I Want to Die, But I Am Immortal
Chapter 65: School 2

Chapter 65: School 2

James said, "Please take your seats," in a kind and upbeat tone. "Homeroom is about to start."

Adam gave him a look. A wave of icy anger swept over him. He desired to rise. He desired to end his life there, walking to the front of the class.

He wanted to hold him accountable for his deception and the many deaths he had brought about. However, he controlled his feelings. He inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly. The plan was not to kill James here now. It was too messy for the public. He must have been more intelligent than that.

Joseph went back to his desk. "I don’t know where Philips is" he said shrugging. "I haven’t seen him all morning. It’s not like him to be absent. Something must be wrong."

Adam nodded slowly. He had a feeling he knew what was wrong. Philips was scared. He was hiding.

Adam needs to speak with him in order to explain his condition, even though he is aware of the reason for his absence from school.

With a playful twinkle in his eye, Eric leaned over his desk. He whispered, "You must tell us everything about your new girlfriend at lunch." "I would really like to know what you have been doing." After giving a wink, he returned to his desk.

Adam watched him leave. He glanced at Joseph and Eric. His only link to a regular life was his friendship with them. The storm raging around him went unnoticed by them.

He had a strong desire to protect. He refused to let them be touched by his darkness. In his war, he would not allow them to be collateral damage.

James started the class. He discussed significant dates, conflicts, and long-dead monarchs. However, his gaze continued to stray to Adam. He was keeping a careful eye on him.

Adam could feel his eyes pressing down on him. He understood James’s intense attention to him. He was an unresolved issue that required attention.

Adam gave him a cold, vacant look in return. The hypocrisy of it all occurred to him. This teacher’s job was to protect and mentor his students.

However, he was prepared to murder one of them in exchange for a small sum of cash. He was a monster lurking in plain sight, a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

The lesson went on and on. The period came to an end when the bell finally rang. After gathering his books, James made his way out of the classroom. He stopped as he got to the door. He turned back to Adam. He spoke louder for the entire class to hear. "After school, Adam, I need to meet you in the teachers’ office."

It was a summons. An order. An invitation to fall into a trap. Adam simply gazed at him, his face a blank mask. He did not give a nod. He remained silent. He did nothing but watch James turn and leave the room.

Joseph approached his desk. He questioned, "What is up with that?....James’s favorite student right now is you."

Adam remained silent. He glanced at Joseph while he worked on another enigma. "Mia is not here today either," he said in a casual tone. Joseph’s younger sister, Mia, was a girl in a lower grade.

For a moment, Joseph’s happy face wavered. His face flashed something like shock. It vanished after a brief appearance and was replaced by a habitual lack of concern.

He shrugged a bit too casually and said, "I do not know." She shut herself in her chamber. claimed to be too exhausted. Most likely, she is simply sleeping in. He made an effort to sound credible.

Adam, however, saw the lie. His eyes darted away from the slight tension in his shoulders, and he could see the subtle clues. There was a problem. Joseph was also concealing it. One more mystery. Another thread to pull in his cursed life’s ever-widening tapestry.

---

Joseph’s younger sister was named Mia. But to Adam, she was more than that. One of his few real friends was her. She was one of the few girls with whom he could have a conversation without the discomfort that plagued most of his social comes across.

She was a part of his uncertain barely connect to a normal life. She had vanished as well. Another aspect of his world that had mysteriously disappeared from the board. The uneasiness that had been building inside him all day grew stronger.

The remainder of the school day was a blur of routine. Adam was a ghost in the machine as he sat through his classes. He listened to lectures and took notes, but his thoughts were elsewhere.

He was examining the data he had collected from the killers. He was reliving the morning’s events in order to find any errors or vulnerabilities he could take advantage of. The Byrd and the wealthy family who wanted him dead were on his mind.

The school day was a strange kind of calm despite the chaos in his head. He was able to lower his guard a bit for the first time in what seemed like an eternity.

He was free from the constant fear of assassins for hours. He did not have to look over his shoulder all the time. A temporary barrier was created by the packed hallways, the teachers’ vigilant gaze, and the ongoing presence of other students.
