I Married A Degraded Alpha -
Chapter 28: Rescuing Someone
Chapter 28: Rescuing Someone
Having chosen the mecha, Tuss spent another half an hour bargaining with the salesman, eventually settling on a price of 50 million astracredits and even snagging a dimensional button valued at a million as a complimentary gift.
The mecha was put into the dimensional button, which Tuss casually tossed to Yuri.
Yuri caught it and promptly put it on her finger.
Watching their exchange, the salesman thought to himself that they must be used to this sort of thing. The man handed out gifts carelessly and the woman accepted with ease. It seemed the man who walked with crutches was a generous one, and the woman under the cloak must be an exquisite beauty.
After buying the mecha, Yuri and Tuss started looking for a place that sold suppressants.
Tuss noticed Yuri casually stroking the dimensional button on her finger and laughed, "Do you like it that much?"
Yuri nodded enthusiastically. After all, the mecha and dimensional button represented interstellar travel and space storage respectively. As an unsophisticated country girl, she was more than just fond of them, she was completely in love with them.
"I’ll buy you even better ones in the future," Tuss blurted out.
Yuri just smiled, not taking his words to heart. She was perfectly capable of earning her own money to buy whatever she wanted.
The place that sold suppressants was tucked away and it took Yuri and Tuss almost an hour to find it.
As Tuss had predicted, the suppressants here were three times the price of those sold outside. After gritting her teeth and purchasing hundreds of bottles of suppressants, hundreds of cans of spray, and thousands of gland patches, the astracredits they had earned from selling the Blue Keystone were almost completely gone.
"Making money is a long and difficult journey," Yuri sighed.
Feeling the urgency, Tuss agreed, "I’ll find some ways to make money when we get back."
Yuri responded with a hum, "Include me when you find something."
Tuss hesitated, "I might tutor people on the interstellarnet."
Yuri’s face froze, "Never mind."
As someone who hadn’t even completed her primary school education, she didn’t qualify.
Having bought all the necessary items, Yuri was ready to head back.
"Since we’re here, do you need anything else?" Tuss asked.
Yuri immediately waved her hands, "I don’t need anything else."
Her heart was still bleeding from the expenditure.
Knowing that she was upset about the astracredits they had spent, Tuss couldn’t help but chuckle. He didn’t push her any further and said, "Let’s head back then."
They started to walk back, with Yuri deliberately slowing her steps to walk beside Tuss. This way, she could extend a hand in time if someone bumped into him again.
Just as the entrance to the black market was in sight, a riot suddenly broke out. Someone in the crowd yelled, "Catch that beta."
Countless men in black with weapons sprang out from every corner of the black market, rushing towards the frantic beta.
Chaos erupted in the black market.
Yuri and Tuss were pushed and shoved along with the crowd.
"I’ll carry you." Yuri grabbed Tuss’s hand and asked him to climb onto her back.
Tuss didn’t refuse. In such a situation, he could easily be knocked over while walking with his crutches.
As Yuri tried to make her way towards the edge of the crowd, she said, "I smell a faint hint of lime."
"That’s the pheromone of a beta in heat," Tuss said solemnly.
Yuri’s face changed behind her mask, "Why would there be a beta in heat here?"
"It must have escaped from one of the black market’s entertainment establishments," Tuss explained. He didn’t want her exposed to such dark things, but he worried that she would get herself into trouble if he didn’t explain.
"Is there human trafficking here?" Yuri was shocked.
Tuss pursed his lips and hummed an acknowledgment, "Not just here, it’s prevalent across the entire galaxy. Particularly, the trafficking of betas, it’s highly profitable. The Alliance cracks down on it every year, but there are still many people willing to take the risk."
The ratio of alphas to betas was two to one, with alphas outnumbering betas by double. This meant that not every alpha could find a beta match. Especially given that most betas ranked relatively low, many E-class betas were incapable of aiding alphas in managing their Sea of Consciousness. This further intensified the demand gap for betas across the star system.
Where there’s demand, there’s supply. As long as the gap wasn’t resolved, the trafficking of betas would continue.
Yuri also understood the crux of the matter and thought that it made sense why the Alliance had such strict regulations for betas. Given such social conditions, stricter rules only served to protect them.
Even though she knew that the beta was in a dangerous situation, Yuri had no intentions of intervening. Carrying Tuss on her back, she stuck to the wall and moved forward.
Hearing Tuss panting, she abruptly remembered something, "We forgot to buy sedatives."
Tuss froze for a moment, then forced a smile, "Should we go buy them now?"
After a pause, he added, "Sedatives aren’t restricted, it’d be more cost-effective to buy them outside."
Yuri agreed, "I’ll walk faster. We’ll buy them once we’re out of the black market."
Even though Yuri was missing an arm and carrying Tuss on her back, she wasn’t any slower than others.
The closer they got to the exit, the more crowded it became until it was nearly impossible to move.
Screams and cries filled the air as chaos reigned.
"There’s a fight," Yuri said, standing on her tiptoes.
"That beta has backup," Tuss said from her back, seeing the situation more clearly than she could. Both sides were engaged in combat.
"Someone’s dead!" someone in the crowd shouted.
"Don’t push, don’t push, there’s a dead body up front."
"Hide in the shops."
"Open the door, open it quickly."
The black market’s managers understood the consequences of a stampede and had their shops’ doors opened. Within five minutes, more than half of the crowd had dispersed into the shops.
Just as Yuri was about to follow the crowd and seek shelter in one of the shops, Tuss said, "They are students from Military Academy No. 1."
Yuri halted her steps, "Do you know them?"
"One of them is Ender’s younger brother," Tuss patted Yuri, "Put me down."
Yuri remembered the young man with fox eyes and knew that they couldn’t avoid getting involved in this situation.
She put Tuss down, then took out a suppressant and asked him, "Where should I inject this?"
Tuss had already moved forward with his cane, and without turning back, he replied, "Anywhere is fine."
"In that case, I’ll just inject it into my thigh," Yuri mumbled to herself.
By the time she had finished injecting herself with the suppressant, Tuss had already joined the fight. His iron cane whirled around, creating afterimages, quick and ruthless.
The escaping beta was disheveled, clad in an oversized men’s jacket, and being protected by a young man.
Apart from the young man, there were six other individuals of roughly the same age, four males and two females, all alphas.
Moreover, without exception, all the brawlers in the black market were alphas, there was not a single omega among them.
The blend of various scents overwhelmed Yuri before she even got close, making her head spin.
She felt nauseous.
More men in black were joining the fight. Suppressing the sourness in her throat, Yuri charged into the fray as well.
Her weapon was a piece of metal she had casually torn from the street. She continuously stretched it, turning it into a whip. The whip, like a long tongue, seemed to possess its own consciousness, controlled by her at will, wreaking havoc around.
With the whip in her hand, Yuri looked incredibly cool.
The young boys and girls engaged in the fight stared in shock at this caped figure who had suddenly appeared. They thought the man with the cane was cool enough, but this whip-wielding figure was even cooler.
