Hunter of the Evernight
Chapter 626: Up in flames

Chapter 626: Up in flames

He once again found himself at a crossroads, standing face to face with the towering monstrosity formed from lava, a challenge he needed to overcome to become the master of Excalibur.

His heart palpitated at the sight as he felt completely powerless, unable to do anything as the creature regarded him as nothing more than an insect, an annoying itch that wouldn’t go away.

Its fierce eyes flickered as it let out a great roar, and the next moment, Alex was swept away in a wave of heat too powerful to defend against.

When he opened his eyes, he found himself back in the submarine, covered in sweat while taking heavy breaths.

Your pneuma seems to have taken a bit of damage.

He glanced towards the person who spoke, his gaze reflecting the shadowed appearance of Humphrey.

"How exactly am I supposed to go against the vestige of a deity?... Don’t tell me this is what all wielders of Godkillers go through?"

It is difficult to say. Throughout history, there have only ever been three recorded Godkillers, and you are holding one of them. The other is owned by Salem and the last is what the Mad King used to create his legacy. All were forged through various means so I dare say the method of conquering the other two would be different from this one.

"So what do I do?... There’s no way I would be able to take on the dead deity in Excalibur. So what’s the point of having a Godkiller if I can’t use it?" Alex asked, feeling a tinge of frustration.

Ana, who was also present in the room, made a suggestion. "How about getting someone else to fight for you?"

Alex glanced at her. "What do you mean?"

Humphrey seemed to quickly understand what she was getting at as he muttered in realization.

Just like Ulysses.

"Indeed." Ana nodded. "Ulysses would be dead if even one of the powers in his body was absent. But because both are there, they cancel each other out, allowing him to enjoy the best of both worlds."

Alex furrowed his brows as he pondered on her words before remarking. "So I should corrupt the sword?"

I have a feeling that would worsen matters. I believe it’s best to achieve balance by utilizing a concept that would serve as the opposite of what is already in The Godkiller.

"So that both forces inevitably clash."

"Exactly," Ana remarked. "That way, once they clash and cancel each other, you’d be able to utilize what’s left."

So the main goal now is figuring out the opposite of the deity that is currently residing within the blade.

Alex let out a sigh, realizing just how troublesome things were.

If he’d known it would be so complicated, perhaps he might not have bothered with it in the first place.

But then, recalling that his journey was taking him toward an inevitable clash with divine beings, he had a feeling that such a weapon would be needed

Just as he was about to decide on the next course of action, Ulysses burst into the room with an alarmed look on his face.

"The city’s under attack!"

***

The city of Pheripolis was up in flames.

One would think it was because of King Ull and his coalition, but they would be slightly wrong.

Though King Ull had indeed lit the fuse by destroying the walls of Pheripolis, he hadn’t done anything else, with the mobile cities under his command waiting patiently outside while watching as the city-state destroyed itself.

Those who supported the king’s agenda did not hesitate to reveal their support, in fear of being swept up in whatever terrifying weapon he had used to make a statement.

The crystallized area that was once a third of Pheripolis stood as a testament to the fact that they would lose should they dare to fight back, hence their reasons for attacking their own.

"Humans are very easy to manipulate. Make them scared and like puppets, they would dance to your tunes." Ull muttered with a satisfactory grin, his gaze fixated on the burning city state.

Cybele didn’t bother with a follow-up, instead changing the topic as she remarked. "You can’t allow them all to die. Send your men in, end the bloodshed before it gets worse."

"Oh?... I had no idea you cared for them."

Cybele glanced at him with a gaze that screamed, ’Really?’ causing the Exalted one to cough awkwardly before finally responding.

"I’ll lead the charge personally."

Nodding, Cybele intoned. "I’ll come with you."

"I’ll be honored to have you ride with me. Wait here while I make the preparations."

With that, Ull quickly took his leave with Cybele muttering to herself.

"What do we do now?" Elena inquired as she watched as the once clear skyline of Pheripolis was covered in a thick cloud of black smoke.

Nadia pursed her lips. "I never knew the barbarian tribes were so strong. To think that they would need a single attack to plunge the entire city-state into chaos."

"That attack wasn’t normal." Victoria intoned from beside them, using an umbrella to shield herself from the unforgiving rays of the Lightbringer.

"I agree," Elena muttered, feeling a slight dread as she intoned. "It felt like it didn’t exist yet it was there."

"I agree. Usually, there’d be a fluctuation in the aether, but there was nothing. Even the aether itself was erased. Such a terrifying weapon." Nadia trembled as she recalled what happened moments before disaster struck.

"Master is here." Victoria suddenly said, drawing the attention of the other two.

The next moment, black and white light surged before them, and out of it, Alex, accompanied by Ana and Humphrey, emerged.

"Good to see you guys again," Alex remarked with a smile only to pause as he noticed a notable absence.

"Master." Victoria intoned as she dropped to her knees and bowed in reverence.

"Where’s Arwen?"

"She’s gone."

Alex’s expression shifted. "What happened?"

"She was kidnapped by the Banshee," Elena remarked only for Nadia to speak up.

"More like she left of her own accord."
