Chapter 171: Chapter 171 – A New Gate Opens
Sylvia stood amidst the ruins of the battlefield, dark mist slowly receding, leaving behind thin but distinct traces of death energy. Beside her, Alicia and Stacia were still chatting casually, as if the recent events were nothing more than a short training session.
"I thought the gods would be more creative," muttered Stacia as she shut her book with a snap. "Just one giant sword that got deflected right away. Disappointing."
Alicia smiled softly, her blue lantern flame still swaying gently in the air, casting a calm light on her serene face. "Maybe they’re just testing us. This could’ve been merely a warm-up."
Sylvia exhaled lightly, her gaze turned to the sky, now clear again but harboring hidden threats behind its white clouds. "If they want to keep testing our limits, I don’t mind. But we can’t just keep waiting for the next attack. We need to take the initiative."
Stacia raised an eyebrow, slightly intrigued. "Take the initiative how? You have a plan?"
Sylvia nodded slowly. "Of course. It’s time we take the next step. This world is becoming unstable. Before everything spirals out of control, we need to gather more information on what the gods are truly planning."
Alicia spun her lantern gently, the blue flame flaring slightly brighter. "So where do we start?"
"From the place closest to their heaven," Sylvia replied firmly. "We’re heading to Velthya. That city’s connected to many trade routes and minor temples. It could be our gateway to uncover the truth."
"Velthya?" Stacia grinned. "So, we’re heading back to your little affair?" NovelFire
"There’s no affair! I’ve never cheated on Sofia," Sylvia replied flatly, but with a hint of panic because while she hadn’t cheated, she was a bit captivated by Velthya.
Stacia and Alicia giggled lightly.
The three of them left the battlefield ruins, walking slowly toward the road that led to the city. The remaining zombies followed them silently, their steps filled with reverence.
Meanwhile, in the original world in the city of Nocture tensions were rising rapidly. The usually clear skies were now shrouded in dark clouds, and the wind carried the scent of gunpowder and dust. Upon the city walls, undead guards stood tall and still, their empty eyes locked onto the horizon. Beyond the city, the sound of thousands of marching soldiers echoed, mixed with the hum of war machines and the roars of armored vehicles.
In Nocture’s command room, Sofia stood tensely before a table cluttered with maps, intel reports, and warning letters. She wore no battle armor just simple everyday clothes but the aura of authority she exuded made the officers from various allied races stand straight with respect.
"Lady Sofia, enemy forces are on the move," Zark reported in a low tone. "Their tanks and armored units have entered a three-kilometer radius."
Sofia nodded calmly. "Prepare the front lines to intercept them. Let them enter our first trap, then disable their vehicles quickly."
Zark saluted and turned to issue orders. Sofia took a deep breath, her eyes sharply focused on the map in front of her. With Sylvia gone, she knew the responsibility for this city and every life in Nocture now rested solely on her.
"All units, hold your positions," Sofia’s voice rang through the city’s communication system. "They’re here to destroy us. Do not let them breach these walls."
With surprising calm, Sofia walked onto the central command balcony, which overlooked the battlefield. From here, she could clearly see the human army advancing like a dark tide—slow, steady, and overwhelming.
On the other side, Nocture’s undead army stood silent in perfect formation. They didn’t breathe, didn’t tremble just waited for the order to strike. Behind the troops, the massive black dragon Sylvia left behind Noir stood tall, its crimson eyes glowing fiercely, fully aware of the threat approaching.
"First strike!" shouted a commander from the watchtower.
BOOOMMM! BOOOMM!
The ground trembled violently as projectiles from the human military struck the city’s outer walls. Dust billowed high, momentarily obscuring visibility.
"Hold your ground!" Sofia ordered, her voice calm yet firm. "Do not retaliate until they are closer!"
She raised her hand high, a clear signal for all Nocture forces to remain still. Through the dust, the enemy’s footsteps grew louder, and their shouts began to rise.
Sofia closed her eyes briefly, her thoughts filled with images of Sylvia battling in another world. "I won’t let you down, Sylvia," she whispered.
The dust began to settle, revealing enemy lines dangerously close to the city gates. They looked confident, unopposed so far.
"All undead units advance now!" Sofia commanded loudly.
Instantly, the undead moved forward swiftly and in perfect coordination. The clash of weapons filled the air, followed by gunfire and explosions.
On the central military side, commanders grew panicked. The undead were far more organized than expected. Their firepower, initially effective, now had minimal impact.
"What is this?! I thought they were just ordinary zombies!" a senior officer shouted.
"They’re clearly not," another replied nervously. "They’re moving like trained soldiers!"
Amid the chaos, Noir leaped from the fortress walls into the sky, unfurling its massive black wings. With a thunderous roar that shook the battlefield, the dragon dove toward the enemy troops.
GRAAAOOOORRRR!!!
A torrent of dark fire erupted from Noir’s mouth, instantly engulfing armored vehicles in flames. Screams of panic and terror echoed across the battlefield.
