Chapter 88: Something To Remember Me By
Honestly?
Felix didn’t know. He had absolutely no idea what to think. Agreeing to Kade’s suggestion felt like getting out of one trap, only to fall right into the next. But if he were to compare the two options...
"We would have to take a long break," he eventually said.
"I know," Kade nodded his head.
"A very long break."
"I... understand."
"And even then... I can’t make any promises. Without the fated bond, I might not be attracted to you at all." Fat chance, but at least Felix’s words sounded confident.
"I am aware," Kade nodded his head once again, undisturbed. "I am asking you for a chance to court you, not for you to promise to date me."
Felix bit on his lip, eyeing the Alpha suspiciously. Was it really that easy? Was Kade willing to take a step back? Of course, that was only supposed to be temporary, and once he returned, he would bother Felix again...
That is, IF he would return.
"We would first have to separate for..." Felix paused, pondering over it for a moment. What period of time should he ask for? It should be long enough not only for all the remaining emotions to dissipate, but also to give Kade enough time to find his second chance mate... But the Alpha was unlikely to agree to separate for too long. In this case, Felix should propose...
"Five years."
As expected, Kade shook his head. "That’s too long. Let’s make it one year."
"...Four years."
"Two."
"Okay!" Felix agreed. The corners of Kade’s lips lifted slightly in amusement, as he realized that this was exactly what the Omega was aiming for, but he didn’t try to argue anymore. He just said,
"We can take a break for two years, but only if we can still remain in touch."
"...Hmm." Felix pressed his lips, hesitating. "But if we stay in touch, it might be harder for the feelings we currently have to disappear..."
"That’s only for our genuine feelings. Those that come from the bond will surely vanish, as we will no longer be affected by its pull!"
...Kade had a point. Without the bond, if Felix ever missed the Alpha, or was happy to talk to him on the phone, or if his heart ever skipped a beat because of him... Then that would be because the man had somehow wormed his way into his heart.
Which would still be problematic, but at least better than their current situation, no?
In the end, after careful consideration, Felix let out a heavy sigh. "Fine. We can stay in touch... But it’d be best not to meet in person. At least for a year!" he quickly said, before Kade could protest. "That’s non-negotiable. And, on top of that... I would like you to take the guards back."
"But... they’re here for your safety. To help you if you’re in trouble..." Kade tried to argue, but Felix shook his head, relentless.
"No. Even if it’s for my sake, with them here, I would still feel as if you’re treating me as your mate."
Although Kade was still unwilling, he had no choice but to let it go. "Fine. We will all leave Silverfall tomorrow."
"Good. Then, about all the things that you gave me..."
"Just keep them. They were gifts, I bought them for you purely because I wanted to, and I don’t expect anything in return."
"But the baby things Fen bought..."
"They were paid for with my card," Kade said, revealing what Felix had already suspected. "So, don’t worry about it. If you really want to pay me back... Then use them well."
That was hardly a way to ’pay back’, as far as Felix was concerned... But he’d be lying if he said he didn’t want to keep those gifts, especially the baby things, so he decided to just accept that.
"I guess that should be it, then. Should we get it over with?"
"..Alright." Kade closed his eyes, taking a deep breath, before meeting Felix’s gaze again. His dark purple eyes contained so many conflicted emotions, as he slowly spoke, "I, Kade Blackstone from the Bloodmoon Pack... reject you, Felix Embermane... as my mate."
"Ugh!" Felix couldn’t help but groan, grasping onto his chest, as a sharp pang of pain passed through his body. His chest was squeezed so tight that he could hardly breathe, and it was only with a lot of effort that he managed to utter in short, shallow gasps, "I... accept... your... rejec... tion."
It was as if a rope that was holding him suddenly snapped, and Felix stumbled, his legs devoid of any strength. He would have fallen down, if it wasn’t for Kade catching him in his arms.
"Hey, are you alright?"
"Ye... yeah..." Felix muttered, nodding weakly, but still unable to stand on his own.
So that was how breaking the bond felt. It wasn’t AS bad as Felix had feared... But it was painful indeed.
It took him a good few minutes to recover enough so that he could breathe right again. "Thank you," he said, pushing Kade away...
But the Alpha only embraced him tighter, his strong arm wrapped around Felix’s slender waist.
"Since I will be leaving you know, I would like to give you something to remember me by," he said. "Is that okay?"
"Something to remember you by?"
"Mn." Kade lifted Felix’s chin up, meeting his gaze. He waited for a moment, and seeing as the Omega didn’t try to push him away... He lowered his head, capturing Felix’s lips.
The kiss tasted like rain. Kade’s lips, although cool at first, quickly warmed up as he pressed them tightly against Felix’s, going even as far as slipping his tongue in to entangle it with the Omega’s in a passionate dance. He pulled Felix closer, pressing him against his soaked chest, making Felix’s clothes all wet... The alluring scent of sandalwood wafted in the air around them, mixing with Felix’s own milk chocolate pheromones, which he didn’t even know when he started releasing...
And just as Felix’s knees turned weak again, and he almost surrendered himself, Kade pulled back.
"Well, that was most certainly worth the wait," he grinned, licking his lips as he stared down at Felix’s flushed cheeks and hazy eyes. He was tempted to devour the Omega whole, right then and there... But he let go.
"I’ll be back!" he just announced, and jumped off the porch, getting into his car and driving away.
Leaving Felix alone by the door, still in a daze, following the car with his eyes until it disappeared.
