His Toxic Addiction -
Chapter 159: The Deal.
Chapter 159: The Deal.
Arissa’s phone on her lap vibrated, indicating a coming call. Closing her laptop, she turned her phone upward to know the caller.
A hearted smile covered her face when she saw it was Collins and without wasting a second more, she swiped to the answer signal.
"Arissa," Collins breathed from the other end. He sounded a bit tired which made Arissa raise her brow.
"Just finished an operation?" she asked casually, giving him all of her attention as she was happy hearing his voice.
"Hmm," Collins replied, his voice as gentle as always, "A major one. Sorry, I’ve been busy these past few days. How have you been?"
Arissa smiled. She was the nonchalant dumbass who was supposed to check on him but she never did until he called her first after a stressful day. Somehow, he reminded her of Richard. Richard would always make out time for her but it seems not anymore because he wasn’t even answering her calls not to talk about calling her.
It was all stressful and she swears when she overcomes all of these, she would never go through them again. Not even in her next life.
"I’ve been good, trying to patch up a few things. You?"
Collins breathed, "I’m doing okay, just that I sometimes miss you," he told her.
Arissa smiled, "Thanks for that," it was a good feeling to her that at least someone misses her even with all of get ugly attitude.
Maybe, she has to start working on her emotions and try to let the people who love her into her heart and not the people she loves. She loved her parents and Mr. Adams but little did she know they could do all of these to her and mess up her life this way.
A short silence ensured between them until Collins broke it, "Umm, I just wanted to hear your voice. Anyways, I just spoke to Adele’s doctor and there is a fifty-fifty bargain that she would be out of a coma this month so, let’s just hope,"
Arissa was less surprised when she heard the news. The last time she went to the hospital, the new doctor explained this to her but still, her heart could not help but grow in anticipation and happiness. She also can’t wait, each second she have to wait was more than a year for her.
"Thank you so much for all of your help, I honestly don’t know what to say but_"
Collins cut her off, "It’s alright. You helped me more than what I just offered. Your hard work in my life and words made me who I am," he reminded her.
Arissa just smiled, "I only gave the words and you put them into practice," she objected to the fact she helped him.
Collins laughed gratefully, "And helped me clear my college loan when I was stranded and broke," he backed his claim up.
Arissa shook her head, "You helped me with a life. What I did for you then would never repay what you just did for me," she argued.
"Okay then, if you say so," Collins agreed. Knowing he wouldn’t win an argument with her, he changed the topic, "How is Nicklaus?"
Oh no! The name Nicklaus successfully reminded Arissa of a lot of things but not that she showed it because she still replied smoothly, "His good, and about the baby stuff, it was all an expectation," fixing up words, she continued, "Due to how I constantly got sick in the morning, we both thought it was a baby," she laughed awkwardly to lighten the air when Collins turned silent.
"Nicklaus never meant it that way. We just concluded without confirming it but we just went for a checkup and I realized it wasn’t a baby," she lied tightly yet smoothly and Nicklaus would pay for it.
"I understand. Most couples are that way," Collins spoke up after a long silence, "So how are your medication and health? Since it wasn’t a baby, I’m sure you should be free from that morning fever, right?"
"I’m okay_" she trailed off when she heard little whispers from Collins’s end. Listening to them - which was rude, she realized it was work-related.
"Arissa, I need to go. I’d call sooner than you expect but for now, take care of yourself and call me anytime," he said hurriedly
"Okay, thank you for your time," and with a rushed good night from him, she ended the call.
Dropping her phone beside her, little thoughts clouded her mind as she remembered the day event with Nicklaus.
Perhaps making such a deal was a wrong decision, Arissa doesn’t know but she was sure this deal would not produce something healthy.
She sat on her bed with a solemn expression as she started off her French window in deep thought. Why doesn’t she just travel and leave everything behind as she had done three years ago? Yes, that was a good idea but strangely she can’t.
She felt like something was holding her back. She has fulfilled her parent’s wish, she has gotten married to who they wanted her to be, and she has risen their status back. Wasn’t all that enough?
Can’t she just leave this tormenting life behind and go far away? To a place where even Nicklaus’s mighty resources won’t find her.
She stood up from her bed. Speaking of Nicklaus, she does not think she could trust him because, in the first place, she doesn’t know his motive for helping her or why he was excavating into her family’s crimes.
Who knows, he might want to use all he has found out to blackmail her father into doing his bidding when the time comes.
The more she thought about the deal, the more she try to lessen her anxiety about what she had gotten herself into with him.
If her parents and Mr. Adams could shatter her without remembering they were her parents or the bond they once shared, how much more Nicklaus?
Though he said he only want them to act as normal couples which was laughable. It sounded so porous but fake and she did not realize it then because she was blinded by rage now she reasoned it, and her tension increased.
There was no way he would get himself into a criminal case as deep and deadly as this just for some acting. There was also no way he would also say it was only for lust. Whereas, they already had sex..... "Stop thinking," she mused, "You would only go crazy," she scolded herself.
She has tried thinking of all possible reasons for his fake help but she couldn’t come up with one strong reasonable solid reason. All her thinking was always summed up in the conclusion that he was genuine to help her but she refuse to believe it.
Even when Mr. Adams was helping her to get those documents, she knew he had an inner motive. Probably to take over her father’s fortune when he had successfully sent him to jail and unless Adele has a problem with that, she - Arissa - was totally fine with it.
But Nicklaus - she don’t know, neither could she guess his hidden motive and it crumbled her. In the first place, why did she accept that deal? She snorted at herself in disapproval.
Though the deal seems promising for her to get a faster result, Arissa felt something off with it, more like a trap.
Locking get fingers together, she sat back on her bed in thought. It was in the middle of the night so the peace that came with the darkness allowed her thoughts to flow smoothly.
"I hope I don’t die first before finding Adele’s parents," she muttered to herself before dragging her knees to herself, figuring something out.
