Chapter Ninety-Nine – Overthinking
Should he be worried too? Sorren glanced at his older brother who stood at the entrance. Laurel hadn’t returned.
"She said she was going for a short walk." Sorren repeated.
Stefan turned to him, then looked out again. "She doesn’t know this place. I don’t get why she keeps going out."
They didn’t have a strong enough bond for him to sense her emotions. Yet part of him was restless, which meant something happened to her? But he couldn’t be sure.
"That’s right, she said she would return with breakfast." Sorren remembered. "Maybe ask the kitchen—"
Stefan sped out immediately. Wasn’t the kitchen east to the courtyard he stayed at? He curved right and stopped at the huge yard where smoke rose to the skies.
Should he knock first? Or just ask them if they had seen a werewolfess? How will they know she’s the one?
"Excuse me?"
A young cook faced him questioningly.
"Have you seen a were—"
"Ara! You must be Alpha Stefan?" the cook yelped.
Stefan frowned. Ara? Wasn’t that the exclamation Zara made? Was it a tribal word? That lady traumatized him so the cook sort of repelled him. "Nothing. Don’t worry—"
"Ah! You are really as handsome as they say!" The cook ignored him, staring at him with glossed eyes. "Come in."
Like hell he would. Stefan walked away, heading to the flower shop he once saw Laurel at.
There was no trail of Laurel’s scent in the kitchen so she might not have dropped there. Even if she had, she wasn’t there anymore.
Standing in front of the shop, he caught her scent, she had stood there for a while. He followed the scent towards an open cart.
It had sacks stacked on top of it. But that wasn’t where the scent stopped. Stefan pulled the cart out of the alley it blocked and strolled in.
There was a man laid on the ground. "Are you okay?!" Stefan rushed towards him, raising him to his knees. But the man was injured. Was he dead?
Stefan looked around and found powder on the ground. It seemed like a smelling drug but it had lost its effects.
However, what worried Stefan the most was that his mate scent was in here strongly and now there was an almost dead man here. Where was she?
Possible scenarios flashed across his eyes and he grew distressed. He dropped the man on the ground when he saw the symbol in his hand.
A snake wrapped around a sword. That was a dangerous Lycan Cult. It’s target weren’t werewolves though, but any one they are paid to catch or kill.
Could someone have sent this man after Laurel? If he was here injured, then did he fail? Where else did Laurel go? Usually, she should hurry back to them.
Or did someone else take Laurel after this man came for her? Stefan walked out of the alley. Cult members don’t usually work in groups.
They were assassins after all. If they work alone, they enjoy all the benefits that comes with the job.
But in this case, a cult member may have been lurking to steal the job if it came from an important customer. They will then kill their fellow member and take the prize.
"Don’t you think you’re overthinking too much?"
Those words snapped Stefan from the rabbit hole of possibilities he had been diving into. "You think, Kai?"
He could feel his wolf wasn’t restless, which was odd as he had been few minutes ago. He had no bond with Laurel but it seemed he could still sense some things.
"She’s safe, for now. The only important customer will be the King. He has exclusive assassins of his own. Like Nero." Kai told Stefan an information already knew.
Stefan had researched close affiliates with the former King and Prince Asher before his pack was registered.
Nero and Nether, were prime assassins that the former King recruited, Nether, to take care of the young Prince and Nero, to do underground work for the former King.
Which meant the siblings didn’t have access to these cults anymore but they could still go on missions if sent by the Prince or King.
"Which will make sense why they hurt the other cult member." Stefan’s overthinking thoughts came full circle.
"Are you an idiot? What I mean is.... why will the King send cult members to do anything if he already have exclusive assassins?" Kai tsked. "Laurel is safe. Even if the King is with her, he won’t hurt her. It might be related to their last conversation."
Probably. Stefan sighed. But if not, Asher would have to forgive his next actions. Why will a newly elected King like him even try getting distracted with kidnaps?
And after the rogue attack? Stefan wouldn’t have imagined Asher was that reckless.
Was it also connected to the werewolfess whose scent can’t be caught? Delta Zara had been interested as well.
"And there you go again! Overthinking!" Kai snapped.
The Alpha shook his head, a low growl leaving his lips. He’d head back to the courtyard to wait. Laurel will return.
"You know, for a mate you hate, you are definitely getting too worked up at the thought that she’s in danger."
Stefan froze, then forcefully exhaled to calm himself. Even his own reactions surprised him. The mate bond was a curse he was slowly accepting, unwillingly.
Kai snickered. "Maybe when Laurel comes back, you give her a hug?"
Stefan closed his eyes. "Maybe."
His wolf was stunned by his response. "Really do it."
Stefan ignored him, his mind went to the last memory of his mate. In her wolf form. "Elma, right? Her fur is... strange. It’s not a natural phenomenon. A blue hue."
His wolf didn’t say nor feel anything. Stefan would sense it if he felt differently. Maybe he was accepting because it was his mate. "Do you think it’s malnutrition?"
Stefan felt Kia grow irritated and a little guilty.
"That will be your fault for keeping her in prison, wouldn’t it!" he growled immediately.
It was entertaining getting him riled up, after all he usually did the same to him. Stefan nodded. "Maybe I’m partly at fault. Or her wolf was just as strange as she was."
If Kai could himself rip out of Stefan’s body and consciousness then, he would. But he couldn’t take over Stefan’s consciousness as Stefan barely shifted.
"You are a villain." the wolf muttered in defeat.
