Chapter 748: 744

If the danger doesn’t come from the zombie horde, nor from the soldiers defending the zombie wall, then it would be unreasonable. There was rumored to be a Level 6 zombie within the horde, but no one knew if that was true or not.

However, Li Songhua was suspected to have brought the Dragon Slayer Sword to the zombie wall, presumably to kill the Level 6 zombie. If Tang Ye were to go there, his main enemies would still be the horde of zombies outside. Even if Li Songhua hated him, he couldn’t possibly point the Dragon Slayer Sword at him the moment they met, could he?

Something felt off, but Tang Ye didn’t know exactly where the danger was coming from. However, danger and opportunity often go hand in hand. Faced with the unknown, Tang Ye couldn’t resist taking a closer look.

He glanced at Ah Fu and said, "You and Old Xu go back first. I’ll go take a look."

"Oh." Ah Fu took a moment to size up the soldier leaving with Xu Haishui, leaving only Tang Ye and a few soldiers on the scene.

Upon hearing Tang Ye’s agreement, the soldiers were nearly brought to tears with gratitude. They knelt on the ground, thanking him profusely, only to be quickly helped up by Tang Ye. From the looks of it, these soldiers still harbored a sense of justice in their hearts.

"Let’s go."

"Yes, yes, yes!" The soldiers nodded eagerly, leading Tang Ye towards the zombie-defending wall.

When they arrived at the wall, Tang Ye’s brow furrowed sightly at the sight of the soldiers on it. For some reason, he felt that their numbers were lackluster.

The soldiers manning firepower on the wall and those carrying out logistical work below totaled to only a few thousand. The remainder were hastily assembled, barely making a 10 thousand-man force.

"What about the others? Shouldn’t there be more?"

The soldier knew that many hadn’t come, but unaware of the actual situation, he could only shake his head and say, "I don’t know. It looks like the others had more important things to do, so they didn’t come."

"Alright then."

Tang Ye nodded, feeling an increasing sense of unease.

As he climbed the zombie wall, soldiers parted to let him pass, glancing curiously at him. Upon explanation from the soldier beside him, they began to show him respect.

They never expected the president of the Peace Party, Li, to come and assist in fending off the zombies, which elevated Tang Ye’s status in their eyes.

Tang Ye climbed to the top of the wall, looking down from under his furrowed brows. There was a gaping hole in the wall where a massive force had bashed through, revealing the steel structure within.

A few hundred meters ahead, a group of new-generation soldiers stood at the ready, wearing zombie-resistant armor and carrying zombie-slaying weapons to fend off the zombies advancing beyond the firepower net.

The scene was a bloodbath, with zombie corpses piled waist-high amid the crumbling buildings in front of the zombie wall. The flames burned fiercely, filling the air with a nauseating stench.

"Danger! Two Level 4 zombies have appeared!"

The solider who was on lookout duty yelled as he peered through his binoculars. Everyone turned to see two gigantic Level 4 zombies leaping out from the pile of zombies in front of the ruined buildings.

Both of them roared, their bodies covered in scales of a peculiar color. They leaped from the buildings, stirring up dust clouds as they landed and rolled on the ground towards the zombie wall.

The soldiers shuddered. The surrounding officers quickly issued orders: "Focus firepower! Attack the two Level 4 zombies!"

"Yes, sir!"

As the soldiers responded and redirected their weapons towards the two Level 4 zombies, another chilling scream from some of the soldiers atop the wall echoed. A Level 3 zombie bird had appeared out of nowhere and flown off with two of their comrades clasped in its beak.

In the sky, more shrill bird calls could be heard!

"Shit, here they come again!"

The distracting beeping of the anti-life matter detector was back, and dozens of zombie birds circled in the sky. Judging by their size, they were far from ordinary zombies.

The readings on the screen of the anti-life matter detector fluctuated between Level 3 and Level 2.

"They’re coming down!"

Since noticing the zombie birds, all eyes had been on them. Seeing them swoop down, several soldiers cried out.

Zombie birds were among the most troublesome types of zombies because they could fly and were extremely agile. Whether one could hit them in the air was dependent on their numbers. A large flock meant shooting blindly could yield hits, but also present higher risks. If there were few zombie birds, hitting one would be down to luck.

The zombie birds dove quickly, their sharp beaks opening and closing as foul pus dripped from them. Their pale, listless eyes glimmered with a murderous light.

Their shrill cries left the soldiers below in a state of chaos.

"Hurry! Prepare the electromagnetic rail gun!"

"Three! No..."

There wasn’t enough time. The soldiers from the United District hadn’t managed to adjust the angle of the electromagnetic railgun when the flock of zombie birds arrived.

"Damn it, it’s all Level 3. Get ready! Dodge!"

"We’re running low on firepower, the zombies are getting closer!"

"What about those two Level 4 zombies?"

The scene was chaotic, with reports coming in from all directions. But soon, the atmosphere quieted down.

The zombie birds were quick and had excellent reaction times. However, Tang Ye was even faster. As the leading Level 3 zombie bird was about to reach a soldier, Tang Ye suddenly produced a bloody flying knife. With a flick of his wrist, several more knives flew out with precision, severing the rotten heads of all the zombie birds.

"Thank you...thank you!"

"Phew~, thank you!"

The soldiers sighed in relief, having narrowly escaped death. They bowed their heads to Tang Ye from afar in gratitude.

The officers in the distance also saluted Tang Ye. Returning the salute, he proceeded to issue commands.

"First, attack the high-level zombies, then have the remaining teams halt the advancing horde!"

After killing a few Level 3 zombie birds, Tang Ye didn’t make any other moves. He leaned on the cement barricade, fixated on the endless, constantly replenishing horde of zombies below. It seemed as if the zombies would never cease. Moreover, they were not even at their densest yet. The true terror was yet to come!
