Chapter 244: Let Her Mind Stop Her Heart From Moving.
And slowly, from twenty-four hours since she went unconscious, the clock ticked fast and it became thirty-two hours since she fell unconscious.
The side that had an injury on her head had been bandaged already and the drip that was being injected into her body to provide her strength have been exhausted twenty minutes ago.
After Mr. Williams discarded the drip bag, he also went away and right now, it was just Arissa and Nicklaus in the room with no sound from anything except their breathing.
Nicklaus cleaned her face one last time with the hand towel before starting long at her face.
He moved away and sat on the couch close to his balcony door and from there, he stared at her softly while listening to the raindrops outside.
His mother loved him. Nicklaus was sure his biological mother loved him. She wouldn’t have sent him away the day she planned to kill his father if she doesn’t love him, nor would she have let him live. And the part where she abandoned him and flees, she might not be able to live with herself looking at him in the eyes after what she let him see but whichever way, Nicklaus knew his mother loved him.
That was why he was left shaken for Arissa’s life when he saw what happened. Although Alfred wasn’t her biological father, the man should have had some love for her.
From what he noticed, between Alfred and Laura, Arissa was most likely to pick the man between the two. Precisely, she does mind if Alfred gets hurt.
Back at the hospital, she tried to stop him even with the last strength in her which left him torn about what to do, if he should hurt Alfred or wait for her.
Arissa’s body jerked from her sleep and at that moment, she felt feverish from her deep slumber. The nightmare was reoccurring and this time, it was more vivid.
Unlike the normal times when the dream only consists of Nicklaus lying down in the pool of blood. This time the dream started somewhere.
It started with her standing alone, staring around with what looked like fear in her eyes. The scene wasn’t explanatory but in the next second, she heard a gunshot behind her and that was when she forcefully jerked up from her unconscious state.
A scream tore out of her throat and Nicklaus who had been so lost in his thoughts got pulled back to reality.
He rushed up to her and helped her to a sitting position. Her bones were crushed by the dream that she couldn’t seat.
He held her into his arm, "All right, it’s alright. I’m here," he rubbed her sweaty arm to calm her trembling body down.
"I’m here," he kept on assuring her.
Arissa kept on breathing fast, her trembling body did not calm down either. She felt nauseous and Nicklaus noticed it.
He picked up the water-filled bowl he just used in cleaning her and presented it under her mouth.
Arissa looked up at him, her frightened eyes asking if it was okay for her to pour it in. Nicklaus nodded and rubbed at her back.
"Blargh," Arissa threw up into the bowl and tears escaped her eyes.
Nicklaus stroked her back tenderly, "Let it all out, let it out," Nicklaus encouraged her. Arissa sniffed and with more tears escaping her eyes, she let it all out.
Nicklaus put the bowl away when she was done. He leaned toward the hand towel on the lampstand, grabbing it, he wiped her mouth with it.
"Here," he hurriedly presented her with a glass of water that was reserved for her on the lampstand.
Arissa reached for the water and took it into her trembling hands. "Easy," Nicklaus warned, "Just a sip," he told her, holding her hand with the glass to assist her.
Arissa gave him back the glass after a sip. Nicklaus dropped the glass back on the lampstand.
In a daze, Arissa tiredly leaned into him and fell on his lap. Her body trembled on his lap and Nicklaus’s world was shaken as her body trembled.
He took the hair that fell over her face off and planted a kiss on the side of her head, "It’s okay, love. It’s okay," he said when her body won’t stop trembling.
"I’m... I’m scared," Arissa whispered after a while.
Nicklaus rubbed her hair down to her quivering arm. He leaned down and placed kisses all over her arm and slowly, Arissa calmed down.
Her trembling heart slowly became stable. She turned away from his balcony door and looked up at his face.
"Another nightmare?" Nicklaus asked, finally staring into those brown eyes.
Arissa nodded. "It was the same nightmare, always the same," she told him.
Nicklaus sighed. "I’m here now, they won’t return,"
Arissa smiled up at him. Her eyes were filled with both hope and fear.
"Are you hungry?" Nicklaus asked caressing her cheekbones.
Arissa shook her head. She has no appetite at the moment. The dream was too gruesome and this time, too vivid for her to be able to eat.
"You are hungry," he confirmed by himself before reaching out for his phone, not taking no for an answer.
It was 2:am already but still, he dialed Rue’s number. His wife wants to eat and if she requests Mac Dolnad, that store would be open again.
The call connected and Arissa’s eyes widened when she heard him talking to Rue.
"I said I’m not_"
"Shu," he placed a finger on her lips. Holding her gaze, he continued the call, asking Rue to be as quick as possible.
"You have dark circles under your eyes," Arissa pointed out after he ended the call with Rue. "Am I the cause?"
Nicklaus leaned down and placed a brief kiss on her lips, "You had me worried." he breathed, "I wasn’t able to sleep a wink, but I would now that you’re awake,"
Arissa blinked at him with unshed tears. The dream, her father, and everything make her realize more reasons why she should not let her mind stop her heart from moving with this man.
She raised to him and held him in a tight embrace. Nicklaus laid flat on the bed and let her hug him with her ears placed on his chest.
He hugged her back, leading her to seat up in the hugging position. Nicklaus planted a kiss on her cheek as they embraced.
"I think I love you, Nicklaus," Arissa said in her heart...
