Chapter 220: Chapter 217: Mermaid Replica
Then Mu Turtle Ying quietly squatted at the entrance of the Replica gate, secretly peeking inside.
At the same time inside the Replica gate, a little head sneakily peeked out.
One looked up to see half a swaying fish tail, the other looked down to see half a turtle shell.
"lidhu!"
A humanoid creature with a fish tail and holding a rake swam out from the woods and yelled something their way.
Mu Ying tilted her head, What did she say?
Also, could this not be a mermaid?
The mermaids she had read about in the witch magic school’s archives had a human upper body but seemed not to look like this!
The upper half of the mermaids in the archives looked almost like humans, but this humanoid creature, though its upper body bore feminine traits similar to human females and had hair, had blue skin with fins on the sides of its face and arms.
It was quite different from humans, but undeniably, she was still beautiful, a far cry from the Koutao Fishmen at the Coastal City port who looked simply like fish with legs—nothing pleasant to look at.
For now, let’s call her a mermaid. She was coming their way, but not toward Mu Ying; she was simply curious about the turtle overhead, which was the main attraction.
Seeing the mermaid’s tail, the little fish tail wiggling above evidently belonged to another mermaid, although she had stretched her upper body outside of the Replica.
Though it appeared to be a Light Gate, in reality, it was two spaces connected together; the little mermaid couldn’t hear sounds inside the Replica.
Mu Ying silently withdrew her head and decided to explore later after they had left; the ocean was also on the other side, after all, a turtle was nothing unusual. If she had moved a bit slower just now, she wouldn’t have had to awkwardly bump into the little mermaid.
But some things are simply beyond a turtle’s control.
She was completely held down by a pair of small hands, just having glimpsed the scenery outside the Replica when she was "taken" inside.
If this had been on land, her size wasn’t as large as her turtle teacher’s, but she would still not be something a little girl could easily pick up.
Mu Ying struggled, flailing her limbs trying to swim away, using hardly any strength, but the little mermaid still let go of her hands.
It seemed the little mermaid was just a child acting mischievously without any malice; Mu Ying wasn’t in a hurry to flee but decided to look around first.
The big mermaid, holding the little mermaid by the ears, spoke in a Language that Mu Ying couldn’t understand, then they both swam towards the woods.
Mu Ying followed behind them.
This forest seemed vast; without following them, she might never find where they dwelled.
But after just two minutes of swimming, the two mermaids who had been ahead suddenly disappeared.
Mu Ying could swear on her turtle shell that they simply vanished.
She swam to the spot where they disappeared and searched for a long time, finding nothing unusual; swimming further, it was just an endless forest.
This seemingly normal underwater forest suddenly felt extraordinary.
Mu Ying tried swimming back, but the entrance to the Replica couldn’t be found anymore.
She swam upwards, hoping to reach the top of the forest to see the direction, but the endless trees blocked any view of the Replica’s entrance.
As for above, the light was quite bright, appearing to be shallow water, but when she tried swimming below the waterline, she was stopped.
This must be the boundary of the Replica.
Mu Ying really hadn’t expected to run into so many instances. She was cautious, yet still took a tumble here.
Who would have thought that there would be a forest within the instance that could make one lose their way?
The forest below must have some issue, for the instance was made up of space fragments and shouldn’t have been so vast.
She returned to the forest and as she wandered, she slowly realized that the trees were becoming increasingly familiar, almost as if they were all ones she had seen before.
After carefully distinguishing this sense of familiarity, she realized that after a certain period, she seemed to encounter the same trees repeatedly.
She clearly hadn’t changed her direction and had been walking straight ahead.
So, there was only one possibility, she was walking in circles in the forest, and the forest was likely not large at all.
The fact that the hermit crab could leave indicated that the Replica gate was still within this forest; she just hadn’t seen it.
Why hadn’t she seen it?
Mu Ying thought of the fruit stuck on the back of the hermit crab. Other creatures that entered couldn’t leave, but it could.
Could it be because of that fruit?
Where did the fruit come from?
She had assumed it was the fruit borne by these trees but, after walking for so long, she hadn’t seen any fruit on the trees.
Maybe she should revert to human form and try using the North Pointing Skill?
Although Mu Ying had come to the sea to look for ores, she also wanted to seize the opportunity to practice in her turtle form and accumulate some Experience Value. She didn’t want to revert to human form unless absolutely necessary. Often switching forms made things convenient for her but didn’t result in much progress in her cultivation.
"dhljdf!"
A voice rose, and she was grabbed by two small hands again.
In her turtle form, Mu Ying had invested all her ability points into defense, and the amplification from Wild Tooth was the same. Her defense was very high everywhere except where her shell didn’t cover.
But her speed and attack were basically zero; she could only hunt by the method of lying in wait.
It was the little mermaid from before again. Mu Ying really hadn’t noticed when she appeared or where she came from.
The little mermaid pressed a small fruit onto her turtle shell.
Suddenly, the world in front of Mu Ying changed; the forest wasn’t endless anymore, and not far beside her, there was a cluster of low shrubs very similar to the forest trees, bearing the same type of fruit that was previously on the hermit crab and now on her.
The forest area was long, but not wide, surrounding a large sea area in the middle. She could see intersecting coral fields, mermaids working among them, numerous Pearl Clams, and brightly lit caves that seemed to be dwelling places of the mermaids.
Above the sea, mermaids were training sharks.
However, all this was just a fleeting glimpse because the kindly little mermaid had taken her beside the Replica gate, tapped her head, and pushed her towards the Replica gate.
Mu Ying hesitated a moment but went through the Replica gate back.
She really wanted to revert to human form and get to know the kind little mermaid and preferably make a friend. However, she was afraid of scaring her.
Furthermore, she wasn’t sure how long the fruit on her back would work and worried that if a conflict arose and she once again couldn’t see the real vista, she would be at a disadvantage.
So, keeping her harmless turtle form a secret for the time being was better. Once out of the instance, she could revert to human form and then cautiously test the waters. If it didn’t work out, she could still find a place without mermaids to transform into a turtle. Maybe the little girl could rescue her again, because her method of pressing the fruit seemed quite skilled; perhaps the hermit crab had escaped in the same way.
