Chapter 30: Post-Nuptial Agreement
Chapter 30: Post-Nuptial Agreement
Lyse was stunned. They had dropped James off at work on their way and then come straight to this apartment building. When Joel opened the front door to one of the apartments, it was a far cry from the modest dwellings she was accustomed to.
It was a luxurious haven, a testament to Levi’s wealth and power. The sleek, modern design, the breathtaking views of the city, and the opulent furnishings were all beyond her wildest dreams.
But despite the grandeur of her surroundings, Lyse felt a growing sense of unease. She felt out of place and yearned for the simplicity of her own apartment, the warmth of human connection. Here, in this cold, sterile environment, she felt isolated and alone.
As she was lost in thought, Joel, her new bodyguard who made her feel awkward because why did she need a body guard approached her. "Ms Lyse, I hope that you find this place to your liking. Mr Van Doren has spared no expense."
Lyse forced a smile. "Thank you, Joel. It’s erm... impressive, and please just call me Lyse."
Joel stared at her as she stared back at him and she sensed that he was not going to call her just ’Lyse’.
"I sure hope that you will enjoy your new home." He said.
"New home?" Lyse echoed, confusion etched on her face. "What are you talking about?"
Joel’s expression turned serious. "This is where you will be staying, at least for the time being. It is a safe haven, a place where you can be protected."
Before Lyse could protest further and ask what she was being protected from, the door swung open. In the open doorway stood her new husband, his face a mask of seriousness. Beside him stood a man in a sleek charcoal grey suit, his expression equally austere.
Lyse’s heart skipped at the way she had thought about Levi, calling him her husband in her mind. Why was she thinking about him as her husband when this was all just fake. She reminded herself to not slip up and think of him as a husband since all this was going to be temporary.
"Lyse," Levi began, his voice low, "It is good to see you on your feet, I trust that you have settled in?"
"What am I doing here? Why did Joel say that I am going to be staying here?" Lyse demanded.
Levi looked at her then he glanced at Chris and Joel and they both got his message and exited the room, leaving them alone.
"Is this apartment not up to your satisfaction?" He asked with a raised eyebrow, "Would you prefer a bigger place or would you rather a house?"
"She had not even signed the documents yet and she already has expensive taste." He thought in his mind
"Idon’t want anything, I just want to go back to my own apartment." She retorted irritably.
"I’m afraid that is not going to be possible." He answered.
Lyse put her hands akimbo and glared at him as she wondered if this was going to be a prison sentence or a fake marriage. Suddenly even the money she had hoped to get from this agreement no longer held the appeal.
"Why not?" She burst out, her eyes narrowed in anger.
Levi looked at her then picked up a remote control and turned on the television.
Lyse looked at him in shock that he was blatantly ignoring her and that she would not be able to accept. As she was about to storm out of the room he spoke.
"Look."
She stopped and turned to the screen then her eyes widened when she saw that the news was all about Levi Van Doren being married. The people discussing it on the television seemed very interested in knowing who his mysterious wife was.
"They are hell bent on finding out who this wife is and when they do which will be soon you will not be safe in your former apartment." Levi said matter of fact from behind her.
Lyse turned around and Levi could see that she was questioning the wisdom of agreeing to the agreement with him and he waited patiently for her.
"So are you okay staying here then?"
He had heard of the commotion that had happen at the hospital and he was curious about how it had affected her. She looked calm but he wondered if that was only on the surface and he wondered if seeing her ex had made her change her mind about his proposal.
Lyse wordlessly nodded.
"I take it that you are still willing to go along with our agreement." Levi asked and she nodded again.
He walked to the door and came back in with Chris then he gestured to him. "This is Chris, my lawyer." He said to her then he turned to him. "Chris, if you would."
Chris stepped forward and held out his hand for a handshake then he led the way to the dining table where the three sat.
Then he handed Lyse a thick document. "This is a post-nuptial agreement. Mr Van Doren tells me that you both have spoken about it."
When Lyse nodded he continued. "It contains the benefits that you will receive, what is expected of you and the duration of the agreement. Would you like to read it?" He asked.
Lyse stared hesitantly at the document before her and Chris came to her side and leaned over her before flipping through the pages until he settled on a page.
"These are the benefits" he explained and Lyse’s eyes bulged at the number of zeros but her eyes landed on a line and she made a face.
"Six months?" She gasped.
"What is the problem? Is that time too short?"
"No, that is too long." She exclaimed. "I would be more comfortable with three months."
Levi stared at her while Chris looked from Levi to Lyse.
"Fine." Levi said at last. "We can do three months and in addition I expect a fulfillment of your wifely duties in my bed."
