Chapter 552: Chapter 549: Looking out of the Window_1
"I’d be surprised if this stuff wasn’t revolting."
One person glanced at Qiongli as if looking at a fool before lazily responding. Another man then walked over and commented, "This child is really cute. She’s definitely going to grow up to be a stunning beauty!"
Qiongli smiled but did not respond, seemingly satisfied with the man’s remark, she stroked Nannan’s head.
"By the way, your room is on the fifth floor. Someone will bring you food later."
"Thank you."
Qiongli and Bai Xinran gratefully responded in unison, although they were weary as this was their first encounter with such kind survivors after leaving the shelter. Their previous encounters with survivors were always twisted, which is why being amidst this group of decent survivalists felt like a breath of fresh air.
"No need to thank us, we are all family here. The only way we can survive this is by sticking together!"
"Yes, yes, yes."
Qiongli replied repeatedly. She was feeling slightly different. Holding Nannan and following the man, she and Bai Xinran reached the fifth floor, where they entered their room.
"Remember, never look outside. Don’t uncover any of the newspapers stuck on the windows. Yes, it’s boring here, but there’s nothing more important than survival."
The man’s name was Fu Rongcai. Despite initially loathing them for adding extra burden to the already low food supplies, his overall impression of Qiongli was decent. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have let his men save them. He probably acted out of frustration, after all, predicting human nature in a post-apocalyptic world is a tricky task.
His caution was quite understandable.
Though the room wasn’t big, it wasn’t small either. Apart from two beds and a table missing one corner, there was nothing else in the room. The bedding on the beds seemed freshly made, although the room felt rather bare and quiet.
After picking their beds, Qiongli and Bai Xinran sat down, only to realise they had nothing to do. With the world now in the apocalypse, it was devoid of internet. The only sources of merriment were books and where could they find them here?
The quiet conversation of a few distant survivors floated into the room from outside. It got fainter when it reached their floor.
Despite Bai Xinran still wearing her school uniform from before the apocalypse, she was now 18, not 15, but her thin physique, due to chronic food shortages, might fool you into thinking she was younger. However, her vivacious spirit remained unchanged.
As time passed, they felt increasingly bored. Bai Xinran occasionally snuck glances towards the window covered by newspapers. The apocalypse had left the entire city without power and their room was particularly dim due to the newspaper-covered windows. The only source of illumination was a few lit candles in the hallway.
There was a knock at their door. Presumably, it was due to the bounty they harvested earlier in the day.
"Hey, are you in? This is your lunch."
"Oh, coming."
Qiongli put Nannan down, stroked her cheek, and opened the door to find a woman roughly her age holding two bowls of noodles. The seasoning was simply soy sauce and vinegar, but the noodles smelled delicious.
This food, which most people wouldn’t have given a second glance before the apocalypse, would now incite a bloody fight!
"Thank you, thank you," Qiongli gratefully responded.
The woman smiled gently looking at Qiongli, Bai Xinran, and Nannan who was rolling around on the bed. During their week-long isolation in the room, the survivors had given them some food due to Nannan’s young age, but Qiongli and Bai Xinran weren’t so lucky.
The last time Qiongli and Bai Xinran had a proper meal was three days ago; they had been subsisting on hunger. Most people would find it extremely hard to move in such conditions.
"It’s alright, you did well today. Rest assured, you’re part of our big family now. But remember, never look outside! Also, later, I’ll introduce you to everyone here. You and the little girl must remember who’s who. Don’t trust anyone you meet outside whom you don’t recognize."
"I know, I will."
"Good."
When Qiongli took the bowls and glanced at the woman as though she wanted to say something, the woman promptly said, "Don’t worry, the child’s meal isn’t ready yet. We will bring it up shortly."
"Thank you."
The woman nodded and was about to leave when Bai Xinran jumped off the bed to stop her.
"Auntie, wait, I..."
The woman turned around and saw the contemplation in her eyes. She quickly figured it out and said, "Child, are you bored? Unfortunately, there isn’t much entertainment here. You can tear a small slit in the newspaper and look outside, but only at the sky, don’t look at the street or else..." Before she could finish, Bai Xinran cheerfully thanked her and promised to be careful.
"Just don’t look outside!"
"Understood!"
Bai Xinran ran to the window and tore a small slit in the newspaper at eye level. Not trusting her to follow the instruction, the woman pulled out a gun and followed her. She was afraid that Bai Xinran might see something she shouldn’t and risk attracting the creatures outside to break the window and get in.
Bai Xinran was well aware of the consequences, so she squinted and deliberately avoided looking down. Instead, she enjoyed the view of the blue sky and the tall buildings in Jinhe City.
The zombies here were rather unique. Unlike other zombies, they did not stop eating after a certain limit, instead they consumed the whole body leaving no waste. As a result, Jinhe City was quite clean, unlike Lin City, which was full of decomposing bodies and scattered bones.
The apocalypse had almost been four years, the unattended city was full of evolved plants glowing with a ghostly green light and zombified withered branches.
However, greenery was clearly dominant. Zombified plants needed specific conditions to thrive, whereas ordinary plants proliferated rapidly. Looking around, every building was adorned with a pleasing lush green.
Especially the top of one particular 90-meter-high building, a large evolving vine stretched from top to bottom, its root covered the entire building. It was blooming with little red flowers.
