Chapter 85: Meeting the King

Chapter Eighty-Five – Meeting The King

"Excuse me, sirs, ladies." It was Nero. "King Asher would like to have a word with the two ladies, if you don’t mind."

Stefan raised a brow. A word with his mate? Then it clicked. Laurel was werewolf. Could Asher have realized?

The place was crowded to catch a scent but Asher was a strong Lycan and he might have focused on his mate out of curiosity.

Sorren made a small sigh, rubbing his head. He had warned Laurel about this but she still let it happen. He noticed her stand up, almost excitedly.

"If you’d please excuse me." Laurel said to them, pulling the girl with her. "We’d both be back soon."

Stefan held her hand. "And where do you think you’re going? Do you have any idea why he called you?"

Laurel tried to pull her hand back but he held it tightly. She cursed internally. He shouldn’t dare ruin her plans.

Nero watched them, wondering what the relationship between Alpha Stefan and the lady was. Could it be his fiancée? Then it made sense why he’s being possessive.

"Alpha Stefan, I think the King just wants to talk to the lady about the girl she’s with. That’s all." Nero added.

Stefan looked at the girl shivering under Nero’s presence. Was it really just about the girl? He wanted to stay close to Laurel since she was werewolf but plans kept failing.

Laurel pulled her hand successfully from his. "Don’t worry. This princess knows what she’s doing." She forced a smile before walking away with Nero.

As she left, Stefan turned to Sorren for some answers but his younger brother just munched on snacks from the tray.

"You should try some really." Sorren suggested when he noticed his brother watching him.

Stefan sighed tiredly, holding his head in his hands. What was Laurel doing? And why was she protecting that girl who had a connection to Asher?

Did Laurel think Asher was like he or Sorren? Asher was a Lycan Alpha King. And that’s like a rank of it’s own.

Nero walked behind Laurel, studying her. He noticed she stuck close to the girl, who was shivering. Did she know why the girl shivered so was trying to comfort her?

The acts of Asher would be considered wrong if others knew about it, that’s why he did it in secret.

Many Lycans now did business with werewolves. It didn’t mean they had forgotten the dark ages but they placed it behind them. Asher wasn’t such a Lycan.

They got outside the ballroom, there was a detached room in the yard. Laurel noticed it was richly decorated so it’s probably where the new King waited.

"Do you know this girl?" she asked Nero.

He hesitated. He should say he did because he was looking for her. But then, they’d be a question of how and where which he didn’t want to answer.

"The King asked me to look for her." He replied.

"Hmmm. You must have seen her before to recognize her. Or did you follow her scent?" Laurel raised a brow.

Nero stopped moving and Laurel looked away from him, heading to the room. He exhaled. Was the lady a witch?

She knew the girl’s scent was inactive. If she was a witch then it’s dangerous to leave her alone with the new King. What if this was the planned assassination against the King?

The door opened and Laurel pushed the girl in first, taking the charm for herself. Surely the King already knew the girl’s scent so it’d raise questions if it’s not there.

She found the new King laid on his sides with one hand propping his head. His eyes were on them as they walked into the room.

He laid on a metallic golden couch with designs of dragons on it’s cloth. She made a small bow.

He sat up and sighed. "Is she the one?" he asked Nero.

Nero’s eyes were on the werewolfess, he was stunned. On entering the room, he immediately caught her scent.

What witchcraft was that? "Um... uh, yes. She’s the one. I suppose Alpha Stefan’s fiancée."

His what now? Laurel snapped her head to Nero. "You just open your mouth and sprout rubbish! What is that?!"

The authority she used to scold him, even in front of his King, made Nero conscious. She could really be a powerful witch. "Sorry for the wrong assumption—"

He cut his apology short when he heard Asher laughing.

Laurel frowned at the new King. Even if her insides were scared to be in his presence, she wanted to show a bold resolve so he’d listen to her.

It was her last minute plan but it was better than no plan.

"You, you are a very interesting lady." Asher left where he sat, walking closer to her.

Laurel tucked the charm deeper in her clothes and kept her hands by her back. "I take it’s a compliment, your highness. Thank you. You had called for me."

Asher stopped in front of the girl who was shaking, heads down. "Do you know her? Where did you find her?"

"Around the ballroom, looking scared. I deciphered she was a lost werewolfess and plan to help her get home. I have no idea how she got here."

Asher frowned. So the lady helped out of the goodness of heart? It would be hard to convince her to let go of girl. And being from Stefan’s pack, was she werewolf too?

"You are a werewolf." It was a question but he made it sound like a statement. He couldn’t catch her scent for some reason but he didn’t want to bother on that.

Nero wondered how he could come up with that speculation? Was it because he was now a King?

But Laurel already anticipated the question, even if it didn’t sound like one. "Yes, currently the conquered Princess of former Black Claws Pack."

Former Black Claws Pack? Asher clicked his tongue. "Don’t tell me that you’re that Alpha King’s daughter? Why would Stefan keep you alive?"

He didn’t think Stefan would be that soft if he was ruthless enough to conquer a whole Kingdom.

"Well, I had nothing to do with my father. It’s a long story, your highness. Can I ask why you brought me here—"

"I want this girl." Asher interrupted, holding the girl’s arm.

Laurel smiled, facing him. "Having such an attractive lady by your side as a mistress, it could flip off your fated mate, your highness. Just a word of wisdom."

Asher hesitated. Anyone would think he wanted the girl for romantic purposes but he needed to finish his research on her before the drug in her blood completely vanished.

"I want her as a maid. How much can I buy her from you?"

The smile Laurel had been adorning her face with, fell off. "King Asher, haven’t you heard? People aren’t for sale."
