Chapter 86: Denoir Family (3)
It was just the two of us that were sitting in this living room.
There wasn’t a single other person that was here.
All of the servants had been sent away by Viscount Denoir as soon as we came in, making it clear that he didn’t want anyone to hear what we were going to talk about.
But even after sending them away, it didn’t seem like he was planning to say anything.
The two of us just sat there in silence, but it was awkward as he was glaring at me the entire time.
It was clear that he didn’t want me here, but it also seemed like he had no choice but to tolerate me.
I really couldn’t tell what he was thinking with the way that he acted.
In the end, he broke the silence by saying, "An engagement really seems like the best option right now."
I had to admit that I was surprised by these words since it seemed to completely contradict the way that he had been acting previously. It really didn’t seem like everything was building up to this with the way that he had been acting.
But in the end, Viscount Denoir said this with a straight look on his face.
After a momentary pause, I slowly asked, "But is this really the best choice?"
Viscount Denoir narrowed his eyes to look at me when I said this. It was clear what he was trying to say with the way that he looked at me with these narrowed eyes.
"Do you think that my daughter isn’t good enough?"
In the end, I didn’t have to explain since I could also see that he knew what I actually meant when I said this.
It wasn’t a matter of whether his daughter was good enough or not.
It was a matter of our identities.
The Redmont Family and the Denoir Family were both famous as neutral families.
To be neutral families, we had to have a certain amount of power that others would be willing to leave us alone.
So if there was an engagement between the only son of the Redmont Family and the only daughter of the Denoir Family, there was no doubt that other nobles would become vigilant.
There might even be some people that would want to take action because of this.
After glaring at me for a bit longer, Viscount Denoir finally said, "No one said that you would be engaged right away. In fact, it will depend on how much effort you put in that will decide when you can become engaged."
"Effort?" I couldn’t help asking in a confused voice.
After all, I knew that he wasn’t talking about his daughter.
In fact, if I were to put a bit more effort there...well, he would end up as a grandfather before anything else happened. That was just how crazy his daughter was, but it wasn’t as if I would say that to Viscount Denoir’s face.
Instead, I waited for him to explain what he meant by this.
"You’ll start working for my department and depending on how high you rise, that is when you’ll get engaged."
I couldn’t help slightly knitting my brows when I heard this.
It wasn’t that I was against what he proposed since I knew where he worked.
It was known as the Land Survey Department, but that was only on the surface.
What it actually was was an information gathering department for the crown.
Essentially, they were royal spies.
"Didn’t this come at just the right time?" That was what I had been thinking.
After all, I had already been thinking about building up an information network like this since it was needed for everything that we had been doing. If I could get some resources and talents from the kingdom’s information network, then it would make things much easier.
It would save me quite a bit of time and effort to piggyback off of them like this.
"You’ll be entering from the bottom, but I’ll at least let you lead a team of your own." Viscount Denoir suddenly said as if he felt like he should say something after seeing the look that was on my face.
Though in reality, I hadn’t been about to reject him.
I had been thinking of the possibilities from going along with him on this matter.
There was no doubt that taking Debora Denoir as a wife would be the perfect cover in most situations. At the same time, it would also give me a legitimate cover to do many things related to the Land Surveying Department.
The only real problem was how obsessed she was.
I had been playing with the twin maids so far, but it wasn’t as if I wasn’t going to play around with other women as well. Since I was a noble young master, it was my right to do things like this.
Only if Debora became my wife...with how obsessed she was...
I would have to cross that bridge when the time came. If it really didn’t work, then I could think of some kind of solution by using magic to change her perspective.
In short, I was someone that would do what was necessary to make sure that I would be able to enjoy my new life.
Was I evil for doing that?
No, I was just selfish in making sure that I would enjoy my second life.
After another long silence, I said with a nod, "Alright, I’ll accept."
Viscount Denoir gave a nod too without any expressions on his face.
It was clear by the complicated look that was in his eyes that he didn’t actually know if he should be happy or angry that I accepted this offer. After all, it was clear that he was thinking about his daughter and how he didn’t want to let her go.
"Are you all done in here? We’ve brought some snacks?"
With this familiar voice, Viscountess Denoir and Debora walked in.
When Debora sat down beside me, Viscount Denoir glared at me once more.
But at least it seemed like he was warming up to me that he didn’t actually say anything to her.
