Taking a deep breath, Casio unclenched his tight fist. He pointed at a gunman dressed in black in the distance.
“Me?” The man pointed to himself.
Jogging over, he quickly reached Casio and Red Tooth.
“Sir, what’s the matter?”
The gunman looked ready to follow orders.
Two minutes later, everyone by the street, including Red Tooth, wore expressions of disbelief. Red Tooth found it particularly hard to believe.
“Wind Elephant, you’re saying you had a conversation with me upstairs just now and ran into Walker on the first floor?” He glanced at Casio. “You’re not hallucinating, are you?”
“I’m sure it wasn’t a hallucination,” Casio promised, carefully scanning their surroundings before meeting Red Tooth’s gaze. “Even if you were hallucinating, I wouldn’t be. You should know that I wouldn’t joke about this kind of thing.” His face was utterly serious.
“Not a hallucination…” Red Tooth touched his beard unconsciously.
“Could it be the legendary ghost of Mansa Village?”
The tall, skinny gunman suggested.
“There’s no such thing as ghosts. Don’t talk nonsense,”
Red Tooth glared at the gunman, then continued. “Rather than some vague, elusive ghost, I believe it’s the Sand Dust Organization trying to scare us with unknown methods.”
Casio didn’t respond to this, his expression slowly returning to calm. His gaze was as cold and gloomy as before. He spoke slowly.
“Let’s not waste time here, let’s go to the next location. I have a bad feeling about this, just like before.”
Several minutes later.
The group came upon a residence owned by a wealthy family.
It was laid out like a miniature manor with a slightly high perimeter wall around the outside and ornamental trees planted inside. They had grown immensely due to decades of neglect.
The branches ruffled the top of the white enclosure wall, creating a faint, tearing sound in the breeze.
Red Tooth led the way and everyone entered through the rusty wrought-iron gate.
They saw a four-storey grayish-white villa as they looked around in the dim light. The façade bore the signs of being exposed to wind and rain, but it was plain that it had once been brightly and richly colored.
The iron lamp brackets on the building were also badly corroded.
The front cross windows opened to both sides. The joints had rusted shut, and they teetered in the wind as if ready to fall at any moment.
Thankfully, the whole villa had not been overrun by creepers like the other houses, making for a fairly pleasant sight.
Everyone entered the first floor of the villa, shouting once again the names of the Assassination Department’s stationed members. But Casio’s ominous premonition came true. One of the members had disappeared.
Only their shouts echoed in the hollow hall.
Reaching the second floor, they found the villa was even larger within than it had appeared from outside. The second floor had numerous corridors and countless rooms.
Although covered in dust, they were all mostly intact.
“Squeak~”
Casio looked at the grayish-white wooden door in front of him and slowly pushed it open to enter. Inside was a scene just as he expected: the floor was covered in thick dust. With every step he took, a footprint would be left behind, accompanied by a squeak.
The room had an old-fashioned layout, with a bed, a wardrobe against the wall, a bookshelf, and a decorative vase.
A spider web filled the entire gap of the window.
Casio looked outside through the gaps in the web.
There was nothing unusual.
He turned back around, then abruptly froze.
Before him was a grayish-white room door, its surface adorned with blurred floral patterns, rather old-fashioned in style.
There was nothing especially strange or interesting about it.
But, Casio distinctly remembered not closing the door when he entered the room. However, he turned around to find the door shut, without making any sound of friction on its hinges.
When he had pushed the door open, the wooden door had squeaked…
Casio stepped forward and grabbed the dusty door handle, gently tugging it. It wouldn’t budge.
He furrowed his eyebrows and suddenly applied more force to his palm.
With a great pull that far exceeded the strength of a normal adult, the door handle snapped off, leaving half of an ellipse in his hand.
Casio stepped back, his dark face squishing the door handle into sawdust. His already not insignificant fists expanded inch by inch, muscle layers stacked like rock on his bare forearm.
“Playing tricks, open up.”
With a firm step forward, he punched out.
His fist slammed into the door with a loud bang, causing the wall to shake.
A white shower of wall plaster fell from the room ceiling.
Boom!
With another punch, his fist hammered down like a mallet.
Crack!
The wooden door finally cracked under the onslaught, letting out a hoarse cry of despair. The door panel shattered and split in two.
Casio, clenching his fists, stormed out of the room quickly.
In the corridor, Red Tooth looked at him with a startled expression from a meter away, seemingly frightened by the aura that Casio exuded.
“What happened?” Red Tooth asked, stepping two steps closer.
“When I entered this room, the door closed on its own, I think it might have been…” Breaking off abruptly, Casio turned to look back at the room, finding the wooden door, whole and undamaged, open behind him.
“How can that be? It was clearly smashed by me just now…”
Casio turned back around, a chill running through his heart. Red Tooth, he’d been talking to just now, had disappeared, leaving the corridor barren and deserted.
