Chapter 30: The Imaginary Intruder!

Lucien was at the training hall, waiting for Rin to appear for training. While he did his sit-ups and press-ups, staring at the door, Rin never came. The door didn’t open and a white haired beauty didn’t walk in.

He immediately sprang up from the floor, grabbed a towel to wipe the sweat off his body. He had no idea why Rin didn’t come. Rin should have sent a message if he was busy or... Something else.

He heard the news about Rin getting attacked by some of the students he had spent the night with before. He wished he could get rid of all of them himself so they won’t bother Rin anymore, but by doing that, half of the academy population would vanish.

He hurriedly put on his shirt, shaking his head, fully aware it was a bad idea.

"I’d better go find my Rin myself," he grumbled and grabbed a sword, for protection... just in case. Not his protection... Rin’s.

He went to the clinic first and just as he thought, it was locked. He tried peeping in through the window and it was empty. The lights weren’t even on.

"Did he head to his dorm?"

Lucien wondered and made his way there. He sneaked past the security and arrived at Rin’s door.

He grabbed the door knob and pulled it. The door didn’t budge.

"Seems like baby lamb is asleep," he said, rubbing his chin. "I guess I’ll see him tomo-"

Lucien froze as he lifted his hand to sniff it. He could perceive a damned familiar scent on it. It was on the door knob.

"That bastard doctor... why did he come here? To see Rin?" He wanted to barge in to ask Rin, but he stopped himself. He didn’t want to wake him up.

He exhaled deeply, trying to calm himself down.

"I guess I’ll ask him tomorrow," he said, turning to leave. But his body went stiff when he sensed a presence in Rin’s room.

An otherworldly presence. He felt it in his bones as he dashed back to the door to break it open. But, it would gather attention from other staff. He carefully picked the lock, which seemed so easy, and barged in.

(Call it the male lead’s luck)

He saw a figure sitting close to Rin, holding his hand and kissing it. Lucien stood tall and calm, but his hand on the sword hilt was tight... too tight.

"Who is that bastard?"

He grumbled and stretched his sword, the blade gleaming dangerously beneath the moonlight, pointed at the neck of something no student, staff, or Alpha should ever have to face.

A demon.

Not a summoned spirit. Not a cursed beast.

A true demon, marked by the thick, coiling black veins on its grey skin... and the horns... obsidian black, curved like they belonged to a prince of Hell.

Lucien didn’t flinch, even when he knew exactly what he was up against.

He wasn’t foolish. He was smart to know that he couldn’t win this fight. Not alone. Not even with ten men.

But the moment he heard that slurping sound, when he sensed that thing inside Rin’s room, licking his hand like some twisted lover... Lucien hadn’t cared. He had moved.

Now, he faced the consequences.

"I asked you a question," Lucien said flatly, the tip of the sword grazing the demon’s neck. "Answer it."

The demon slowly stood, straightening his massive frame. He was easily a head taller than Lucien. Built like a shadow draped in midnight.

Yet, he only smiled.

"No," the demon said, voice deep, layered like a thousand whispers behind it.

Lucien didn’t move. The hand holding the sword kept trembling.

"You broke into a student dorm and touched someone under my care. That’s enough reason to cut you down."

He raised the blade.

The demon’s red eyes sparkled.

"Try."

Lucien heard his words. It didn’t seem like an order or request. The demon was definitely teasing him but he wanted to prove himself.

"Don’t drag me to hell when I send you back!"

He spoke and lunged.

The sword sliced through the air. The demon vanished before the blade made contact with his skin and reappeared right behind him.

Lucien spun, barely catching the flicker of a grin as the demon disappeared again. Another slash. Another miss.

"I wonder," the demon mused, voice moving all around the room, "...why such a pretty Alpha like you waste his time swinging steel... when he should be curled in Rin’s bed. Or were you rejected?"

Lucien snarled, leaping onto the desk and swinging downward. He groaned angrily whenever he missed.

The demon vanished again with a mocking hum.

"You’re too loud," he whispered. "You’ll wake him."

Lucien landed on the bed, crouched beside Rin’s body. Rin shifted, groaning in his sleep, unaware of the chaos swirling around him.

The demon appeared again... right in front of Lucien.

He lifted a finger, touched Lucien’s forehead gently.

Lucien froze, like his whole body had been paralysed. He couldn’t even move his eyelids.

A sharp pressure slammed into his mind. A voice whispered deep into his thoughts.

"Next time... I’ll deal with you properly for ruining my time with him. For now, I’ll leave you in one piece. Since he’s too pretty to cry over your corpse."

Then the demon smiled wider and then vanished like smoke.

Lucien staggered back, finally able to move his body. He held his head for a brief second, wondering what kind of ability the demon used to communicate through his mind.

Telepathy?

Then he looked at the bed where Rin stirred a second time.

His crimson eyes fluttered open and locked onto Lucien.

"...What... are you doing here?"

Lucien moved even closer to him, grabbing Rin’s shoulders, inspecting his face, arms, and chest.

"Did he hurt you? Are you okay? Rin, look at me...!"

Rin shoved him, confused about what was happening.

"I’m fine! Quit touching me!"

Lucien blinked, stunned by the harshness.

"What are you even doing here with a sword?" Rin snapped, hair dishevelled, irritation bubbling in his voice.

Lucien stood back, swallowing hard. He sheathed his sword and exhaled deeply.

"There was an intruder," he said. "Something... not human. I had to protect you."

Rin scoffed, wrapping his sheet tighter around himself. "You snuck into my room because of an imaginary intruder? Really?"

Lucien’s jaw clenched.

"It wasn’t imaginary. He was just here. I saw him. He..."

"Lucien," Rin snapped. "If there really was someone here... Niblet would’ve barked."

The pup huffed beside the bed and flopped over, tail wagging slowly.

Lucien stared at Niblet and looked back at Rin. Rin raised a brow as if waiting for him to reveal the truth.

Lucien’s voice tightened.

"Don’t put your life in the paws of a dog."

Rin’s lips thinned.

"And don’t break into my room like some jealous ex. You’re a student. I’m staff. You had no right to be here."

Lucien’s heart cracked. Just a little. He took a breath and turned toward the door.

"...Fine. I’ll leave you then,"

"Thank you. Now, goodbye!"

Rin waved, watching Lucien reach the door and then... he stopped.

His eyes narrowed to the door knob and the faint scent hit his nose again.

Theron.

’That bloody scent again... Did that bastard touch...?’

He thought, as his fingers twitched.
