Chapter 205: An Extraordinary Child
In the operating room, the grubby little child was crying and struggling to crawl out of the artificial womb. With eyes too immature to make out any distinct objects, the child was driven by instinct, managing to make his way out.
The sight was, to say the least, horrifying.
When the child had fully emerged, not only were Yuri and Tuss struck dumb, but the doctors and nurses wore expressions of shock as well. Is this a human child? Could it be some kind of insectoid offspring instead?
The infant cried and cried, receiving no response for what felt like forever. This angered the child, who began to flail and glare, causing the sturdy operating table to thump with each hit.
Tuss looked at the child, then at the ruined artificial womb, and then back at Yuri’s belly. He swallowed hard, remarking, "Thank goodness it wasn’t your belly."
Yuri wholeheartedly agreed, "That’s terrifying."
They exchanged glances, both nervously averting their eyes. They knew they had likely overdone it with the Enova supplements, leading to this situation.
Fortunately, the medical team’s professionalism shone through. After a moment of stunned silence, they began dealing with the situation at hand.
They cut the umbilical cord, measured the baby’s length, weighed him, gave him a bath, and then began checking various health indicators.
When they began to attend to him, the baby finally calmed down. He no longer cried or made a fuss, allowing the doctors and nurses to handle him easily.
Seeing this, Yuri and Tuss sighed in relief. At least the baby is acting normally now.
But reality proved they had been too quick to relax. The next moment, the baby in the nurse’s arms suddenly stretched, kicking his little feet. The nurse yelped as a rib snapped from the force.
The nurse’s face paled instantly. Yuri, quick to react, rushed forward to take the child, apologizing profusely, "I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. The baby’s just too spirited. We’ll cover all the costs."
Sweating profusely from the pain, the nurse was helped onto the operating table by her colleagues. Once she was lying down, she managed to ask, "Is the baby’s foot alright?"
The doctor examined the child’s foot, felt it, then shook his head, "There’s absolutely no problem."
"Aren’t baby bones supposed to be soft?" Another nurse asked, puzzled.
"That’s usually the case," the doctor replied.
Upon hearing the doctor’s comment, everyone in the room turned to look at Yuri and Tuss. Their eyes seemed to be asking: What kind of child have you brought into the world?
"Doctor, is our child not normal? Is there something wrong with his body?" Tuss asked, his face a mix of innocence and worry.
A twitch appeared at the corner of Yuri’s mouth. She hadn’t realized Tuss could be such a good actor.
"There’s nothing wrong with the baby’s body. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. The baby is exceptionally healthy. It’s the first time we’ve encountered a newborn with such robust physical health," the doctor exclaimed.
"It might have something to do with his parents," another doctor added.
Ordinary parents wouldn’t have been able to produce such a child.
Given that the child had kicked and broken a nurse’s rib, Yuri held onto him thereafter. Under the nurse’s guidance, Yuri and Tuss learned to mix formula, burp the baby, change diapers, and swaddle him...
Once they had learned the basics, they were allowed to take the baby home, on the condition that they brought the baby back to the hospital for check-ups daily for the next three days.
In the lev, Tuss took the sleeping child from Yuri.
"Has he already awakened his Enova?" Tuss could feel a faint metallic Enova from the child, but he wasn’t certain whether it was from the Enova he had provided, or if it was inherent to the child’s crystal core.
He couldn’t sense his own crystal core, nor could he feel one in the child.
"Yes, he’s already at Enova Level Two," Yuri replied. Her psychic power coursed through the child’s forehead, looking at the crystal core the size of a soybean, she had a bad premonition. "I predict he’s going to be RATHER mischievous," she added, emphasizing the word ’rather’.
Tuss frowned, "I’ll take care of him."
Yuri couldn’t just hand the child over to him alone.
Tuss and Yuri got out of the vehicle with the child in their arms. Daleks, Ender and the others, who had been anxiously waiting, immediately gathered around, being exceedingly careful.
"He’s so small," Daleks commented innocently.
"They’re all this small when they’re born. But being so fair at birth is rare," Ender added, sounding like he had experience with babies.
"He’s so handsome, with Tuss’s contour and Yuri’s features," Tyrone admired, his eyes gleaming with enthusiasm.
"Can I hold him?" Ender asked, full of anticipation.
Tuss glanced at him and found it hard to refuse. He decided to let him hold the baby.
Tuss gently handed the baby to Ender, who clearly knew how to hold a baby properly.
"Hand him to me in five minutes," Daleks immediately said.
"And to me after you," Tyrone quickly added.
Soon, Vernon, Jo, Delamak and the others also chimed in.
Seeing their proper handling of the baby, Yuri was surprised, "I thought young people didn’t like handling babies?"
"That depends on whose child it is," Daleks responded.
The others nodded in agreement, they cared for the child because they cared for the parents.
"Be sure to point his legs away when he starts kicking," Yuri warned.
"Why?" Daleks and the others asked, puzzled.
"He just broke a nurse’s rib with his kick," Yuri mentioned, and once again felt sorry for the nurse.
Daleks and the others gasped, "Really?"
Yuri gave them a look that said, ’Do you think I’d lie about this?’
Daleks and the others were even more excited.
"Wow, that’s my godson for you," Daleks said, his eyes sparkling.
"How’s their child related to you?" Vernon shot him down.
"I don’t care, I’m the godfather," Daleks insisted, his eyes filled with pride for his godson.
The others were envious; they also wanted to be godfathers. Having such an amazing godson would definitely earn them bragging rights.
Yuri thought she would be busier after the baby was born, but she was wrong. Her days were not much different than before.
She spent six hours each day grooming the Sea of Consciousness for the alphas, an hour guiding the soldiers in training, three to four hours manufacturing mechas, and the rest of her time was spent eating, looking after her son, and sleeping.
Tuss seemed to be just as busy as before the baby was born, dealing with administrative work, leading troop training, and occasionally patrolling outside the defense line.
As for their son, his schedule was clearly laid out - who would look after him at this point, and who would take over at the next. Those who didn’t make it into the schedule could only look on enviously.
Every time Yuri saw this scene, she would say in exasperation, "You can have your own children."
"But Yuri, we’re single," Daleks would reply.
"It’s Yuri’s duty, as well as a superior’s responsibility, to play matchmaker," Tyrone would add.
Ender’s gaze deepened, but he kept quiet.
Yuri felt like she had shot herself in the foot.
