Chapter 89: Kora’s speculation
Lisa held the papers in her hand and began to speak, her voice was loud and clear, "I have been investigating the Insurance and the Nesman company has been cooperating. For the first case, the Michael Grills and Bar. Only one of their victims had life insurance, he had taken two actually and the beneficiary of the two life insurance is the other victim, Jack Micheal."
"You mean that there would be no death benefit to Mary, his first child." Sarah asked.
"Is Mary his stepchild?" Draco sounded upset even more than usual.
"No. Mary is the contingent beneficiary, she is to receive the money if Jack is unable to."
"So Mary is getting two payouts? How much is the money?"
"100,000 dollars. In the second case, the entire family had life insurance and the beneficiary was the other person. The father wrote down the son, the son wrote the wife and the father and the wife wrote down the husband. We can cancel death benefits as a reason for the arson and murder."
"Maybe it is the insurance company, they get to keep the money right." Draco whispered his breath right next to Ravi’s ears.
"You don’t need to lean so close. I can hear you clearly." His voice was cold, it had been cold since this morning. And the cause of it was being oblivious, nodding at Lisa.
Lisa also heard it and her smile grew even larger. She looked at Draco and cleared her throat, "If the contingent beneficiary has also passed away, then the death benefit would be paid to the policyholder’s estate. It would be then distributed according to the policy holder’s will or according to the intestate laws of succession if there is no will."
Her gaze was directly telling Draco, I am smart and as for you, you are a huge fool.
Ravi could hear Draco’s teeth-gritting next to him.
Arlen nodded, "Good job, Officer Johnson. Officer West."
Ravi turned to look at him, "Yes, Captain Sinclair." His voice was cold causing Arlen to look at him innocently.
Ravi broke away from his gaze and he connected to the projection screen. As he spoke, the victim identification and information appeared on the projection screen, "We have confirmed the identity of the three victims killed in the fire. The first victim is Robert Johnson, a native of Davenport. His wife died and he is 54 years old. He worked in an Electrical company but he retired ten years ago and opened an Electronic store which he closed two years ago." The photo was of a simple-looking man with round cheeks and bright eyes. It was difficult to connect him to the charred corpse that they brought from the penthouse.
"His son is Daniel Johnson and he is one of the best doctors at the Davenport Hospital. He studied at Springfield University and graduated top of his class. He is 32 years old and he married last year. The last victim is Sarah..."
He looked up at Sarah for a second before looking down and continuing, "Sarah Johnson, she is a financial Analyst at the ABC bank. She is 28 years old." Ravi frowned, continued, "I tried to cross-check whether there is something that linked the two families together but they are in two different wealth brackets."
He looked at the document in front of him, he had not gotten enough information.
It was Draco’s turn to present his findings and he stood up, "I and the Sergeant went to the workplace of the Johnson but everyone had something good to say about them. Especially Daniel, they love him at the hospital, he is kind, and he is filial. He is perfect."
"Nobody is perfect, dig a ....
There was a knock on the door and Karo came in, there was a huge excited smile on her face, "Am I interrupting anything? Captain Arlen, I found something exciting."
Ravi’s lips instantly moved into a thin line but he followed the rest of the team into the Forensic Office. The Forensic Lab had been a storage room but since Arlen came, he had badgered the Chief and they started to transform the storage room into a lab.
The first thing that Ravi noticed was that the office was larger than theirs and five people shared their office while only one woman had the entire office. There was an empty lab in the office with blaring lights shining on it.
The office had sparse equipment but all Ravi could see was the glaring fridge and the coffee machine that Arlen had gotten for her this morning.
"The fire forensic officer sent me some materials and videos earlier this morning but it was not enough so I went to the scene myself." She opened the fridge and took out a bottle of water before looking at them.
"Officer Adams, can you help me set up these pictures on the board?"
Sarah went over to help her and within five minutes, they were done.
Kora faced them, she pointed at the first picture, it was a blue and white curtain with little leaves dotted around thin. "When this kind of synthetic fiber curtain catches fire, it melts into flaming droplets, splattering like sparks onto sofas and carpets, igniting them. It would climb upward, the smoke spreading through the air vents, eventually igniting the ceiling which would collapse and set the sofa ablaze. The most intense fire damage would be the ceiling."
Everyone had a confused expression on their face but still nodded.
"But that was not what happened, the fire started from the sofa, the sofa was instantly set ablaze, then spread through the curtain and then the ceilings, that is why the marking here form a V-shaped pattern around the sofa." Her eyes were all but glowing, "Do you get it, this is so amazing, isn’t it?"
Arlen took a deep breath, "Kora, what is so amazing?"
Seeing that everyone was not sharing her excitement, her face returned to the cold mask it previously was and she started putting down the pictures,
"We have a mutant with the ability to control fire."
