Chapter 749: 745

Tang Ye’s mind wasn’t on the masses of corpses below. An increasing sense of unease lingered in his heart, the premonition of calamity impending left him furrowing his brows in contemplation.

"What on earth could still pose a threat to me?"

As Tang Ye was deep in thought, an enormous army marched out from within the Qinshan Base, unseen by him. This army, almost six thousand strong, comprised various factions, most of it under the control of the United District’s seven major committees.

They donned a multitude of armors, each group distinctly separate, each autonomous, bearing the banner "Defend Qinshan till the end!" as they marched towards a certain direction in full vigor.

The banners they carried stirred a surge of passion in all the survivors who saw them, though nobody really understood what their aim was.

What was evident was that the massive particle beam cannons were for fending off the zombies.

"How come only so few soldiers from Bright Moon City have shown up?"

At the forefront of the army, Li Songhua frowned at troops who were more of a mere squad than an army. They were clad in black exoskeleton armor, their uniforms adorned with crescent emblems that imparted a sacred presence. Normally so ferocious, they now appeared as ordinary as civilians.

They were soldiers from Bright Moon City. Unlike the troops from the United District, which comprised hundreds from every district at minimum, only less than fifty soldiers from Bright Moon City showed up at Qinshan Base. It must be noted that the operation was proposed by the city’s mayor, Su Sigui.

As the main planner, it was surprising that they sent so few soldiers. Had it not been for unpredictable circumstances, and the United District gathering their major forces together, Li Songhua would have already questioned Su Sigui in his rage.

"Humph, with such little bait, how large a fish can we secure?" An army leader from the United District commented in a sarcastic tone, his deep-seated prejudice against Bright Moon City’s formidable mayor due to her gender evident.

In his eyes, women were somewhat of a novelty relegated to the peaceful periods when they could advocate human rights. When chaos and disorder reigned, as in the current times, they were no more than exotic trading commodities. The end of the world had been inching closer, silently reshaping the worldview of many over the past five years.

The soldiers of Bright Moon City seemed to have heard him. An icy voice rose, "Our mayor is here in person."

At this remark from a soldier of Bright Moon City, the others who were about to join in the mockery immediately sealed their lips. A dozen soldiers from Bright Moon City moved forward, chests proudly puffed and relaxed their stance atop the military vehicle.

Not long after, a survivor rushed out from the crowd in the street and headed straight towards the military vehicle where the Bright Moon City crew was. As a response, the vehicle stopped. It seemed that the soldiers from Bright Moon City knew this survivor.

The survivor jogged up to the vehicle and exchanged a few words with the soldier; it was unclear what he was saying. Soon, another soldier stepped down and opened the car’s door. The survivor nodded, bowing respectfully to someone inside the car.

This gesture seemed to signal approval, and the survivor entered the vehicle.

Inside, it was indeed Su Sigui!

"Mayor, Li Henian has been led away by someone named Wu."

As he spoke, admiration shone in the survivor’s eyes. Who could have imagined that an average individual could be used by Su Sigui so perfectly?

Unintentional deception had successfully led the horrifyingly powerful Level 6 New Human, Li Henian, to the defense wall down south.

And the one who bore the surname Wu was the soldier who had pleaded Tang Ye for assistance. He had not lied; his intention was to genuinely seek Tang Ye’s aid to minimize casualties, and he bore no ulterior motive.

This soldier, bearing the surname Wu, had been a pitiful survivor in the wastelands. Su Sigui had chanced upon him and noted certain exceptional qualities in him. In time, he became a soldier in Qinshan Base.

Days ago, he had an audience with Su Sigui, pleading for her to help the unfortunate yet valiant soldiers. Su Sigui did not agree to his appeal, instead advising him, "I can’t help you. If you are truly out of options, you might want to seek assistance from Li Henian."

"The Chairman of the Peace Party?"

"Yes."

"Could he really help us?"

"Doing this is like gambling. I don’t know Li Henian well. If he has a semblance of pity left in him, he would definitely help you. If not..."

"I understand. Whether he will help or not, I don’t mind. I cannot change this world. I can only do as much as I am capable of. Mayor, if possible...after my death, I hope you can use your strength to change this world."

"Perhaps."

...

Through the window, Su Sigui’s gaze was set on the gun-ridden south. A smile lay on her face.

She murmured, "Someone who’s both righteous and malicious? This is indeed a rare sight."

As she got off, the moment she had made her way out, she eyed the army leader who commented earlier. A chill ran down his spine, but it was just that gaze. In her eyes, that army leader was nothing more than a buffoon.

"Mayor..." The high-ranking officers of Bright Moon City inside the car looked at her with confusion as she got down.

Su Sigui stretched a little, smiling as she responded to the officer, "I’ll be taking care of other matters. Keep an eye on these people. When it’s time to fight against the Peace Party...remember, find somewhere to stir up trouble. If you don’t need to fight against them, don’t."

"Ah? Why?"

The officers looked at each other baffled, feeling confused.

"Do as I say. If you resist, none of you might be able to return to the City of Bright Moon alive."

The officers couldn’t understand the reasons, but the longer they had known Su Sigui, the more they understood something—whatever this woman said, no matter how absurd, must be obeyed. Otherwise, something terrible would happen.

"Alright, we understand."

"Go ahead."

Su Sigui slammed the car door shut with a loud "thud," her face lighting up with an increasingly bright smile as she watched the vehicle departing slowly.

"By now, Tang Fu should still be with the Peace Party." A fierce determination flashed in her eyes. This man’s power was truly terrifying, most likely none of the power-based zombies could compare to him. Su Sigui still acutley remembers the power behind just one of his punches.

From the beginning, she had never considered wiping out the Peace Party entirely. She simply thought that the Peace Party in its current state was not ripe enough for an alliance, and allowing it to continue growing would pose a threat to herself.

What she had to do was merely weaken the Peace Party.

And ensure that Li Henian wouldn’t die.
