Chapter 568: Chapter 565 Paradise 1_1
"What was it that took her? Where did it go?"
Tang Ye suspected that Bai Xinran was taken by some formidable beast and that Qiongli and the others were too weak to save her.
"We don’t know. Suddenly there was a flying dragon in the sky, when we went to investigate, we heard her scream, and then she disappeared."
Qiongli sobbed, choking out the words to Tang Ye.
"Where was she before?" Tang Ye asked.
"Over there."
Qiongli pointed to where Bai Xinran had been sitting before she disappeared. Tang Ye walked over and asked, "So you mean you didn’t see who took her?"
"No."
Qiongli shook her head. Tang Ye sniffed, noticing that there was no trace of anyone or any zombies other than the people present. His brow furrowed.
Bai Xinran left a deep impression on Tang Ye. Back in Lin City, her act of sharing a pancake led to his fond feelings for her.
Seeing Tang Ye’s furrowed brow, clearly clueless, Qiongli hurriedly said, "Earlier, there was a strange noise coming from those small woods over there."
"Over there?" Tang Ye pointed.
"Yes, just now Lin Junhong went to check, but didn’t find anything."
"Then I’ll go take a look, you guys stay here."
Tang Ye, puzzled, advanced toward the woods. There was no smell here other than those of the present company.
He was supposed to find Bai Xinran, but it was uncertain whether or not she had been taken into the woods in the first place.
In the woods, Tang Ye opened up all his senses, looking for any unfamiliar humans or zombies. However, after a round trip all the way to the small canyon behind, he found nothing but a few wild rabbits.
After a while, Tang Ye came back. As soon as he arrived, Qiongli anxiously approached him.
"Did you find her?"
He shook his head. Qiongli’s face fell instantly. With an "Oh", she returned to her former position. Her hand listlessly played with a burnt twig on the ground, no one touched the steaming hot water next to her.
Tang Ye wasn’t sure how to comfort her, but he knew Qiongli wasn’t dense. She was just blaming herself for Bai Xinran’s disappearance. He reasoned that she would come to her senses after a while.
Indeed, ten minutes later, she seemed to have gathered her thoughts. The possibility of Bai Xinran being alive was meager, but there were still people who were alive, and if Bai Xinran knew about it, she wouldn’t want them to plung into an abyss for her.
After all, the present situation was grim, Li Henian hadn’t revealed what was happening with the zombies. If a horde surged over, it would be too late to run.
Finally, Qiongli stood up, holding back her grief, and said lightly, "Alright, let’s go."
"Hum."
Ma Zhen responded. Little Nannan in her arms seemed to sense Qiongli’s sadness, stretching out a little hand towards her. Seeing this, Qiongli smiled, picked her up tightly and glanced at Tang Ye, who was puffing away on his cigarette.
The current Qiongli reminded him of himself, stuck in a small room with the zombie beasts, powerless. Thankfully, Qiongli and the others were safe, she took good care of Nannan. But now, Bai Xinran was missing, and he didn’t even know where to start looking.
He felt helpless.
Meanwhile, Lin Junhong sat by the road, holding his gun and staring dazedly, everyone was wondering why he was acting this way.
They got into the car and headed back, the journey oppressive in its silence. After leaving Jinhe City, the group usually conversed in the car, but the mood was exceptionally heavy now.
The snowfall grew heavier, the sky was cloaked in rolling dark clouds, zombie-infested trees, withered and yellow, lined the road, and desolation permeated the scenery. Nannan caressed Qiongli’s face and comforted in a babbling voice, "Don’t be sad Auntie, Xinran will be okay."
Qiongli patted her head, the next second, Nannan’s next words stunned everyone, "I saw what took Xinran—it was a big spider, this big!"
She gestured with her hands. Though her description didn’t exactly correspond with the creature’s actual form, everyone’s attention was on her now.
"That monster said Xinran is its princess, and it wanted to take her away."
"What? Where...where did it take her?"
Being suddenly given a clue by Nannan, Qiongli got excited. Perhaps her urgency had frightened Nannan, who pouted and stared at Qiongli with wide, innocent eyes.
Realizing her tone was too harsh, Qiongli quickly comforted, "Okay, okay, Auntie didn’t mean it, could you please tell me where Xinran was taken to?"
Just as Nannan was about to speak, suddenly there was a "bam"—the car window next to Ma Zhen shattered instantly. She instinctively ducked. Tang Ye glanced over and saw a gang of weapon-wielding bikers on the rock wall, shouting and following their car.
"Get down!"
Qiongli yelled. The bikers were never interested in people, only the supplies on the people. They rarely left survivors and wouldn’t hesitate to shoot at this range!
Ma Zhen and Lin Junhong, obviously not knowing what to do in this situation, were now in panic. Tang Ye’s eyes flashed with rage. The bikers were like pesky flies, not a threat to him, but annoying nonetheless.
Just as he was about to stop the car and slaughter the bikers, another group of people emerged from the slope on the other side.
Tang Ye thought they were also bikers, but their actions in the next second left him confounded. The bikers on the rock wall seemed equally astounded seeing them. After a while, they stopped attacking Tang Ye and the others and shifted their aim toward the other survivors.
"Kill them all!"
The leading biker yelled. After he finished shouting, a string of bullets whizzed past his head, causing him to break into a cold sweat.
Looking down, it was Lin Junhong who was shooting from the car. Without saying two words, the leading man aimed back with a burst of fire!
Ah!
A bullet traveling at high speed pierced his shoulder. Lin Junhong screamed in pain. Seeing this, Qiongli angrily said, "What were you trying to prove?"
Lin Junhong cast a resentful glance at the bikers without speaking. At this moment, Tang Ye stopped the car, watching the battle unfolding between the bikers and the other survivors.
