Chapter 92: You Are My Wife, You Are My Responsibility
Chapter 92: You Are My Wife, You Are My Responsibility
Levi returned home very late, it was ironic that a married man such as himself was coming home late when he really wanted to spend all waking moments with Lyse. However, he had noticed that she avoided him. Making sure to keep out of sight and only come out when she knew he was gone.
As he stepped into the quiet house, an eerie silence hung in the air. Mr. Dalton, the ever-present butler, appeared and approached him with a concerned expression.
"Mr. Van Doren, Mrs. Van Doren has not returned since she left this morning." he informed him, his voice low.
"Why did you not tell me this since!" Levi demanded.
A wave of unease washed over him at the thoughts of what could have happened to Lyse ran through his mind. She was usually at home by this time and was always mindful of her safety, especially after the recent ordeal. He pulled out his phone and dialed her bodyguard’s number.
"Joel, is Lyse with you?" he asked, his voice laced with worry.
"No, sir," the bodyguard replied, his voice equally concerned. "She is probably still at the studio. I thought she would be home by now."
A surge of anger and frustration coursed through Levi. Why hadn’t she informed him that she would be working late? He knew how dangerous it could be, especially given the recent threats and attacks from the paparazzi.
"Listen Joel," Levi said harshly, venting some of his anger on the bodyguard. "The next time Lyse dismisses you, you stay as close as possible to her and don’t let her leave your sight."
He rushed out of the house, his mind racing. He drove to the studio and left his car out front, his heart pounding in his chest as he jumped into the elevator. As he entered the building, he scanned the dimly lit corridors, his eyes searching for Lyse.
And when he could see no sign of her, his heart beat so hard that he felt so faint and he had to stop for a minute and take a breath to calm down. He dialed Ethan, rousing him out of sleep then he asked him to get the police to come.
Levi went down to his car, then had a sudden thought to go back in and check the parking lot. He could hardly believe his eyes when he say Lyse’s slight figure walking towards her car and without thinking, he reached out and grabbed her, holding her close to his heart and inhaling her scent.
Lyse immediately went into fight mode and started to struggle against Levi’s superior strength.
"Lyse, it’s me," a familiar voice said, cutting through the darkness or her fear.
Relieved and confused, Lyse turned to see Levi, his face etched with worry. She was still trembling, her heart pounding in her chest. She could not believe what had just happened. "Levi, what are you doing here?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
"I should be asking you that," Levi replied, his voice stern. "Why did you stay behind so late, and all alone? And why did you send your bodyguard away?"
Lyse felt a wave of guilt wash over her. She had been so focused on her work that she had forgotten about her own safety. "I’m sorry, Levi," she said, her voice filled with remorse. "I didn’t think..."
"You didn’t think?" Levi interrupted, still very shaken and angry. "What were you thinking, Lyse? You could have been hurt, or worse, what if it was not me but some crazed idiot that wanted to harm you?"
Lyse knew he was right. She had been reckless, and she could have paid the ultimate price but his tone did not sit well with her. She could not stand the fact that he was scolding her like he was her father.
"Well, it was you and not some crazed idiot, whoo hoo, lucky me." Lyse yelled at him. "I have been taking care of myself and I can still take care of myself."
Levi stared at her in disbelief. Why was she yelling at him? He should be the one scolding her but here she was, with eyebags, a messy bun, looking up at him and scolding him like he had been the one who did something wrong.
"I should put you over my knee and give you a good spanking for being so insolent." He said darkly, his voice hoarse.
A shiver ran through Lyse’s spine and she took a step back and swallowed nervously at the look in eyes. It was like she was his prey.
"You are my wife, you are my responsibility and if anything happens to you it will be on me." He continued, in the same tone of voice.
"You only care because of your reputation or for whatever twisted reason you married me." Lyse retorted petulantly. "Why don’t you go and show Anya this concern."
Levi’s face darkened even further and he stalked her, so she had to walk backwards till she was stopped by the cold feel of her car at her back. Even then, Levi did not stop until he was directly in her face.
He pulled her to him suddenly, leaving not even an inch of space between their bodies then he kissed her lips in a brutal, punishing kiss while Lyse struggled against his hold. Then he released her but did not step away from her.
"I am sick of this." He growled lowly. "I did not cheat on you, Anya set me up. And if you had the sense that god gave, you would know that a lot of people will do anything to ruin this marriage."
Lyse stared wide eyed as he took a step back, allowing her to breathe easier.
"If I wanted Anya, I could have made her my wife. I chose you. The same way I chose to leave everything and come looking for you at the first sign of trouble."
As he spoke, his tone grew weary. As if he was tired of trying to explain. He shrugged and turned away while Lyse watched him. Noticing for the first time that he looked like he was just coming from work.
She got into her car and drove out, only to see Levi in his car with the lights on, waiting for her.
