Chapter 85: 84, Special treatment for naughty kids_1
Even after three baths, the dirt didn’t come off? Perfect, perfect, just the effect I was going for. Ren He felt that this year, his family wouldn’t need to go out and visit relatives for New Year’s greetings—the kids were too dirty to be presentable!
He felt that he needed to re-evaluate this Divine Punishment System. The rewards it gave were one meaner than the next. Ren He himself had never thought how nasty it was to have set off that prank firecracker on the road...
In the afternoon, Ren He’s two aunts and uncle arrived with their families. Mrs. Ren Ru Min repeatedly told Ren He, as the oldest child, to be polite and give in to his younger cousins. Ren He didn’t think much of it—if he had to give in, then so be it.
During the New Year, the food was always the most lavish. Mrs. Ren whipped up eight cold dishes and eight hot dishes in one breath, showing no trace of her tough exterior from work. Ren He just helped her peel garlic and pick vegetables on the side.
Ru Min straightened her apron and suddenly looked at Ren He skeptically, "Did you do something bad? Is that why you’re so eager to help me?"
Ren He opened his mouth but was so choked up that he couldn’t speak for a long time. Was helping her now synonymous with having a guilty conscience for doing something bad? Could this New Year get any worse!
"No, that’s not possible, I’m such an upright kid, I would never do anything bad," Ren He explained.
"Oh, right, how did you do on your final exams this time? I forgot to ask you," Ru Min suddenly remembered this matter. It was usual for her son to perform poorly in school, and she was almost used to it...
"Chinese 93, math 99, English 99, history 90, politics 71, geography 94," Ren He said gleefully. He was now completely confident. With his superhuman memory, everything he had learned in his past life had come back to him, and he felt he had justified the period during his senior year when he had studied hard.
Ru Min was surprised, "You did that well? I don’t believe it!"
"If you don’t believe it, ask my teachers. Really, I’ve had a sudden change of heart and decided to repent and start over," Ren He said seriously.
"Smooth talker, who did you learn that from? Don’t try that with me. What about your chemistry and physics grades?" Ru Min remembered Ren He had two more subjects.
"Cough, cough, chemistry 7, physics 8..." Ren He’s grades in physics and chemistry were dismal. To the uninformed, it might seem as if these subjects were graded out of 10...
Ru Min rolled her eyes, "Get out, get out, get out—I don’t need your help picking vegetables. I’d be grateful if you could just study properly."
"It’s okay to be weak in some subjects. With the other subjects, getting into a good school won’t be hard at all. There’s a separation between liberal arts and sciences in the college exam," Ren He explained. In the 2006 Luo City middle school exams, physics, and chemistry combined only accounted for a total of 50 points; that’s why he could so confidently specialize.
When Ren He stepped out of the kitchen, he saw his cousins and cousins’ four children all running around in the living room. Upon seeing him, they all charged over asking him for pocket money. Ha, they’ve got the wrong person. Theoretically, I shouldn’t have a single cent on me.
Although, in reality, he did have money, he couldn’t give it away. What if his mom asked where it came from? There was no way to explain it.
Don’t look now, but despite his success—as a middle schooler earning millions—he was still not considered truly successful in Ru Min’s eyes. What was a few million compared to good study habits? Writing novels, wanting bicycles, he’d better roll back home and focus on his studies.
If Ren He had been born into a poor family, it would have been fine to proudly announce that he could make money. But tragically, buying a car worth over two million instantly reeked of nouveau riche, and he didn’t dare to make a peep...
"So stingy, miserly to death," the four rascals turned their faces and walked away.
Ren He’s face turned black. "Stop right there! Can’t you speak like a human? When have I ever been stingy? I’m nouveau riche, okay?
And then the bunch of kids ran into Ren He’s room, playing and making a ruckus. His room was already a mess, and they were even jumping on the bed with their shoes on. Ren He just scowled and stayed silent. After all, the oldest of these little devils was only 8, and he really didn’t know what to say to them.
However, just as he was about to turn around and leave, he heard a loud ’clunk’. His laptop had fallen to the floor and shattered...
Damn it, Ren He knew the files inside were probably fine since the hard drive wasn’t damaged, but that was his tool for typing! These damn kids were too much!
"Nobody stop me, I’m going to cure these brats today!" Ren He glanced at the adults chatting outside, then went back into the room and closed the door. When the two worlds were closed off, a grim smile appeared on Ren He’s face: "Sit down properly, all of you, and recite the ’Three Character Classic’. If you can’t recite it, forget about playing!"
By dinner time, the adults suddenly realized that the children were missing. Only the door of Ren He’s room was closed. When they opened the door, they found four little brats sitting on small stools, looking pitiful: "At birth, men are inherently good..."
The moment they saw their parents, they were almost moved to tears. "Why did it take you so long to come?"
Ren He’s uncle laughed, "Ren He is really a considerate brother, teaching the kids to recite the ’Three Character Classic.’ I’ve read about it in the newspaper; it’s quite interesting, a suitable primer, and it has quite a few historical stories in it—very good. Let’s eat first. You kids, go thank your brother!"
To deal with naughty kids, if you hit them, their parents get upset, thinking you’re an insensitive older sibling for hitting your younger brothers and sisters. So Ren He made them study—definitely no opposition to that!
That evening, more than ten family members sat down for dinner, the television in the background tuned to Channel 1, waiting for the Spring Festival Gala to start. Suddenly, the 8-year-old brat of a cousin volunteered, "I’ll serve the rice for everyone!"
"Oh, how sensible the child is," Ru Min said with a smile.
But Ren He sensed something fishy because he had noticed before that this kid was cunning and held grudges, a real little schemer. He watched the little devil closely to see what he was up to.
As expected, Ren He saw him quietly spit into a bowl of rice! It was almost certain that bowl was meant for him!
Not bad, kiddo, you’ve got your brother’s style, thought Ren He, but he didn’t expose the ruse. When the little devil came by, Ren He just scooped the top layer of rice from the bowl prepared especially for him and put it onto the kid’s bowl: "You’re growing, eat more."
The little devil was flabbergasted, taking a long time to recover!
Even though he had removed the contaminated layer, Ren He still had no appetite and planned to get a fresh serving later. The meal could go on, but the naughty child couldn’t go unpunished. Otherwise, how would he learn who the big brother really was?
Ren He discreetly took two prank firecrackers from beside the television: "To reward you for serving rice to everyone, your brother will give you two firecrackers!" Ren He even made a show of the firecrackers’ fuse, "Hmm, the fuse is quite long; it should be safe. Go play with it!"
At first, the little devil thought Ren He had discovered his scheme, but seeing the reward now, he didn’t feel like he had been caught.
During New Year’s, firecrackers and such were everywhere, and these two firecrackers were even in fancy packaging. Who could guess what was hidden inside...
