Chapter 122: Chestnut?
Chapter 122: Chestnut?
Ravi processed the fish quickly. He scraped off the scales and carefully removed the gall and rinsed it under cold water before patting them dry with paper towels.
"Turn them every two to three minutes." Ravi said as he looked over to Sage who was watching the corn intently.
"Two or three."
"Three minutes. Set a timer." He said, recalling the other’s meal.
He sprinkled salt and pepper on the fish skin and placed it on the grill. Arlen looked over from Sage’s side and smiled, "Do you need any help? I don’t have anything to do here."
"You can help Asher make drinks."
"Make drinks?" Both Asher and Arlen asked at the same time and then looked at each other before looking away.
Sage signaled so much with his eyes to Asher that Ravi wanted to pull him aside and ask him sincerely, ’do you think you are being discreet?’
Arlen might have thought the same thing because he looked at him with a smile in his eyes Causing Ravi’s lips to twitch.
He had not marinated the fish as he should have but that does not mean that it would not turn out delicious.
He watched the heat, seeing the white skin of the fish charred slightly as it began to curl up, he used the brush to spread some of the sauce on the side. The chili powder and cumin instantly caused the fragrance to increase exponentially.
Just in case it might not be as delicious, Ravi decided to make a dipping sauce. He added some chili, minced garlic, cumin, oil, and some soy sauce.
"So delicious." Sage said, his eyes moving from the corn to the fish.
"Watch your food, if you are distracted, then it will burn."
Sage pursed his lips, the first day they had met he had ignored him, now he was talking to him. He did not want to listen. In his mind, he began to recall every ’slight’ that
"Sage! Flip it!"
Sage blinked and looked at the corn which was quickly moving past charred and he instantly flipped it, his ears burning red.
"Sorry." He muttered quietly.
Ravi cocked his ears, "What was that?"
"Sorry! I said sorry!" The teenager screamed and Ravi chuckled, before he lowered his head in embarrassment. When did he pick up this bad habit of teasing others?
Using the chopsticks, he felt that the fish had been cooked completely through. The skin was now a crisp, golden yellow filling the air with a sweet and delicious aroma.
He almost teleported to get the plates when he remembered where he was and held himself.
"Sage. Go in and tell them to get the plates. The food is ready. Oh and ask Asher to get the chestnuts in the shopping bag."
He soon began to dish the food in individual plates and after Malik had gotten a mat from who knows where, everyone settled down to have dinner.
The fish was fat and delicious, with a crispy skin and a very soft interior. Everyone was quiet as they ate.
Ravi placed his chopsticks down, "Even if you rush eating and choke to death. None of you three would get the last fish." He gave Asher, Arlen, and Sage a hard look before he went back to his food, ignoring Arlen’s affronted loom of being looped with
Compared to the tender fish, Ravi preferred the sweet corn. He raised it up with his chopsticks.
"What is it?"
"You are the only person I have seen who eats corn like that."
"Like what?" He placed his food down, took a sip of the watermelon juice and looked at the teenager who had already cleared his plate and was eyeing the grill with the chestnuts.
"Isn’t it weird eating it with chopsticks?"
"It is called table manners, Sage." Malik said, causing a round of laughter to sound around the mat.
Ravi sighed helplessly and continued eating but he was unable to endure their gaze anymore. It was strange, he did not care what others thought of him. He took the corn by the fingers and bit into it.
"If you are going to eat it like this, please eat it with a chopstick." Sage murmured, not able to stand the look of him punching the side of the corn with two fingers.
Arlen chuckled and Ravi’s eyes went to him, his ears turning red.
"That is it. Everyone just turn around, let me eat." Ravi said exasperated.
Asher was the only obedient child in the world as he is the only one that turned back. Ravi smiled and finished the corn before giving him the rest of his grilled fish that he had barely touched.
"Hey! That is unfair." Sage said, chuckling at the smug look before standing up and packing the rest of the plates, "Thanks Ravi, the food was delicious."
"Extremely so. This is the best meal I have had in a long time." Malik said as he stood up.
Both Asher and Ravi ate solely so everyone waited for him before Ravi shared the chestnuts for deserts.
"Sage and Asher, The two of you should follow me." Malik said after the two teenagers had cleared the place for dinner.
Asher looked at Ravi and Arlen who were standing close to each other and he looked at Sage. They had a deal after all.
Sage opened his mouth but felt Malik’s gaze on him and closed his mouth, "Happy to help."
Dragging the Asher that had a betrayed look on his face, the three of them left.
Ravi could not wait for the three of them to leave but now he was left alone, he felt nervous.
The last time they had been left alone together, he had whispered his most secret words.
"I was wrong. He is much kinder than I expected." He said looking in the direction where Malik had taken the two children.
Ravi shook his head, "No, you are right. He is as crazy and dangerous as you said." He could still recall that madness and obsession in those green eyes, "But he won’t harm them."
Arlen nodded. He might not trust the Professor but he trusted Ravi. Completely.
"So why do you think the children were trying to separate us all evening?"
Ravi’s heart pounded. He peeled off a round and plump chestnut with light movements."Chestnut?"
