I Want to Die, But I Am Immortal
Chapter 66: Friends

Chapter 66: Friends

In a sea of chaos, it was a safe haven, a bubble of normalcy. He thought to himself, This is my paradise. The only location where I am not in actual danger.

His brief respite came to an end when the last bell rang its shrill cry, marking the end of the school day. The bubble was going to pop. Outside the school gates, he faced the dangers and uncertainties of the real world.

With their backpacks hanging over their shoulders, Joseph and Eric approached his desk. Joseph’s voice was urgent as he said, "Adam, you must accompany me.In the next town, I have a very important task to complete. I can not go by myself."

Adam was totally unprepared for the request. He had intended to head straight to the teachers’ office to confront James and find out what new trick his cunning teacher had set up. It was a huge departure from his plan to go to another town. He could not afford the risk of an unknown variable.

"No," he said right away in a firm voice. "I decline. I am unable to accompany you with anyone at this time."

Joseph’s expression dimmed. He made a begging motion with his hands clasped together. "Please, man," he pleaded. "Just ignore her for today, even though I know you have a girlfriend now. This is very significant. And the only person who can assist me is you."

Adam was taken aback by his friend’s despair. Why would Joseph beg him in this way, and what could be so important? And why specifically did he need Adam’s assistance? His mind raised a hundred red flags. He was the target. Anyone with him might also become a target. He could not risk that to Joseph.

"No," he repeated, his tone even more adamant.

Now, though, Eric jumped in. "You must leave, Adam." he said. "I’m going with him too. So what are you worried about? It will be the three of us."

Adam declined once more. However, they persisted. They would not accept refusal. They argued, pleaded, and persuaded. Adam refused to back down. It was too risky, he knew. He was aware that he needed to continue on his own. However, their unrelenting efforts was wearing him down.

He finally sighed in frustration. "All right," he said. "I will see you shortly." He believed he could meet them after handling that matter in James’s office.

However, Joseph’s grip on his arm was surprisingly firm. "No," he said, his eyes wide with a desperate urgency.

"We must leave immediately. I have no time. The entire event will be ruined if I am late. You are aware of the state of affairs in my family."

It touched a nerve to bring up Joseph’s family situation. Adam was aware of their financial difficulties. Since he was fifteen, Joseph had been working part-time jobs to supplement his income.

There was genuine desperation in his friend’s voice. This was no ordinary request. The future of his family might be impacted by this significant event. Adam gazed into his friend’s beseeching eyes.

He saw the sincere concern on his face. He started to lose his resolve against his better judgment. He served as a guard. Additionally, his friend requested his protection.

"All right," he said, finally caving in. "I’ll go with you."

Sophia was packing her bag across the classroom. She had listened to the whole conversation. She had intended to wait for Adam to accompany him to his meeting with James.

No matter how much he objected, she had even intended to invite him back to her home. She was aware of his danger. She desired to support him.

Now, however, he and his friends were heading somewhere else. She felt a hint of sadness, but she ignored it. She was simply relieved that he was with people he could trust.

She made the decision to go home by herself. She gave Adam a final anxious look before leaving the classroom, slinging her backpack over her shoulder. All she could hope for was his safety.

All she could do was hope his friends would look after him. They were the ones guiding him into the trap, but she had no way of knowing that.

Joseph held Adam’s arm tightly. Adam protested, but he and Eric were so urgent that they half-dragged him out of the classroom. Adam swore to himself.

His thoughts cursed at himself. No. Have you forgotten Sophia’s fate yet? This was a mistake, he knew. All of his instincts told him to back off and run the other way.

His voice was firm as he attempted to decline once more. However, they were not paying attention. They were two friends on a mission, completely focused on whatever strange task lay ahead, oblivious to his warnings.

He ended up on a train. He could feel but not see the impending doom as the wheels hit continually on the tracks. With his baseball cap pulled down over his eyes, he sat slouched in his chair.

He made an effort to blend in with the background. Eric and Joseph were talking excitedly about something next to him. In his ears, their voices were a meaningless buzz.

He moved away from them, putting some physical separation between them. He was attempting to convey a sense of disassociation. He did not wish to be seen with them.
