to Kamille and then to Rise, who was now totally in a daze. His eyes were open, but he was not blinking at all. His body was also limp, and only Kamille was supporting him, embracing him tightly.
Clenching his fist, Zarilan stared at Rise, determination like no other filled his body. His body was getting numbed, but his emotions were as sensitive as they had always been.
"We had no other way out." Zarilan clenched his teeth; the despair that had accumulated over time was fully displayed.
Each and everyone here, the reason they were fighting the pain and even risking their lives, was only for this one glimpse of hope. They were all risking everything they had for this one last attempt to survive.
They were already in a hopeless struggle; everyone was aware that the doom of this world was already inevitable; it was only a matter of when.
They had been in the struggle with the nobles for over a thousand years, they had reached their end, and the last rope was about to be cut off no matter how they struggled to put them together.
"This is our only hope," Zarilan spoke in such a bitter tone filled with tormenting pain.
That was right. This was their only hope.
Rise held that glimpse of hope in his hands.
If Rise were to hear these thoughts, he might laugh out loud; he did not mind becoming insensitive to the hopeless situation of others.
Him? Held the hope of the whole world? Rise was even capable of destroying the world, and suddenly he was the savior or something like that?
This was extremely absurd.
He was a villain, okay? He was no hero, and he wanted it to remain that way.
However, it seemed the situation, or whoever was the one that let him return was truly playing with him in a way that just pissed him off to the core.
Like, what the hell was this?
After he sort of passed out when he was scared stiff by the damn magic circle, visions or whatever began to appear as he felt his soul was pulled out, or at least that was what he felt.
And now, as he looked around, he wanted to curse a million times if he could.
Rise just found himself in a place where he first opened his eyes after his death.
That was right, that place of pure darkness, and there at the center, or at least for him, was a ball of light.
Of course, he knew what it was.
It was the goddamn book.
