Chapter 45: Rin, The Entertainer! 2
Chapter 45: Rin, The Entertainer! 2
Rin moved closer to see it for himself. The strong scent almost burned his nose. He was sure that it was indeed whiskey.
Evan poured himself a glass and held it up. The amber liquid gleamed under the chandelier.
With a smirk, he hovered his hand over the glass. Ice bloomed from his palm, forming neat cubes that clinked into the drink.
Rin’s eyes sparkled.
"Whoa... magic ice?" He reached for the glass slowly, cautiously. "Do I drink this? Is it rude to refuse?"
Evan simply smiled.
"If you refuse, I’ll have to find a different hole to force it into your body. Down there would be good,"
"Haha! Thanks for the drink, sir!" Rin said, taking just a sip. He squeezed his face he felt the small liquid burning his throat.
"Well, was that ice magic?" Rin asked again, finding a way to change the topic and avoid drinking alcohol.
"You look interested in magic despite knowing you can’t use it," Evan said as he gulped the drink at a go and began to pour another round into his glass cup.
"Do you find it strange?" Rin asked and Evan nodded.
"It is... But, why don’t you satisfy your curiosity yourself,"
"How do I do that?" Rin question.
"Come with me," Evan dropped the cup and grabbed the bottle instead, leading Rin out of his room.
.
Soon, Rin found himself being led through the mansion’s halls to the library.
It was massive.
"I thought I was here to be an entertainer," Rin muttered.
"You are. But that doesn’t mean I can’t let you learn a few things. Come with me."
They moved to the magical theory section, where rows of dusty books lined the tall wooden shelves.
Evan pulled out a volume and handed it to Rin.
"You can read. But you can’t wield," he said.
"Because I’m an omega," Rin muttered bitterly.
"Yes. And because omegas are weak," he poked Rin’s shoulder and handed him other books.
Rin couldn’t say anything except stare at the book he was given.
"You may read any book in this library. However..." The duke said, touching his hair. "Once the clock strikes 6. You must return,"
’Why do I have a time limit? What am I? Cinderella?’
"Do you understand, Rin?" The Duke asked.
"Yes, sir!" Rin nodded.
The duke grinned and walked away, with his bottle of alcohol.
Rin watched him leave before he sank onto a couch and began flipping through pages.
"It’s obvious that omegas can’t use magic, however. I don’t mind learning about it"
Rin didn’t waste a second.
His eyes flew across the text, soaking in every word. The first few pages talked about the history of mana and how Alphas were born with a natural core that let them control and manipulate magic. That’s one of the reasons they were strong.
Omegas, however, were deemed incapable.
It’s not because they didn’t have mana, but because their bodies couldn’t handle it. They were born delicate and weak. Instead of mana cores inside their bodies, their bodies were meant for breeding.
Rin’s lips thinned. He wasn’t enjoying the discrimination.
But he continued reading... Since the first book spoke of the natural bond between mana and bloodlines. Alphas were born with both strong bodies and the ability to harness mana. Betas had rare, unstable access. Beta mages were super rare. Omegas? They were magic voids. The percentage of Omega mage was equal to zero.
But then, in an old, dusty tome, he found a story.
The first Omega born with mana.
He was a miracle child, stronger than most. He was trained secretly by a rogue mage.
But at age twenty, three years after his first heat, he died. His organs had ruptured. His body couldn’t handle the magic boiling inside him.
There were different theories about his death.
Maybe his body really couldn’t handle it.
Maybe it was because of his manifestation as an omega and his heat...
Maybe because Omegas can’t be mages at all.
No one could decide.
Over the decades, any Omega with mana was captured and sent to the Mage Tower. There, a ritual would be performed to seal their mana.
Seal?
Rin’s breath hitched.
’Seal?’
He remembered his sister had spoken of a seal before disappearing that day.
’Was she talking about this seal? Since there are two types of seals? Mana and demonic. Which one do I have?’
He stared at his palm, uncertain.
If he was indeed sealed... Then why? And by whom?
He opened another book to start reading but paused when he noticed the time.
6:04pm.
"Crap!" He bolted up, grabbed a random book and ran out.
Evan told him to leave immediately it clicked 6 but he was late.
’He won’t kill me for being late, would he?’
He rushed downstairs, with the book in his hand. Then, he found Evan in the living room, wearing a pair of glasses, sleeves rolled up, and a pile of documents in front of him. The light from the fireplace painted soft shadows across his face.
’Damn it. Why did he have to be hot and competent?’
Evan looked up, smiling faintly.
"You’re late, Rin,"
"I’m sorry! I lost track of time."
"Of course, you did. You must have been enjoying yourself that you spent seven hours reading..."
"Wait! Seven hours?" Rin’s eyes widened in shock. He hated reading. He never read for more than thirty minutes when it was time for exam. But today...
’What has this world done to my hatred for reading?’
He screamed internally.
"Anyway..." The duke’s voice pulled him from his thoughts. "I’m starving. I was about to eat your dog."
"...What? You can’t touch Niblet," he yelled and Niblet barked, supporting his master.
Evan laughed, taking off his glasses.
"Just kidding. But I am hungry. So, go make dinner."
Rin blinked.
"Wait... what? You mean, I should make dinner,"
Evan gestured toward the kitchen.
"Do you want me to make it myself? I mean, I could cook... that’s if you would enjoy eating a whole plate of burnt sacrifice,"
Rin tried not to imagine it. The Duke is a noble, so there’s no way he would actually know how to cook.
"You’re staying here for two weeks. You’re my guest. And... my entertainer. So entertain me by cooking something delicious. You should hurry or I’ll really end up eating Nibble,"
"It’s Niblet!" He yelled. "Get it right you hungry Duke!" He didn’t yell out the last part.
Rin sighed, dragging his feet toward the kitchen.
"What is this? When did the genre change to gourmet?"
