Chapter 101: It’s Unimaginable.
Nicklaus’s eyes met Arissa’s frame with admiration the moment she walked through the dining door. She never failed to effortlessly impress him ever since he took notice of her dress code.
Right now, she slayed gracefully in a white turtle neck sweater dress and a long black blazer over it. Seeing how covered her neck was, he frowned the moment he realized she was hiding his hickeys on purpose.
Trying to be unaffected, his eyes went to her long legs that were covered in black knee-length black boots. He chuckled inwardly. Even her style screams her classic personality. Arissa met his eyes and with a frown, she let it follow her down to the table.
Ignoring him she lowered her mini black purse and dark sunshades to the seat beside her, before turning back to Nicklaus and her expression turned confused when he was still focused on her.
Nicklaus gulped. He don’t know if he was beginning to see her in a different light or perhaps, she was perfectly glowing with each second.
With her brown hair tied up in a sleek bun, she looked glamorous with her additional gold hoop earrings and radiant light makeup.
His eyes went down to her blush-pink lips. He strongly doesn’t know how long he would be able to stay put without kissing her again.
Arissa turned uneasy with his stare. Clearing her throat to snap him out of whatever he was thinking of with such force on her, she turned to her meal.
For a moment, a long silence ensured between them and while Arissa ate, Nicklaus ate also, but with no attention on the meal as his whole attention was fixed on the figure who just joined him at the table.
She even made eating gracefully beautiful. Fuck, what’s wrong with him?
Swallowing the portion of food in his mouth, he parted his lips, "You look gorgeous," he complimented.
Arissa who had not expected him to say something to her was awestruck when he gave her such a compliment.
She blinked and paused on her meal before turning to him, "I...what about me looks gorgeous?" she asked, still taken aback by his compliment and like a double blow, when she met his eyes, they held unmistaken admiration in them.
Nicklaus turned startled by her question and only then, he realized what he had voiced out. Seating upright, an unknown feeling washed over him.
Cautiously swallowing her meal, she waited for his reply. To say she was stunned was an understatement. She was surprised beyond measure. When did they elevate to this level of compliments?
’This is wired. He better stop it,’ Arissa said out loud in her thoughts.
"Every_i mean, forget I ever said something like that," Nicklaus stuttered for the first time, and Arissa’s eyes widened.
She had never seen him this way. And with the nervous way he used to bury the conversation, Arissa’s stomach tightened with wired excitement.
She stared hard at him and when Nicklaus for the first time again avoided her gaze, a genuine smile washed over her lips.
What’s happening with him today? Was he sick or something, she asked herself.
It looked so nice seeing him as confused as this. Never had she expected that the all-organized man she always looks up to when it comes to concealing emotions is lost for words.
It’s unimaginable!
With a little nod, she went back to her meal and her mind processed all that just happened in just this short while.
His eyes were still on her and as she cut her meat, she prayed not to have an accident because, with his intense stare, her heart fluttered badly and it affected her whole composure.
Nicklaus smiled at her emotions from his glass as he sipped his water. A light spark with softness filled his gaze as he watched her.
Taking his glass off his lips, his low deep charming voice came out smooth as he said, "I’m having dinner tonight if you’d care to join_" he suddenly stopped because Arissa suddenly got choked on what she was eating.
Arissa’s eyes turned red at the sudden cough. Gripping her glass of water, she forcefully took some gulps down while Nicklaus just looked at her more confused without a clue of what to do.
"What?" she asked, after she had successfully subdued the food down. What he said shocked her and before she would process what he was saying, she choked on her meal the moment he added the part of her joining him.
"Are_" she trailed off, looking at him in surprise, "Are you asking me to go on a date with you?"
"I mean, yes," he paused, "If you would care to join me," Nicklaus tried to sound less dominant and give her a say on his proposal.
He badly pray his effort would be worth it because right now, he was on his toe with a dying hope. Her first reaction crushed his spirit. Well, you won’t blame him. This was his first time asking someone out on a date and his date’s first reaction matters a lot to him.
"We are not lovingly wedded but I guess we could do things couples do. Don’t you think?" he asked with panic on his inside when she said nothing as an answer but just stared at him.
Arissa chuckled. ’He does want to make things work,’ she reasoned in her thought with a smile.
"I’m sorry, I don’t think I can accept your invitation," she answered.
Nicklaus’s expression flattened, "Why?"
Arissa thinned her lips, "I have to be with Collins," she explained and that was all it took for the warm air in the dining to turn tense.
"What do you have to do with Collins tonight?" Nicklaus asked. His tune back to overbearing and demanding as his eyes immediately darkened with suspicion.
’Is she seeing Collins behind my back? Was Collins the reason she demanded an open marriage?’ Nicklaus thought went wild.
Seriously? Arissa thought when she felt the effect her words have on his emotions. Just how fast does he change his emotions?
’One moment, he was warm and loving and now, he’s reminding me of how much of an ass he can be with his dominant traits. The fuck!’
Taking a deep breath, she dropped her cutleries, "He would be leaving the country today and I’d love to see him off," she explained.
But that did not help because Nicklaus looked far from pleased with her explanation.
Trying to accommodate his emotion, she shut her eyes for a split second before opening them again, "If this would make you feel better, I guess you can join me," she offered.
She openly saw the mistrust in his eyes and she understand it. Considering the fact Collins kissed her before him the other day, she might not blame him if he openly accuses her of rejecting his date to hang out with Collins so, if he would feel better and if he was less busy, he can come with her.
Nicklaus stiffened with her casual offer. He suddenly felt uncomfortable with how low his trust in her was. It broke him.
