Chapter 139: Make Amends
Chapter 139: Make Amends
Enzo couldn’t believe what he had just heard from Dominique. Although he didn’t have a recollection of his father, he refused to believe that his father was capable of killing someone.
"Dominique, are you sure it was my father? Do you have proof? But why? I believe that my father would never do that."
"I decided to come clean, Enzo. That’s why I’m telling you this. You have a reason to hate me. And I am here to reveal the reason why I betrayed your sister and your family."
Enzo stayed quiet. He needed to hear everything.
"I didn’t plan for it to turn out this way," Dominique began, his voice heavy with regret. "When I first got involved with your family, it was solely for my revenge. Simple as that."
"To get into your family... I targeted Sabrina. I approached her... acting like a hero so that I could enter her life. My goal is to acquire your family’s wealth and make your father suffer... But then... things got complicated."
Enzo’s eyes narrowed, his grip on the urn tightening. "Complicated how?"
Dominique looked back at the ocean, his expression turning gloomy. "I fell in love with Sabrina," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "But I didn’t acknowledge it. I was in denial for so long because I felt guilty for my own family."
"I shouldn’t fall in love with the daughter of the man who destroyed my family. I thought I was still faking my feelings for her... I planned on letting her go after achieving my goal. I know she deserves to be happy with someone else... so I made her believe that I cheated on her so that she would sign the divorce paper."
"I wanted power, control... and I thought I could have it all. I thought I could protect her and still achieve my goals."
"I wanted Alberto to confess his crime... for killing my family. I plan to blackmail him using Sabrina, his precious daughter. But who would have thought that he would get sick? I was surprised when he was diagnosed with terminal illness."
"I gained your father’s trust. I was able to acquire your family’s business. It was a perfect plan. He was dying... so I didn’t need to put him behind bars. I thought everything was going smoothly according to my plan."
He paused, the weight of his confession hanging in the air. "But I was wrong. My revenge blinded me. I made deals with your Uncle, a greedy person who saw your family as a threat. I thought I could manage it, and keep everyone safe. But I overestimated my power..."
Enzo’s expression was a mixture of anger and confusion. "Damn you, Dominique Smith! Don’t be a hypocrite! You were saying you loved my sister but you were the one who caused her demise!"
He looked down, unable to meet Enzo’s eyes. "By the time I realized what I had done, it was too late. Sabrina committed suicide in front of me... My wife and my unborn child paid the price for my mistakes."
Enzo stood in silence, absorbing Dominique’s words. The anger in his eyes was tempered by sadness. "And now?" he asked quietly. "What do you expect from me? Forgive you?"
Dominique finally looked up, his eyes filled with remorse. "I don’t expect forgiveness, Enzo. I just want you to know the truth. And maybe... maybe one day, we can find a way to make things right. To honor Sabrina’s memory, and your family’s legacy."
"I thought... achieving my goal would make me happy. But after losing Sabrina... I realized that... she was the only source of my true happiness. It was my fault for making the wrong choice."
"I can’t bring her back to life... but I want to make amend with you because you are her beloved brother."
"If you will allow, I want you to work under my company. I still hold the biggest share of your father’s company. I can give it back to you once you are ready."
Dominique was aware that Enzo’s amnesia would be a hindrance for him to take over W Diamond Group. He couldn’t give it back just yet.
Enzo’s eyebrows wrinkled into a frown. "That’s a lot to ask," he said, his voice still laced with pain.
"I know," Dominique replied, his voice breaking. "But it’s all I can offer. The truth, and my promise to try and make amends."
Enzo turned back to the ocean as he remained silent. He was having conflicting thoughts right now. If he were to accept Dominique’s offer, it would seem like he was doing him a favor by making Dominique less guilty.
’Is this what Sabrina wants? I can’t decide on my own. Besides, I know that between Sabrina and I, she was the one who suffered the most.’ Enzo thought to himself.
Furthermore, he was still doubtful whether Dominique was telling the truth or not. He couldn’t trust him.
"Let me think about it first." Enzo finally broke his silence.
"But Dominique, I am more curious about your story. Tell me! How did your family die? I still can’t believe you. How sure are you that it was my father who did it? I believe that my sister and I were both raised well by our father. There is no way an evil person or a murderer could raise his children to be a good person, otherwise, my sister and I will turn out to be like him–"
Enzo paused for a moment as a troubling thought crossed his mind. ’Wait... I tried to kill Dominique too. Does that mean I inherited my father’s evilness? Is my father truly capable of hurting innocent people?’ Enzo began to doubt himself as well.
"I wanna know the reason why he targeted your family..." Enzo’s heart became uneasy. He didn’t know how he would react if his father was truly the person who destroyed Dominique’s family.
Meanwhile, Dominique took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts as he recalled the past.
"Alright. I’ll tell you my tragic past..." Dominique was now willing to share his ugly past with Enzo.
