Chapter 110: Invader (3)

Back in the Heavenly Martial Path VRMMO, Xu Tao had once crossed paths with a mysterious figure.

An Evil Spirit—a Dual-Soul Wraith—who had targeted Henrietta and the others for some unknown reason.

No. When he briefly confronted it, he realized its target wasn’t really Henrietta’s group, but rather him. They were the ones dragged into the mess—not the other way around!

"I never expected to see you here...!" Xu Tao growled.

Of course, they were too far apart for their voices to reach each other. But that didn’t stop him from seeing the smug smile on the Wraith’s face—as if already convinced of her victory.

And he couldn’t deny that their possibility of losing was high.

First of all, they didn’t have enough people to handle 20,000 level 400 monsters at once. Second, the only ones who could take on the boss were Jehanne and him. And lastly...

"Third squad, shelter all residents in the castle!" Xu Tao barked. "And protect them there!"

They had been caught off guard. Now, they had to fight while protecting civilians, putting even more pressure on the defenders.

It’d take at least a few minutes to evacuate everyone to safety, but the enemies didn’t seem inclined to wait.

"Sir Tao, leave that giant flying snake to me!" Jehanne declared with confidence. "I think I can at least delay it. You handle the flying monsters!"

"Got it."

Jehanne was still wearing the Bunny Suit, with x2 STR and x4 AGI buffs. Thanks to that, she outpaced the enemies in speed. But when it came to harming the boss... she had her doubts.

Her STR now was roughly equivalent to level 500. But the enemy was a boss-class monster 300 levels higher. She’d be lucky to even scratch its hide, much less injure it!

As for Xu Tao, his task was even simpler—

Find a way to somehow deal with the 20,000 monsters diving at them with full force!

Other than the two of them... everyone else was practically useless at the moment. Arthur, for one, was battered like a rag. Even if his will to fight remained, his body had already raised the white flag.

’We’re way too under-leveled for this shit!’ Xu Tao cursed inwardly.

"You!" He pointed to someone on the wall. "Grab Arthur and take him to the castle too!"

Sooner or later, the castle would become the main gathering point for everyone. In short, it’d turn into a prime target.

"Arthur, keep your Holy Field active as long as you can!" Despite the situation, Xu Tao still had to rely on him. "Prove you’re not useless—protect everyone there!"

"..."

Arthur stared back with eyes full of resolve.

"I got it," he said with a nod. "As long as I’m breathing, I’ll keep the field up. So you two—don’t hold back and go wild!"

Xu Tao grinned. "Are you forgetting who you’re talking to?" he chuckled. "Don’t worry. I’ll handle things here—so you just wait."

Despite his confident words, Xu Tao wasn’t assured of victory.

The enemy numbers were simply too overwhelming. He was sure he’d need to use all his Qi to hold them off—but that would mean he’d become unable to handle the boss fight.

Their chances of winning without losses or setbacks were less than 1%!

Soon, the guard Xu Tao had pointed to carried Arthur away. Taking that as the signal, Xu Tao turned to Jehanne and nodded. "Let’s do this!"

"Yes, Sir Tao!"

The two smiled without fear.

The first to move was Xu Tao.

"Hup!"

With a wave of his fan, glowing blocks of ice formed, scattered, and hovered in midair. Strangely, they didn’t fall, suspended as if held by some invisible force—they’re made purely out of his Qi, after all.

"For starters, let me go say hi!" Jehanne spat, leaping into action.

In a blur, she jumped up, using the icy blocks as stepping stones to ascend into the sky. With her speed, within moments, she reached the incoming swarm!

SHAAAA!

The flying bug monsters—Dimensional Anomalies—emitted a high-pitched screech the moment they spotted her. Some even moved to intercept her immediately.

"Not so fast."

But a figure suddenly appeared beside them, fan in hand, walking through the sky casually. "Don’t look away—I’m your opponent!"

He waved his fan, scattering sparkling ice dust. Then, in one motion, he launched a palm strike at the chest of the nearest monster—

BAM!

—triggering an icy explosion in a wide cone, blasting out from the monster’s back.

Every monster caught in the blast zone froze solid before gradually shattering into particles—just like the icy dust he’d scattered.

"That’s a hundred, for now," he whispered, shifting his stance.

"Thanks for the path!"

Jehanne laughed, passing within an inch of him, using the frozen remains as stepping stones to continue upward toward the boss.

"No worries. Here’s some more!"

Xu Tao didn’t delay, summoning more icy blocks mid-air.

Unlike him, who had Cloud Steps to stay aloft, Jehanne had none. She relied entirely on his platforms to remain airborne.

Each one shattered after she stepped on it, but that was enough.

By the time she reached the center of the swarm, she barely needed the platforms at all—using the monsters themselves as springboards. With more footing options, she moved even faster, zipping toward her target in the blink of an eye.

"Alright, big guy! Let’s see if you can handle this...!"

Landing on the boss monster’s back, she opened with a powerful spear slap. But it barely tickled the leviathan, let alone damaged it.

"Tsk! As expected, I lack strength...!" she grumbled as she ran across its body.

She didn’t miss the Evil Spirit—the Dual-Soul Wraith—standing near the monster’s forehead with the sunset right behind, casting eerie shadows.

A woman with sickly-pale white skin, golden eyes with black sclera, and silver-white hair whipping in the wind. Her lips curled in a thick, unbothered smile.

The air around her reeked of death, making Jehanne instinctively want to avoid her.

"...!"

But in a flash, she realized that taking her—seemingly a commander of some sort—down would be a huge blow to the enemy. Jehanne poured more strength into her legs, bounding toward the Wraith’s position.

Sensing her intent, the leviathan writhed violently.

It twisted its massive body, trying to shake off the ant on its back. The motion made the Wraith turn and glare at Jehanne with murderous eyes.

"Don’t disturb me... You wench." The woman said in a low, threatening, growling voice. "Stay put, and I’ll kill you painlessly after I deal with that man."

"...Wench?"

Jehanne’s brow twitched. Even with the roaring winds, she heard that insult loud and clear.

"I am the Saint—Jehanne d’Arc! Calling me a wench will be the last mistake you ever make!"
