Chapter 553: Chapter 550 Kill the Bald Ghost_1
In the midst of monotonous days, the mere act of looking outside at the scenery seemed to bring enjoyment—an emotion few could comprehend, as it could not be experienced within the peaceful society. However, in this post-apocalyptic world, Bai Xinran, found solace in this very notion.
Her eyes glowed with a radiance reminiscent of the light from physical theories—dazzling despite her dirty face and greasy, disheveled hair. Nothing could hide the glow in her eyes.
Qiongli squinted her eyes and observed the girl in a school uniform look outside the window which seemed to arouse a similar sentiment within her.
Qiongli walked over and joined her, peering outside, but cautious of the rules, they refrained from looking at the streets, as that’s where the creatures they could only see but not fully comprehend, lurked!
Seeing that no harm had befallen them, the woman, reassured, withdrew her gun and silently retreated.
In the room, there were two windows. The one Qiongli and Bai Xinran were looking out of faced the broad Qulong River.
Past the glistening surface of the river, they could see the derelict old vessels floating about. The river, artificially widened, stretched as far as 100 meters in breadth. Across the river, they could see the other side of Jinhe City filled with towering buildings and gigantic, evolved plants barely visible.
The sight that met their eyes—an amalgam of desolate beauty consisting of the buildings on the side and the scenery across the river—it was a sight available only in such a post-apocalyptic world, devoid of humans.
The two were drawn in, and after a while, they moved to the other window and tore a slit in the newspaper to take a peek. This window offered a view of the crowded buildings in Jinhe City.
No matter how you looked at it, the scenery here never changed. Eventually, they became tired of the sight. Qiongli turned her gaze away from the window after a while, approached the bed, and decided to soothe Nannan, who was restless.
Just then, the woman who had just left came back in with a bowl of mashed porridge in her hands. Just as she was about to speak, Bai Xinran exclamed in surprise.
"Auntie, look! What is that?"
The woman and Qiongli jumped, fearing she had spotted one of those creatures. However, they quickly realized that Bai Xinran was pointing at something other than a monster. Qiongli swiftly moved towards the window to see what Bai Xinran was pointing at.
They saw a shadowy figure flying in the air resembling a human. The figure was less than five hundred meters away, just close enough to make out some details.
Under normal circumstances, a figure of this sort would be classified as a zombie or a human, however, this figure seemed to be wearing clean clothing, appearing humanlike. The odd thing was the numerous long, brownish-green tentacles studded with barbs trailing from its back!
Just how long were they? They couldn’t tell due to the distance, but they were long!
So long, so very long!
The shadow rose to a height of about a hundred meters in the air, and its numerous tentacles trailed behind, somewhat resembling a grand cloak.
Unsure of what it was up to, the two women watched as it raised one hand and the countless tentacles on its back stood straight, as if they were blades!
Whoosh!
The shadow directed its raised tentacles towards a skyscraper nearby. Astonishingly, the force of the impact caused the top part of the skyscraper to explode into a cloud of green liquid, splitting the building in two. The sharpness of the tentacles was terrifying!
Boom!
A thunderous sound followed as half of the skyscraper was chopped away and descended straight onto the petrified gas station nearby.
The next moment, everything in front of their eyes turned white as a plume of fire spread out. It wasn’t too large, but within a few seconds, flames several dozen times larger engulfed the area, spiraling upwards as a fiery tornado, the intense heat of which could be felt even from their distance.
The faces of Qiongli and Bai Xinran stung from the heat, before they heard the terrifying roar of the monsters being torched below.
Then came the shockwave. One moment they had been standing by the window, the next they were flung against the wall.
Qiongli was fine, being a Level 3 advanced human after all. But poor, slender Bai Xinran couldn’t bear the impact. She spat out a mouthful of blood and immediately fainted.
As for the woman, the bowl of porridge she was carrying was spilled all over the place. Fortunately, she happened to be standing near the bed and hit the wall, so she wasn’t seriously hurt. Nannan was probably injured though, as she suddenly burst out crying.
All this happened so abruptly that everyone was taken aback. They felt as if their world was spinning, and then they were inexplicably thrown out. Just as few survivors were regaining their composure, they heard a voice that seemed to come from a divine being from the heavens.
"Kill those fucking Bald Ghosts for me!"
It was a voice both low and hoarse, carrying with it an intimidating presence. This was followed by a multitude of booming roars and the sound of some metallic object striking the ground.
The entrance door on the ground floor was unscrewed by the shockwave. The entire door collapsed outwards at the slightest touch, revealing the surroundings to the survivors.
Qiongli rubbed her head. The glass windows in the room were shattered, letting in sunshine. She picked up the crying Nannan, glanced at Bai Xinran with worry in her eyes, but after ensuring that none of them were in immediate danger, she walked towards the window.
"What on earth just happened?"
"Who made that voice?"
"Don’t look outside!"
The startled survivors downstairs shouted, but by this time they had already seen what was happening outside. However, it seemed no harm had come to them.
Qiongli looked at the bisected building. Everything that had just happened had been shocking, but now, the shadow that did the deed had disappeared. The streets below were filled with the chorus of creature roars, the sound of metal colliding echoing from all directions.
"Auntie..."
Bai Xinran woke up and called out in a weak voice. Qiongli rushed over to help her sit up.
"Are you alright?"
"I’m fine, just a bit... cough, cough..."
Before she could finish speaking, Bai Xinran coughed up some blood, clearly having suffered internal injuries. Qiongli cradled her in her arms, patting her gently in an attempt to comfort her.
"What’s happening outside?"
"Something strange is going on outside, you should rest for now." Qiongli attempted to put Bai Xinran to bed, but her eyes were filled with anxiety. The sudden turn of events had left her feeling uneasy.
Was this place still safe?
Having experienced so much upheaval, she was now yearning for a stable home, not a life spent constantly running from one place to another. So many people had died along the way, and she didn’t know if she would be next. Neither Bai Xinran nor Nannan deserved to suffer any misfortune.
Bai Xinran struggled a bit, obviously not wanting to stay in bed.
"Auntie, I want to go take a look outside."
With that, she made her way to the window and peered outside.
For some reason, that shadow figure she saw seemed to be... familiar.
