Nicklaus’s phone interrupted him from his sweet thoughts about Arissa. Glancing at the seat beside him, he pressed the answer log as he had to take the important call.

"Daniel?"

"Boss," the other end answered immediately, "We have successfully taken him to a different hideout but we got a problem,".

Nicklaus’s brow creased at the report, "What’s the problem?" he asked as he intensely fixed his gaze on the road.

"Logan got a hold of Laura before we could," the man explained.

Nicklaus nodded, "He thinks she has him," he hinted.

The man at the other end nodded, "Mr. Lincoln has been released. He doesn’t seem like one who escaped as we’ve been watching his every move,"

Nicklaus smiled, "I thought as much. Laura has been creating some havoc and it’s only natural he would send Alfred out to gather some information and resources,"

"Resources were the only reason he still kept Alfred breathing," Nicklaus added.

"Boss," the man called when Nicklaus went silent, "From what we noticed, Laura intended to go after Adele’s parents with camouflage. However, the girl was killed right after she left the Lincoln apartment," the man reported further.

Nicklaus nodded in acknowledgment, "And Mr. Adams?"

"The man had been working in the shadows and is extremely fishy. I think he already knows where Adele is and from my findings, he seems to have something against the Lincoln family. His facade is wearing off and it would only be a matter of time before he comes after young Mrs. as a means of revenge,"

Nicklaus’s car came to a screeching halt when he heard his biggest fear. Surely, Mr. Adams wasn’t on Lincoln’s side and Nicklaus was sure he would make that man suffer if he passes his rage to the wrong person.

Nicklaus was only taking cautious steps. He would have first ended Mr. Adams when he found out the man tricked Arissa into the wrong place so his men could silently end her life.

The address he gave to Arissa wasn’t where Theodore was based at. Rather, it was his base camp and he already targeted his men to end Arissa the moment she steps in.

It boiled Nicklaus until this second but for now, he has to slow down.

"Have you found out what his gauge against Lincoln is all about?"

And at that question, it took Daniel a minute as he started explaining all he found out. The story was going west, as it was also turning extremely sour.

Nicklaus chuckled mirthlessly as he do not want his private investigator to go further. He knows a lot about Alfred and the man’s sin wasn’t new.

They disgust him each time he hears about them.

"Boss?"

"Hmm,"

"Should we make the Knewman’s couple search for their daughter easier? Beatrice already hired a close friend of mine as her private investigator. They want to search the whole of the country before leaving,"

Nicklaus pondered over what Daniel said. He wanted to make things easier for Arissa and not some couple.

Adele wasn’t yet awake and he don’t know how Arissa might feel if he takes things into his hands. Particularly not now that she wants a divorce. Remembering their fight again, Nicklaus’s face darkened as he gripped the starting wheel tightly until his knuckles turned white, and looked as if he would snap the steering wheel into half in seconds.

"Boss_"

"Don’t let them know about it. I would have to talk to my wife first," he cut Daniel off.

Daniel swallowed feeling Nicklaus’s change of mood which now affected his tune. It had been a long time since his boss had all these harsh mood swings that Daniel even forgot existed, "Okay," he fastly replied timidly as he hoped the sound of his pitch would not be a reason to anger his boss further.

Nicklaus kept quiet for a while as he tried to keep his emotions in check.

"How is your progress concerning Mr. Adams’s base?"

"The man is indeed smart," Daniel in sarcasm, and Nicklaus chuckled amused in line with reasoning, "He keeps on sending spies to Logan gang, and from my report, one is gone while the remaining two fleed in fear,"

"He surely is smart," Nicklaus declared in thought,

" No external mistakes. Be extremely careful," Nicklaus warned, "I have to go," Nicklaus announced before abruptly ending the call.

Staring ahead, he pondered on everything that had been going on with Arissa and her family. Life was not rosy but her life was deeply flawed and he began to wonder between them both who had the biggest scars.

As he said last night, he could just have any woman he wants and if the higher-ups are against it, he can just let her off the hook.

If she goes deeper into the crime and death occurs, he would be free from her but morning and night, the thought of her dying scared him to the point of it now becoming his biggest fear and that’s why he’s doing everything he could to pull her out of all of these.

She can stay angry with him for as long as she could. She can decide to arrange the divorce herself but he only wants her to be safe.

She would have to promise him that before he let her go unless she was going nowhere. He can’t afford to lose her, he wasn’t sure he would be able to survive it.

From her fury to her smile, her stern mask to her face filled with emotions, her glare to her soft eyes, they were all something that he wanted to now see each morning he woke up.

Formally, he had no reason to see the next day. He never even cared but each time he remembered a bright smile would be waiting for him if he survives his demons for the previous night, he always strived to wake up and see the next day.

He don’t know what this was called, he can’t even explain it but he was as sure as his next breath that she was his life. He felt it down to his bone marrow, she was the only reason he joyfully takes in his next breath.

He had no idea what this feeling was called and he don’t care to know about it. All that mattered to him was Arissa.

He knows with the hatred she has for him, he can’t keep her happy but one thing was sure. He would never let her walk alone, he would always and forever be there for her even if he has to do it in the shadows.
