Chapter 106: He Was Losing Himself.
Arissa kept on stealing glances at Nicklaus while she arranged her rage and played with her fingers to ease her fury.
"What are you upset about?" Nicklaus asked when the number of glances became threatening and he felt them graduate to glare.
At first, he was okay with it because he loved her attention on him but with the way she acted, it was as if she can’t wait to get back home so she won’t have to keep on sharing the same space with him.
"It’s nothing,"
"Arissa..." Nicklaus pressed starting at her upset side profile.
Arissa gritted her teeth. He was acting all innocent and since he wants to hear it from her, then fine!
"It was despicable of you to lie to Collins," she slammed him.
She never wanted to talk about it because she don’t want to start an argument but now that he asked, she had to open up and let him know how annoying he was back there.
Nicklaus sucked in a sharp breath, "We don’t have to dwell on that," he advised.
Arissa rolled her eyes at his advice, "That was extreme Nicklaus you almost made him ignore me. He was hurt," she pressed.
Nicklaus was disheartened by how deeply she cares about Collins. First, she gave him a happy hug and talked to him for an hour without considering his presence and now, she was scared that he would have ignored her.
He felt like a third wheel!
"But he’s okay now. Whereas, I only told him something that would happen sooner or later. The only difference is that it hasn’t happened yet," Nicklaus retorted casually like it wasn’t a big deal.
Arissa was speechless with what she just heard from Nicklaus. Did he just casually hinted they would have a baby? Really?
"Tsk," she clicked her tongue after finding it, "We won’t have a baby_"
"Why?" Nicklaus sharply cut her off before turning to her. Arissa was startled by how serious and sharp he sounded.
Why does he want a baby that much?
"Why don’t you want to have a baby?" he asked again and his voice lowered to calm and considerate.
"I just don’t want to have a baby,"
Nicklaus’s eyes squinted with hurt, "You don’t want to have a baby with me, or are there more reasons?" he kept his questions coming and Arissa could only roll her eyes in disbelief.
Why was he so adamant about talking about this? She just specified she just doesn’t want to have a baby so, why doesn’t the conversation about a baby die that way?
"Arissa," Nicklaus called her name in a reminder when she just spaced out and forgot about his question.
"You don’t want to have a baby with me?" he questioned again and Arissa turned her face to him. She felt her head tearing apart with this topic.
"I don’t want to have a baby with you. It’s as simple as that. Why don’t we end this topic now?" and now, she felt annoyed for the fact she dwelled on the topic when he advised her not to and now, he doesn’t want to back off from the topic.
Seeing the frown on Nicklaus’s face that demanded more explanation, it irked her so without care, she parted her lips, "I don’t want a BABY WITH YOU," she emphasized again, already irritated with the topic.
The moment Arissa said those words, Nicklaus stiffened in his seat and just stared at her with conflicted emotions.
"Nicklaus_"
She wanted to say something to him but paused at what she read from his eyes. She saw a hurt flash in those eyes but it was just for a second because it left as soon as it came and Arissa thought she imagined it.
"I’m sorry Nicklaus, but you have no right talking about this with me. You aren’t someone I plan to have a baby with," she explained calmly to coax him.
"Is it," he trailed off before meeting her eyes, "is it because of my bad traits you talked about earlier?"
Arissa was hit with muteness by the longing in his voice. Was this some kind of illusion? Why does he seem hellbent on this baby issue?
Can’t he see that this marriage is only for benefits? Whereas, she doesn’t want to ever bring a baby into this strangling world, and she won’t. Even heaven won’t change that.
From the way he sounded and how he was all patient talking about it, he was making her seem like she was the bad guy.
He was taking this too far and she was beginning to feel tight in her chest. She felt overwhelmed by the little conversation and it did her no good because she felt she would break down soon.
"I_"
"Nicklaus no," she shunned him softly before turning away from him, "I can’t bring a child into this marriage. It’s without love and would only traumatize the child," remembering a vital consideration if they ever have a child, she turned to him, "if we have a child, what would happen after we divorce per the contract?" she questioned him, looking into his dark eyes.
"We could," Nicklaus paused and ran his hand through his hair. Honestly, he had never thought about this.
He does want a baby, a mini version of her, and not only that, but he also wanted a solid reason to make her stay when the contract expires.
However, he paused because he can’t let her know his main reason. It might seem like some kind of manipulation to her and that might only hinder his chances for her to change her mind later on.
With each second that passes, he get more scared of losing her, and slowly, the strange feeling was clouding his sanity.
Arissa chuckled tiredly, "Let’s not talk about this again, please?" she whispered in a low broken voice, "we can’t add a child to our headache,"
Nicklaus’s heart was ripped open hearing how she referred to their marriage as a headache. His expression bleeds with unhidden anguish before he looked away.
Fifteen minutes later, they were in the elevator that led to their room floor and the tension in the car was 0% compared to the tension in the elevator.
They both were lost in their world while waiting for the elevator to get to their floor so they would attain some peace of mind for the betterment of everyone.
Finally getting out of the elevator, they were meant to just walk into their room and forget the next person exists until the next morning.
However, that wasn’t the case for Nicklaus because two steps away from Arissa and her door, he tried to grab her arm but she dodged his hold as if she had anticipated that as his next move.
"Arissa_"
Slam!
Nicklaus stepped back in horror as he stared at her door. He was losing himself. She had just slammed her door in his face and here he was standing and doing nothing. Instead, he still wants to coax her and give her time.
Did something happen to him lately? Was he alright?
