Chapter 81: Don’t Underestimate Me, I Know Things

Lottie smiled confidently and adjusted her sunglasses as she entered the upscale restaurant. She walked proudly as she was led to a private room, ignoring whispers that followed in her wake. Lottie knew what these people had to say about her, she had heard it all.

Ever since she had arrived the city with Jeff, she had been refused entry into the ranks of the elite class, the crème de la crème of society. Despite all of the money she spent on charitable events and all the stupid causes that were funded by their money they rejected them.

They still saw her as nouveau riche, a stranger without any roots who had come and tried to sit with them. That was why she wanted desperately for Brooke to be accepted by Sutton and her son, it would be a coup for her daughter to join their ranks.

Sutton, looking elegant and composed, sat at the only table in the room. As Lottie entered, she could see the disdain in Sutton’s eyes.

Lottie had no illusions about how Sutton felt about her and even Brooke. Fortunately, Sutton had to tolerate them because Brooke was a better choice that Lyse with her illegitimacy.

"Lottie," Sutton drawled, her voice dripping with condescension. "To what do I owe this surprising pleasure?"

When Lottie had called, seeking audience with her, Sutton had been very curious. She had wanted to say no because she had no inclination to spend time with the classless woman but after a thought, she decided to see what Lottie had to say.

Lottie ignored the snide remark. All she cared about was the fact that she would be seen in public, meeting privately with Sutton Marlowe. It would surely shut the mouths of people who were speculating that Brooke was also going to get dumped at the altar like Lyse.

"I needed to talk to you about something very important, Sutton," she said, her voice steady. "About Brandon."

Sutton raised an eyebrow. "Brandon? What about him?"

At that moment, they were interrupted by a waiter who came and took Lottie’s order before leaving them.

"You were saying something about my son, Lottie." Sutton said impatiently, her eyes narrowed.

"I saw how Brandon defended Lyse at dinner, I honestly think that he might still be in love with her." Lottie said, her voice low and conspiratorial.

Irritation flashed across Sutton’s face for a split second and disappeared but not before Lottie saw it, she felt triumphant at the fact that she had managed to rattle the usual cool socialite.

"My son listens to me and will have nothing to do with that gutter girl, he just has a soft spot for her like you would a homeless mutt and that will die soon." Sutton said and took a sip of her drink.

Lottie wanted to roll her eyes at Sutton denial like they had not all witnessed how Brandon had behaved jealous and protective at the table, but she knew better than to say all that, instead she said. "I know exactly how cunning and sly Lyse is, everyone thinks she is so sweet and harmless but she has to be taken seriously as a threat."

Sutton’s lack of an answer might be construed as a lack of interest but Lottie could see the spark in her eyes so she continued.

"I have information that can expose a scandal about Lyse, one so huge, that Levi would immediately dump her and she would never be able to hold her head up ever again."

Sutton’s eyes widened in interest but she tapered it and spoke cooly. "And what exactly is this salacious information you claim to have?"

As much as she did not want to get too excited, Sutton realized that this was promising. If indeed, Lyse could be driven away then she would be able to breathe easier.

Lottie hesitated. "I will tell you, but only if you agree to speed up the marriage between Brandon and Brooke."

Sutton stared at her in disbelief for a long moment, then scoffed. "Brooke? I am sure at this point that I made a mistake replacing Lyse with Brooke, she is just as bad as her sister."

Lottie tried to interrupt but Sutton interrupted her. "You are beneath me. You and Brooke are nothing but social climbers. And don’t think that i am not aware of the fact that you are responsible for Lyse’s allergic reaction, I wonder how Levi will feel to hear this."

Lottie’s face flushed with anger and fear. She had never been treated with such contempt and she wondered how Sutton knew about Lyse’s allergy. She realized that someone at the house must have been speaking.

What Lottie did not know, was that Sutton was only poking in the dark but Lottie’s reaction had confirmed her suspicions.

"I guess I was wrong in thinking that you and i could help each other." Lottie said angrily. "But don’t underestimate me, I know things."

Sutton’s expression turned wary. "What are you talking about?"

Lottie smirked. "Oh, you will find out soon enough."

With that, Lottie stood up and walked out of the private, leaving Sutton wondering what Lottie meant.

As Lottie walked out of the room, she headed to the restroom so that she could collect herself before leaving.

She was so upset at how she was treated by Sutton, so much that she had blurted out about having something on her when she knew absolutely nothing of importance.

But Sutton’s reaction told her that she had something to hide, and Lottie was determined to find it somehow.

When she eventually stepped out of the restroom and was on her way out, she saw a man entering the private room she had just left and she walked after him briskly. He looked vaguely familiar, making her wonder where she knew him from and more importantly, what Sutton was doing with him.

When she got to the door, she pressed her ears against the door in order to hear what was being said if possible.
