Chapter 36: Fighting the Ember Dragon [1]
Chapter 36: Fighting the Ember Dragon [1]
The massive wings of the dragon flapped and flapped. It soared up to the skies in a brisk, yet majestic manner. Rhett inhaled and nodded his head forward, anticipating the next move of the dragon.
Suddenly the dragon was coming down, towards the direction of Rhett.
’I will not fear, fear is the mind killer, fear deprives you of your determination’, he mumbled.
The knights voices now tore into the air:
"Watch out!".
Rhett dived sideways, to his right, rolling out of the fall he ought to have taken part in to stand up and run a bit from the spot of the descending beast.
The dragon roared fire from its mouth and it immediately roasted the knights who lined up to face it.
Haicor gasped and shook her head sideways, not believing her eyes. That, to her, was such a brutal and graphic scene she felt disturbed just staring at it. Ash just held his breath as he watched the chaotic scene.
"Let’s get out of here!", King vongarth shouted and ran out of the corridor of his palace, going at the back. Dhamsel, Haicor and Ash followed him.
The Scampering sounds of footfalls and the shouts and even the rough, swift motion of the wind made the place a hubbub of hullabaloo.
Rhett walked sideways, his sword still in hand, calculating the move of the dragon who was just flying in circles and pouring flames from his mouth upon the knights, leaving them in ashes.
Rhett agreed he’d certainly have to ignore the dissonant atmosphere of the place and open his ears and even try to hear, pick out, and go through any slight sounds- even the unheard ones.
He didn’t know if pausing like a statue would help but what could he lose trying. Now, he had to try all his options and make them useful. He looked up upwards and saw to his astonishment, arrows, massive in numbers, arched the dragon’s way.
Rhett gasped. The dragon’s direction was not too far from his and with the way the arrows were moving fast, it would surely meet him. And so, with less time to choose, he ducked and dived backwards and...
WHOOOSH!
The arrows had marked its target. About seven surrounded Rhett and he was grateful none of them had met him. The mere thought of the agonizing pain that would cause made him sick to his gut.
The arrows had met the dragon, and it gave out a loud cry of pain to make it more evident. The rider of the dragon had received one by his shoulders and he slowly pulled it out, gritting his teeth to submerge the seizing pain. Removing the arrow and throwing it away, the dragon rider looked at Rhett, his face not showing, the cloak covering it.
’Yikes!’, Rhett thought, swallowing a large lump of saliva he hadn’t known lingered in his throat before. This was going to be bad. He looked upwards, by his left and saw King vongarth, Dhamsel, Haicor and Ash standing by the terrace of a tower, staring at him.
And then, before he could even blink ,he heard a very bold voice bellow:
"Towards the special Knight!".
Rhett swerved his head to the dragon’s direction and saw that its rider was pointing to him, signalling to the dragon to come at him.
He could hear King vongarth’s frog voice shouting:
"It’s coming at you, slay it!".
Rhett’s eyes widened.
The Ember Dragon took to the air, flapping its wings slowly, like a butterfly just escaping the grip of a human’s hand. It suddenly put its right foot on the ground and leaped to the skies, coming with such a swift speed at Rhett who had already broken into a run.
Rhett ran, and the dragon pursued. Rhett was quite a good runner. Back at elementary school, he was the best runner in his school and now the ability and experience was very quite useful as he took them into use.
He wanted to see his stats, he wanted to know the kind of strength he was going to use against this beast. And so as he ran, he struggled with his right hand, his shield and sword on the left, trying to get the slayer’s pen out and bite the edge. But apparently, it wouldn’t be easy. The Knight’s armour was tight and he had difficulty putting his hand into his clothing.
He took left and then when it seemed impossible for his hand to enter the Knight armour into his pockets, he gave it up and tried to think of a solution.
Meanwhile the Ember dragon drove into a brick house, demolishing it completely. Rhett continued to run, not looking back because the mere snarl on the face of the dragon could make him terrified and then stumble and fall. And he didn’t want that to happen.
The dragon kept destroying buildings, huts, and it even made the violet dragon tree to bend. Hell!, the beast almost knocked it over.
Rhett was panting hard now, he couldn’t keep running fast, he was now slacking in pace and he hated it, now, the dragon would catch up with him and surely kill him and he wouldn’t want that to happen.
And so he kept running, his legs tired, his arms feeling the same and even his brain throbbing. He felt dazed now, woozy and very weak. A Knight’s armour was totally the most awful clothing to run in and Rhett had that pinned already in his brain.
But then, Rhett couldn’t decide his fate or predict it either, because soon, he was stumbling over a fallen branch, face flat to the ground, his hands in an awkward position behind his back.
The dragon was such a cruel predator, Rhett thought, it didn’t even wait, it was already in full speed at Rhett who for the first time since he saw the rider of the dragon, noticed that the fellow in the cloak was with a sword, and by saying ’Sword’, it was such a sight pleasing one. But it was the opposite for Rhett by the way.
