Chapter 330: 169 Zhengzhan City, Beidou Holy Temple_2
Footsteps stomped on the ground, making an earthquake-like rumble.
Inside the body, a bizarre roar emanated, as terrifying black spots lit up inch by inch.
It seemed as if not a single existence’s breath could be weaker than the headless giant’s.
"Crap..."
Bai Xiao had just said that outside the city was safer than inside it, but perhaps he’d previously been lucky not to encounter any, or maybe the truly terrifying monsters in the Imperial Graveyard awoke and roamed in cycles. He was fearless because of his ignorance.
Thud thud thud thud!
From all directions, huge figures attacked the city.
That omnipresent sense of threat and oppression
made Bai Xiao’s hair stand on end.
On the city walls, a series of running footsteps immediately rang out, and from nowhere, a host of soldier statues clad in Stone Armor appeared, densely covering the parapets in short order. Giant Crossbow Carriages were also swiftly pushed out, aiming at each bizarre monster. After locking onto their targets,
Whoosh whoosh whoosh... Boom!
A volley fired, flames blossomed, explosions echoed.
An intense siege battle erupted between the two sides instantly.
And at this moment, Bai Xiao’s sense of urgency maxed out. Although dying in the Fear Core didn’t mean real death, he preferred to stay alive if possible. He had a feeling that death here would have very serious consequences!
A thought flashed.
Bai Xiao’s figure suddenly dashed, treading on thunder, turning into a black comet that streaked towards a gap in the wall.
The soldier statues were occupied with the creatures outside the wall, too busy to pay him any attention!
He might as well try to rush into the city and investigate!
Bai Xiao’s Qi and blood burst forth again, and with a stomp, he accelerated a second time, sprinting in. Even so, this still drew more than a dozen arrows!
Bang bang bang bang bang...
In a series of fiery explosions, stones flew and dust filled the sky.
The lofty figure rushed through, body wrapped in wind and fire, and it seemed that a massive force had pushed his back, accelerating him into the greyish-black street.
He quickly vanished into the mist.
...
"Whew..."
Inside the city, at a street corner, a quiet spot.
Bai Xiao took a deep, ragged breath, checking his body for injuries.
Fortunately, his fast reactions and movements had saved him from being hit by the arrows.
But, Bai Xiao was still battered by blast waves from all around, his Qi and blood violently churning, and there was a scorching sensation on his back—his skin might have been torn.
Time was pressing; he didn’t have the opportunity to explore the Fear Core in that massive white skeletal skull. That he could take this chance to rush in was already lucky. Bai Xiao looked around at the murky environment and took a deep breath.
At this moment, he truly understood the danger of the Fear Core.
A wealth of mysteries and unknowns began to emerge.
His thoughts shifted, and on the street, only Bai Xiao stood silently.
All around was deserted, no trace of living beings.
A glance swept over, the black stone street lamps on the curbside with dim green fires on top, illuminating the surrounding area despite the fog.
"This is..."
Bai Xiao’s gaze swept toward the distance, walking briskly over.
He stopped beneath a bronze signpost, standing still.
On the signpost, there pointed signs in four directions—this seemed to be a crossroad. On the surface of the signs, there were some unknown characters and symbols.
"City... City Lord Mansion..."
"Warring City, barracks."
"Seven Stars Square."
"Beidou... Holy Temple?"
Bai Xiao suddenly realized he knew the meanings of these characters.
He furrowed his brow, pondering for a moment before recalling. It seemed to be from the fragmented memories of the Totem Giant, too fragmented to piece together a full picture. Only when coming into contact with familiar things could he conjure related memories briefly. So at this moment, Bai Xiao understood these characters.
"Warring City?"
He murmured to himself.
Warring City, that appeared to be the name of this magnificent city!
"Thud thud thud thud..."
Suddenly, a colossal sound of battle clash resonated from afar. It was obviously that monsters from the Imperial Graveyard and City were engaged in an intense fight.
"Choose a direction to explore."
A thought flashed through Bai Xiao’s mind.
It seemed to be a fragment of a memory from the Totem Giant.
"Beidou... Holy Temple?"
He did not know what this place called the Holy Temple held, but the memories from the Totem Giant suggested to Bai Xiao that it was important, possibly even the most significant place in the whole City, more important than the City Lord Mansion!
"The notes from the eldest senior brother also mentioned something called Beidou Power. It’s a pity I have not read them yet. Once I am out of this Fear Nightmare, I must take a good look at them..." he lifted his head, his gaze profound as he looked ahead.
Moving forward, Bai Xiao began to walk slowly down the alley directly in front of him.
The pathway was over three meters wide, with square stones the size of basketballs paving the ground. The stones were somewhat loose, emitting a slight creaking sound when stepped on, with the occasional weed sprouting from the crevices on the edges of the road.
On both sides were residential areas, with houses standing quietly in the midst of the gray fog.
The dark windows seemed like gaping mouths, opening and closing endlessly.
Air flowed through, humming.
A shadowy figure swiftly moved down the alley, heading towards a distant target.
Confronting the gray mist, Bai Xiao moved forward.
His footfall on some of the loose stones made a cracking sound.
"Crack, crack, crack!"
All of a sudden, a pronounced crack was heard in the silent street.
It was as if two sets of footsteps had overlapped instantaneously.
Swish!
Bai Xiao turned his head sharply, his gaze fierce as a wild animal.
But behind him, there was no trace of anyone. Only the slightly undulating gray-black mist floated by, brushing against the walls and the ground with a rustling sound.
"Hmm?"
He frowned.
Pausig for a second, Bai Xiao continued to move forward.
"Crack, crack, crack, crack!"
There it was again!
He spun around in an instant, the muscles in his right arm bulging exaggeratedly, like the thick tread of a car tire, with terrifying blue veins blossoming.
His fierce expression, paired with the raised fist, looked deadly dangerous.
However, behind him, there was still no one to be seen. It seemed that the overlapping footsteps were merely an illusion, or perhaps it was just that one of the stones underfoot was too loose, causing a louder noise.
"Am I being too sensitive?"
Bai Xiao relaxed slightly, his face calming down as he muttered to himself.
However, right behind him, or rather on the upper part of his back, a dark shadow lurked silently, its face displaying a sinister smile. It was a shabbily dressed child, with eyes of pure black unmoving, quietly gazing at the back of Bai Xiao’s head, its mouth stretching wider and wider.
The smile reached an arc that almost split the face in two.
Out of the pitch-black mouth, a fang-toothed tentacle stretched out, trembling inch by inch, poised to touch the back of Bai Xiao’s head in just a moment.
"Did you think I hadn’t noticed you? Little brat?"
Suddenly, a deep voice rang out.
Hiss, hiss, hiss, hiss...
A giant black serpent head burst forth from Bai Xiao’s left shoulder. A pair of savage, blood-red eyes stared quietly backwards at the child. A forked tongue flickered slightly, exuding a fearsome aura and deadly atmosphere.
From those snake eyes, one could see almost human emotions!
"Roar!!!"
The python’s head suddenly opened wide, its formidable fangs bared, and the gape of its jaws was wide enough to swallow an adult whole!
With a grunt!
The child, caught off guard, was devoured whole by the Ba Snake. Gurgle, wisps of black qi evaporated from between the scales.
"That tastes terrible..."
Bai Xiao stood still, raising his hand slowly to gently stroke the head of the Ba Snake that had emerged over his shoulder, its scales smooth and fine.
"Your family is next."
Bai Xiao’s gaze remained fixed ahead as two figures appeared in the mist, a man and a woman, both with eerie smiles and ink-black eyes gazing intently.
"I will send your parents to join you... together."
