Chapter 240: Has Escaped or Has Gone Missing?
[ At YCPD Building... ]
Alice and Athena waited outside the interrogation room while Chief Clint Espinas took over the task of interrogating Enzo. For some unknown reason, Sgt. Gonzales and his companion disappeared without letting their colleagues know. Clint and others thought they just skipped the work and left the building.
Enzo was sitting next to his attorney while Clint was sitting opposite them.
"Mr. Williams, can you confirm about this photo? Were you the one with him?" Clint placed the pictures on the table, letting Enzo see them.
Enzo nodded. "Yes. I remember. These photos were taken in Goddess Elixir Cafe where I was working. He is one of our customers."
"But in the photo, you were seen handing an envelope filled with cash. This is proof that you paid him. You have to confess now, Mr. Williams. Did you hire this guy to kill Dominique Smith?" Clint asked him with a serious expression on his face. Dominique was his friend so he was so determined to catch the real mastermind behind Dominique’s accident.
"No!" Enzo firmly said. "Someone is framing me. I have nothing to do with Dominique’s accident. Besides, why would I negotiate and hire someone in a public place where someone could witness us? Someone who knew about my past conflict with Dominique would try to make it look like I was the culprit just to hide their crime!"
Chief Clint fell silent for a moment. Enzo’s words made sense. But the evidence was pointing to him. He needed a valid alibi to prove his innocence.
"So, you will keep insisting that you are being framed for this crime?"
"Yes. I didn’t do anything wrong. I never hired this guy. We will find evidence." Enzo replied with conviction.
They were still in the middle of the interrogation when Clint’s mobile phone rang. When he checked it, he saw Dominique’s caller ID.
"Why is he calling me at this hour?" he mumbled before excusing himself for a moment to answer Dominique’s call.
Clint pressed the answer button as soon as he stepped out of the interrogation room.
"Hey, Dom. What do you need?"
"Let Enzo go. Allow him to bail," Dominique instructed his police chief friend.
Clint was taken aback when he heard that. "Are you crazy? This guy is our suspect, responsible for your accident. You don’t have to be merciful to him and considerate just because he is your ex-wife’s brother. Don’t interrupt my investigation. I’m doing this for your own good."
Clint lectured his friend. He was against the idea of letting Enzo go. He had to stay in the prison.
"I said let him go. I believe him. He is being framed up." Dominique couldn’t help it. He didn’t want to break Athena’s heart so he asked favor to his police chief friend to free Enzo from being imprisoned in YCPD.
"Sigh. Dominique, are you sure about this? You might regret this." Clint still tried to convince Dominique to change his mind. However, his decision was final.
"I’m still alive. You don’t have to worry about me." Dominique reassured his friend.
Clint could only sigh in defeat. "Don’t tell me... are you not going to pursue this case again? Are you not pressing charges again?"
"No. I will still press charges. You must still catch the culprit. And I believe you got the wrong guy. It’s not Enzo."
"Why are you so confident?" Clint raised his eyebrow. "Enzo is still your enemy. He wants revenge."
"Because Enzo has lost his memories. He didn’t hate me that much as compared to five years ago. Until now, he has amnesia."
Clint was rendered speechless at Dominique’s revelation.
"Are you telling the truth?" Clint asked him in disbelief.
"Yes. Because I sent someone to monitor and take care of him for the past five years. Have you met Alice? His girlfriend? She is working for me." Dominique told Clint everything just to convince him that Enzo was innocent. Enzo had no intention to kill him since he lost his memories.
"Fine! I will comply with your request. I will release him today!" Clint finally gave in.
’Enzo is so lucky. Dominique is on his side.’ Clint shook his head helplessly before ending the call. He returned inside and continued the interrogation.
"After this, you can go home." Chief Clint informed Enzo and his attorney, surprising them both.
"We haven’t filed for a bailout yet." the attorney mumbled.
But Clint just motioned for them to leave immediately. "I’m releasing him so that he can find the evidence he needs to prove his innocence. If he fails, then I will capture him again and bring him back here!"
The attorney thanked Clint for his consideration.
"Mr. Williams, shall we go home? Let’s plan out and gather evidence."
Enzo just nodded in agreement. Then he shifted his gaze from the attorney to Clint. He noticed that his demeanor changed after the call.
As they stepped out of the interrogation room, Enzo approached Clint.
"Tell me. Who talked to you earlier? I believe that call has something to do with my release." Enzo glanced at Clint with so much intrigue and curiosity in his eyes.
Clint could only smile meaningfully and said, "You have a strong intuition, Mr. Williams. You were right. That call I answered a while ago is the reason why I’m releasing you today and letting you go home."
"Who is it?" Enzo asked him expectantly.
"Your former brother-in-law. Dominique asked me to release you."
Enzo was at a loss for words when Dominique’s name was mentioned. He didn’t expect that he would do that.
’Dominique is being too kind to me. Is this part of his pretentious act or he is truly sincere in helping me out?’ Enzo had conflicting thoughts about this.
Enzo and Clint remained standing in the hallway when one police officer ran toward them.
"Chief Espinas! Bad news! The driver of Mr. Smith’s hit-and-run case has gone missing. He is no longer in his cell."
"WHAT?! How could that happen? Have you checked the CCTV? Did he escape?" Clint raised his voice upon hearing the bad news.
The police officer chewed on his lower lip as he scratched his face. "Chief... our security cameras malfunctioned a while ago. I’m sorry but we can’t find any clues about the suspect’s current whereabouts."
