"Chapter 824

Anyway, every month, some ignorant people would be sent here for punishment to sweep. She had long since gotten used to it.

Before her eyes laid a broad road made of bluestone bricks, around six meters wide, it meandered and extended infinitely into the distance with no end in sight.

On both sides were simulated towering cliffs, with plentiful dangerous bends carved out of the cliffs, leaving many irregular gaps; probably, these were the results of past people conducting their grading tasks.

She picked up the broom and moved forward slowly.

The place wasn’t very dirty; she would only sweep if she saw obvious filth.

Back then in the temple, sweeping the ground was a compulsory task after waking up. Thus, for her, it was not so much a punishment, but rather an opportunity to calm her mind.

The farther she went, the smaller the sky overhead became.

As the evening darkened, street lamps lit up one by one.

The surroundings were quiet, without a soul in sight.

Just as she was about to sit down and rest, suddenly a voice came out from the loudspeaker.

"Hey, hey, you can stop sweeping here for today; now, walk back and finish up your job, then you can go back!"

It was the voice of the Old Man.

Thinking about the Old Man, Chloe Collins remembered the computer.

She stood up and pushed the cart back the way she came.

There was no leaves around here basically she had nothing to do.

However, she was quickly proven wrong.

After retracing a certain distance, under the bright street lamp, a piece of bluestone brick was full of cigarette ash.

At this time, there was no wind; the cigarette ash couldn’t have blown in.

She turned her head and looked at the corridor beside her.

With one glance, she got a scare.

In the narrow path that could barely fit two people, a man was leaning against the wall.

He was tall, quietly leaning against the wall with a cigarette in his fingers.

There was no light in the corridor, and the street light outside only illuminated him from the waist down. Above that, Chloe could barely see his sharp profile.

A feeling of familiarity washed over her. She blinked hard, and when she opened her eyes again, he had already put on his mask.

Without light, Chloe strained her eyes but still couldn’t make out the details of his mask.

After a while, she pointed at the cigarette ash on the ground with her broom and signaled through hand gestures: she would sweep it herself.

The other person took a drag from his cigarette and stepped out from the darkness.

Only then did Chloe get a clear look at his mask.

The mask was grotesque, with three colors of red, black, and white. It had fierce eyes and a large mouth, resembling the grim reaper in Ryoto’s culture.

He didn’t say a word, and walked straight past her towards the doorway.

Chloe’s eyebrows furrowed, as she swept up the cigarette ash onto her cart and pushed forward.

The man walked slowly, as if taking a leisurely stroll.

The ash from his cigarette drew a line on the road.

Chloe immediately stopped pushing the cart, stepped forward, and grabbed his hand.

The man turned his head, his grotesque mask facing her.

Chloe: You can’t just flick your cigarette ash everywhere.

The man slowly lowered his gaze and looked at the cigarette in his fingers.

Then, he pulled his hand away from her grasp.

The injury on her wrist was abruptly tugged, causing Chloe to let out a muffled groan.

The man stared at her indifferently, noticing the bruising on her fingers and the blood seeping through the gauze on her wrist.

That bandage needed changing.

However, his eyes didn’t show a shred of sympathy or pity, besides indifference, there was nothing else.

He just stared for a couple of seconds, then continued to walk forward.

Chloe gathered a stone and casually tossed it towards his cigarette.

The next second, the stone she tossed was caught between the fingers of the man who never turned back. Before she could react, he flicked his fingers, similarly not looking back, and tossed the stone back at her.