"You were warned, yet you still came!" Sofia’s voice rang from the balcony, carried across the field. "You thought Nocture was weak without Sylvia? You were dead wrong."
Her eyes blazed with determination. "We will defend this city to the last drop of blood until not a single one of you dares return!"
A fierce battle exploded once more beneath Nocture’s dark skies deciding the fate of a nation that had only just been born.
The humans, once confident in their superior technology and numbers, began to feel immense pressure. The war machines they once took pride in now lay in flames, while the land before the city gates had turned into a killing field filled with smoke, blood, and burning flesh.
Yet it wasn’t just the dragon Noir that posed a threat.
In the rear ranks of the undead, special units began to move. These were no ordinary zombies, but elite forces personally trained by Sylvia and Celes consisting of resurrected former human generals, skilled human, and creatures born from forbidden alchemical experiments. Their bodies were clad in dark armor, and their eyes glowed with dense deathly aura.
Some even rode unique mounts undead wolves, giant skeletal eagles, and flaming steel warhorses.
"This isn’t just city defense," muttered one of the human commanders, his face pale. "This... this is like facing a demon army."
Meanwhile, in the emergency communications room of the central military command, waves of defeat reports began pouring in one after another. Coordination was falling apart, and the room was filled with voices of panic.
"Signal lost from armored unit in Sector D!"
"Right infantry unit hit by the dragon! They... they’re all burned!"
"We need to retreat! This isn’t what we anticipated!"
Yet in the midst of the desperation, an old man in a general’s uniform stood from his seat. His eyes were sharp, and his lips were drawn tight.
"There will be no retreat. That’s a direct order from the Central Council. Nocture must be destroyed. If we fail, the ’hero’ title you so proudly wear will be revoked. You know the consequences."
That voice silenced the room. Their fear of the Central Council was somehow greater than the dragon’s flames.
Back on the battlefield, Sofia stood firm on a balcony, the night wind brushing her flowing silver hair. Though her face appeared calm, her mind raced with rapid calculations.
"Left unit, shift westward the poison traps are ready. Middle unit, hold position. We’ll lure them in deeper."
Her commands flowed swiftly and precisely. She wasn’t just holding the line she was shaping the battlefield to her will.
Zark appeared from behind a stone pillar, breathing slightly heavy. "Lady Sofia, the enemy has entered the second trap zone. Shall we activate it now?"
Sofia observed the battlefield for a moment, then nodded. "Do it." View the correct content at NovelFire
Zark gave the signal through a communication crystal. In the next second, the ground beneath the human soldiers trembled then collapsed. A massive pit lined with sharp spikes opened beneath them, followed by a surge of purple poison mist that quickly spread through their rear lines.
Panic-filled screams rang out. Some soldiers tried to flee, but the mist moved too fast. The toxin, derived from undead flora beneath Nocture’s castle, wasn’t instantly lethal, but it weakened reflexes and disrupted balance.
That was the moment the undead forces surged in, with swords, claws, and fangs poised to tear apart anything still moving.
Else where amid the lingering death mist from the earlier battlefield Sylvia slowly turned her head, as if sensing something from afar.
"Do you feel it too?" asked Alicia, following Sylvia’s gaze.
"Yes," Sylvia replied softly. "Sofia is fighting."
Stacia closed her eyes and opened a page of her book, which transformed into a reflective glass. Within it, a faint image of the battle in Nocture appeared. Her eyes darkened. "They sent a full force just because you’re not there."
"They think I’m weak, or that Nocture would fall without me." Sylvia smirked faintly. "But they chose the wrong enemy."
She slowly raised her hand, a faint black light glowing in her palm. It wasn’t to attack but to touch and strengthen the magic channel between her and Noir, the dragon guardian of the city.
"Noir," she whispered, "show them Nocture never stood solely because of me."
Back in Nocture, Noir raised his head and roared once more. But this time, his body became shrouded in a denser, far more terrifying black aura. Sylvia’s magic channeling from another world merged with him, reinforcing every scale, fang, and flame on his body.
The sky turned a deep red. Noir’s winged shadow stretched across the heavens like an eclipse. The temperature plummeted. Even the undead troops stepped back, giving the black dragon space to unleash his ultimate attack.
With a roar that shook the world, Noir unleashed Deathflame pure black fire capable of burning not just flesh, but the soul itself. Vehicles exploded, humans were incinerated before they could scream, and the ground beneath them turned to ash.
The soldiers’ final cries sounded like a sorrowful requiem. Most of them didn’t even know what killed them only the darkness that came too swiftly.
When silence finally settled over the battlefield, only corpses, scorched machines, and thick black mist remained.
Sofia still stood in her place, eyes sharp as she stared into the distance. No smile, no celebration. Only the cold gaze of a general who had just defended her city.
Zark stepped closer and spoke quietly. "We’ve won."
Sofia replied in an icy tone. "Not yet. They’ll come again. And next time... it may not be humans who arrive, but something far worse."
She turned her face toward the sky, as if looking beyond the clouds to where Sylvia now walked in another world, carrying with her the flame of both hope and destruction.
